00:00 A. Samad Ismail was a quintessential journalist and hardworking newspaper editor who could
00:07 play the villain and the angel at will.
00:10 But he was more than just a newsman to those who worked closely with him at the New Straits
00:14 Times.
00:16 In his book, A. Samad Ismail, Journalism and Politics, former NST Group editor Li Siu-Yi
00:22 recounted how Samad had appointed himself as the honorary uncle of his entire staff.
00:28 Former NST columnist Adiba Amin also said in the same book that many people had benefited
00:33 from Samad's kindness, which earned him their undying loyalty.
00:37 Samad, who died in 2008, was a force to be reckoned with in the newsroom.
00:43 Known as Pa Samad, the news icon poured his heart and soul into mentoring young journalists,
00:49 instructing them in the ways of his mantra, "Explain, clarify, simplify."
00:54 He was also described as a fearless defender of journalism who was not afraid to take political
00:59 and even commercial risks.
01:02 He was detained three times under the Internal Security Act, twice by the British in colonial
01:07 Singapore and once in Malaysia.
01:09 However, this did nothing to shake his belief that a newspaper is meant to deliver news
01:15 and not to please highly placed people.
01:17 To mark his 100th birthday, a remembrance event will be held at Garak Budaya on April
01:22 21st to pay tribute to the man who inspired writers and politicians in Malaysia and Singapore.
