The internet along with a desire to have a new form of entertainment have helped the baseball card industry despite a game in 2020 not having been played as of yet. Some do it for a hobby, others for a chance to make money, but whatever the case the card industry is booming.

00:00 I've personally watched my kids watch other kids unbox toys on camera, but Topps Baseball
00:10 Cards claims to be the original unboxing company.
00:14 For more on that, I'm joined by our Emma Bachelary.
00:16 Now Emma, what is it about the baseball card industry right now that is allowing it to
00:21 thrive?
00:22 Yeah, I mean, you know, with a lot of people stuck at home looking for entertainment, especially
00:27 looking for anything that has to do with sports at all, in a sense, watching people open baseball
00:32 cards is kind of the closest you can get to that in a lot of ways.
00:36 You still have, you know, the element of surprise you get with sports in that you have no idea
00:41 what's going to get pulled out.
00:42 You have, you know, all of the players that you know and love.
00:45 You get a chance to see them in a different form.
00:48 And so because of that, a lot of people who run channels who are, you know, breaking open
00:53 boxes every day are seeing really big increases in viewership over the last couple of weeks.
00:59 Is this just a collector's item enjoyability thing or are people also looking to profit
01:04 off baseball cards still?
01:05 Yeah, there's definitely a mix of both.
01:07 I think, you know, for a lot of people it is just a hobby.
01:10 This is a time when a lot of people are just looking for, you know, distractions and something
01:14 fun, especially something like this that maybe, you know, reminds you of your childhood, something
01:18 you've enjoyed for a long time.
01:20 But there also is the fact that baseball cards can be a pretty serious alternative investment.
01:25 And this is something that a lot of people also look to as a way to, you know, spend
01:30 money in a way that it's not going to lose its value, hopefully.
01:33 Well, as they say during a regular baseball season, the back of the baseball card doesn't
01:38 tend to lie.
01:39 Emma, appreciate your time as always.
01:41 Yeah, thank you.
