00:00ESPN's Jeff Passon is reporting that New York Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard
00:06underwent successful Tommy John surgery and he is expected to return at some point in
00:11the 2021 season if all goes well with his recovery.
00:16The Mets announced on Tuesday that Syndergaard would be having season-ending surgery to repair
00:20the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
00:24Expectations were pretty high for Syndergaard heading into the 2020 season.
00:28The former all-star pitcher is coming off of the worst season of his career, a year
00:32in which he had a career-high 4.28 ERA.
00:37No pitcher ever wants to have Tommy John surgery, but for Syndergaard the timing is not ideal
00:41because he's set to be a free agent after the 2021 season.
00:45At the same time, if his recovery goes well, Syndergaard will try to show the Mets and
00:50other MLB teams that he deserves a big payday.
00:54With Syndergaard out for the entire 2020 season, the potential outlook of the Mets
00:59starting pitching staff will be Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Rick Porcello, Steven Matts,
01:05and Michael Wacca.
