Transcript
00:00Following the heavy rains that happened in the city over the last few days, we've been
00:25able to look at the damage.
00:26Our disaster teams have been on call.
00:30The level of the rains has been very high, more than usual, and that's why we've seen
00:36a lot of damage in many places.
00:39The rivers have actually burst their banks, so Ngong River, Madare, if you look, all across
00:47the city.
00:48And so following that, at least today we had a multi-agency discussion.
00:53During that meeting, we made a number of resolutions that we're issuing out to the
00:57public.
00:58There are many people, in fact, where we're from just now, in Mukuru, Kwaruben, those
01:06who've encroached the path of the rivers.
01:10And I'm happy that there they're already moving themselves, because they create blockages.
01:15And that is why we found a bridge that was swept away, actually two bridges that connect
01:21Kwaruben and Lunga Lunga.
01:23The county is undertaking emergency provision of bridges across the sub-counties where that
01:30is needed.
01:31And we'll make sure by the time children are going to school, they can be able to have
01:35access because you have children who cross from both sides.
01:39As we look at many of the areas, including where we are, we can see that there's actually
01:43a lot of encroachment and obstruction of the normal path of the rivers.
01:52There's a fence we go and see across there, one of the estates, that is right on the river.
01:57And that should not be the case.
01:59We are also telling the Pole of Nairobi that our disaster teams are on standby 24 hours,
02:04seven days a week.
02:06They can call our toll-free number 1508 at any time.
02:12We have ambulances on standby across the city, and that number goes straight to our
02:16emergency operations center that can be able to dispatch any assistance that is needed.
02:23Also we are appealing to Nairobians to listen to authorities, the sub-county admins, the
02:27ward admins, the DCCs and the assistant county commissioners who are asking them to move
02:33to higher ground in those places that are affected.
02:35They should be able to heed those calls, because it is really for their safety, it is for our
02:41safety for us to be able to do that.
02:42So just call 1508, let us know if any of what we've said needs to be done is not being done
02:48by somebody else.
02:49We must be vigilant, also as the people of Nairobi.
