00:00 I just want to know, of course, about your time at Carolina and just your journey through
00:07 Carolina to the NBA and to where you are now.
00:12 And I guess you can tie in, of course, Coach D. Smith and what you think about this Micah
00:19 Jordan documentary and yeah, so, that was like six questions in one.
00:24 She's your favorite.
00:26 But yeah, just some emphasis on your basketball career, more so at Carolina and what that
00:32 experience like was for you and winning a championship in '93.
00:37 Well, thank you.
00:39 I can tie all that in together because, you know, one of the recruiting pitches that Coach
00:47 Smith always tried to, you know, throw out there and push forward, the former players
00:55 recruited.
00:56 You know, of course, playing for D.D. Smith for the Hall of Famer, you didn't really know
01:01 the magnitude of that until you spent time with him.
01:07 But you know, my freshman year at Carolina Summer School, you know, Michael James Worthy,
01:14 Brad Doherty, Sam Perkins, J.R. Reid, Kenny Smith, all those guys came back and played
01:22 with you, Scott Wim.
01:23 They were all pros, playing it, you know, have reached the ultimate goal of playing
01:28 in the NBA and having a chance to play against Michael Jordan.
01:35 It was great.
01:36 And he was just as competitive then as you see on that documentary.
01:42 I tell everybody in the story who asked me that question in the last couple of weeks.
01:47 My freshman year, my roommate bought a pair of those Jordans that came out, and he didn't
01:53 play but probably seven minutes.
01:55 He was playing behind King Rice.
01:57 You know how it is, David.
01:58 Yeah, right.
01:59 You get in front of one of them good upperclassmen, you're going to see the floor, it's your freshman
02:03 year.
02:04 But he didn't play much.
02:05 And Michael was like, look, you don't play enough minutes to wear my shoes.
02:09 He made him take them off.
02:12 He wasn't going to allow him to play in the pick-up games until he changed his shoes.
02:17 And it was, we couldn't believe it.
02:20 And then we had this rule if the college guys beat the pros in pick-up, the pros would pay
02:28 for dinner.
02:29 We beat Mike the first game, he did not pay for dinner.
02:32 He was so competitive.
02:36 So next time I see Mike, I'm going to let him know he owes me dinner.
02:43 But my experience, you know, playing at Carolina, it was about growing these young men.
02:51 You know, Coach Smith did a great job of making sure that the team was diverse.
02:58 You know, everybody wasn't from North Carolina.
03:00 I was from Virginia.
03:01 I think we had two guys from just about every state.
03:06 We had a Texas kid on the team.
03:08 We had a kid from Germany on the team at one point.
03:12 Scott Williams was from California.
03:15 You know, all over the country, New York.
03:17 You know, he tried, he recruited everywhere.
03:19 He just didn't recruit in the state of North Carolina.
03:22 But it was a great opportunity.
03:25 Of course, you know, going to the Final Fours, you know, playing the rivalry game against
03:31 Duke, playing in the ACC.
03:32 It brought the best out of you.
03:36 And you know, along with the friendship that I've had, you know, through the years, meeting
03:40 the guys, even the younger guys like David, you know, Evan Scott, you know, the guys,
03:46 the current guys that play now, when you go back, you just try to share some knowledge
03:51 and try to, you know, welcome them to the brotherhood.
03:58 And we just try and make sure that every guy that comes through has been touched by an
04:03 older player.
04:05 Like when I came through, you know, I was touched by Michael and, you know, Sam Perkins
04:11 and Kenny Smith and guys like that.
04:13 So we just try to make sure that, you know, you're constantly recruiting for the program.
04:23 And just try to keep that legacy going so that years to come that the program will be
04:30 what has always been and what Coach Smith built the foundation for.
