00:00 DAP's decision to field a Chinese candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by election is a
00:09 high-risk gamble.
00:11 This is what political analyst Awang Azman Paui said after DAP retained Ngakaw Ming's
00:17 press secretary, Pang Sok Thao, for the polls on May 11.
00:21 Awang said the decision to field Pang could be aimed at maintaining DAP's core support,
00:27 the non-Malay voters who backed the late Lee Kee Heong during the state polls last August.
00:33 Even so, he said, it is still considered a very risky move, considering 46 per cent of
00:39 the voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu are Malays, followed by 30 per cent of Chinese voters
00:44 and Indians at 18 per cent.
00:47 Awang said Perikatan Nasional would provide strong competition in the race if it fielded
00:52 a Malay candidate who was popular among the locals.
00:56 Meanwhile, political analyst Zaharul Abdullah said DAP would continue to be rejected by
01:02 Malay voters at the polls, a trend observed since the 15th general election.
01:08 However, Zaharul said PN could not depend solely on Malay votes to win the seat, as
01:14 it has been in DAP's hands since 2013.
