Although referred to as a “Big One,” the Philippines may experience "many" large or powerful earthquakes rather than just one, an expert from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Monday, April 22.

00:00The Big One, let's clarify first, is not a scientific term.
00:04The Big One, here in our context in the Philippines, is used by our colleagues in the media
00:11to describe a strong earthquake that may or may not happen in Metro Manila.
00:19So when we say Big One, the equivalent of this is the earthquake in Metro Manila.
00:24But in reality, the Big One may happen in every region, in every province,
00:34except for one province, they have their own Big One.
00:39Because here in these places, in these provinces, in these regions,
00:43except for that one province, they have earthquake sources.
00:48And these earthquake sources may generate different earthquake scenarios.
00:54And the strongest earthquake scenario is the one that may be the Big One in their place.
01:00So it's possible that there's a Big One in Metro Manila,
01:04that's the movement of the West Valley Fault, or the movement of the Manila Trench in the West Philippine Sea.
01:10It's possible that there's a Big One in Davao City, because there's the so-called Davao Fault System.
01:16It's also possible that there's a Big One in the Ilocos region, like what happened on July 27, 2022.
01:24It's a magnitude 7 earthquake, but there are still faults there that aren't moving.
01:29There's what's called the West Ilocos Fault System.
01:33We have fellow Filipinos who are listening to BASEI Summer, Eastern Summer.
01:38Actually, their Big One there is not just Big One, but Bigger One.
01:43Because it's possible that there's a magnitude 8 earthquake due to the movement of the Philippine Trench.
01:49So, different scenarios in different regions mean that they have their own Big One.
01:56And it's not just one One, there are many Ones, that's why we call them Big Ones.
