00:38 Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:45 I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesos Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49 We begin with the news.
00:50 This Sunday, the United Nations Security Council
00:52 held an emergency meeting to discuss Iran's counterattack
00:55 against Israeli military positions.
00:57 UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres
00:59 warned the international community against deeper
01:01 dissent into conflict.
01:02 Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan,
01:05 called on the Security Council to impose
01:07 all possible sanctions on Iran.
01:09 For his part, Iran's ambassador to the UN, Amir Zayed Irravani,
01:13 said his nation had no choice but to exercise
01:16 its right to self-defense, adding that the Security Council had
01:19 failed in its duty to maintain international peace
01:22 and security by not condemning the April 1
01:24 attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
01:27 Irravani specified that Iran does not want an escalation,
01:30 but will respond to any threat or aggression.
01:33 The Iranian Armed Forces' confirmed Operation True
01:40 Promise in response to the Israeli attacks
01:42 on the Iranian consulate in Syria has been completed,
01:45 and it has been extremely successful.
01:47 Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad
01:50 Bagheri reiterated statements made by Iranian President
01:53 Ibrahim Raisi about the operation being
01:55 in defense of sovereignty and national interests,
01:58 because with the attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria,
02:01 Israel had crossed all of Iran's red lines,
02:03 and that was unacceptable.
02:05 Also, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander-in-Chief
02:08 Hossein Salami said that the True Promise operation was
02:11 successful beyond all expectation.
02:13 From our side, this operation is over,
02:21 and we have no intention to continue.
02:23 But if the Zionist regime takes any action
02:25 against the Islamic Republic of Iran, either on our soil
02:28 or in places that belong to us in Syria or elsewhere,
02:32 our next operation will be much bigger.
02:34 The impact of which we have accurate and documented
02:40 information on the ground show that the operation was
02:43 extremely successful, beyond our expectation.
02:48 Let us review the content of Article 51 of the UN Charter
02:51 under which Iran launched its Operation True Promise
02:53 in response to multiple aggressions by Israel.
02:56 Article 51 stipulates there is nothing in the United Nations
02:59 Charter that shall impair the inherent right
03:02 to individual or collective self-defense in the event
03:04 of an armed attack against any state.
03:06 Tehran argued that as a result of the Israeli aggression
03:09 on April 1 on its consulate in Damascus,
03:11 the Syrian capital, seven Iranian citizens,
03:13 including several Revolutionary Guard senior officers,
03:16 were killed.
03:16 If we recall that there had been a previous incident in which
03:19 another prominent Iranian officer had been killed
03:22 in Lebanon in an Israeli operation.
03:24 Now let's go over Saturday's key events
03:31 as the armed forces of Iran launched
03:33 hundreds of drones and missiles against occupied territories
03:36 and Israeli positions.
03:37 Over 500 drones were launched in addition
03:39 of the forces in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon
03:42 launched attacks against Israeli territory.
03:44 The Iranian defense team detailed
03:46 that such action is in response to numerous crimes
03:49 by the Zionist regime, including the assassination
03:51 of Iranian military commanders and advisors.
03:54 The Iranian authorities declared to the Western media
03:56 that their attacks were directly exclusively
03:59 against military targets of the Tel Aviv regime.
04:01 Let us also review why the Israeli military base
04:09 Nevatim, against which Iran focused part of its response
04:12 operation, became a key target.
04:14 Nevatim is Israel's most important military facility.
04:17 It is positioned 100 kilometers from Iranian territory
04:20 and 15 kilometers from the city of Beersheba
04:23 in the Negev Desert.
04:24 This base houses the 103rd squadron,
04:26 as well as the 116th and 140th operational squadrons
04:30 of F-35 fighters responsible for the genocidal operation
04:34 in Gaza, and the 117th training squadron that provides
04:37 training to F-35 pilots.
04:40 It is also the headquarters of Squadron 122,
04:42 belonging to the Israeli Espionage Service,
04:44 and is the hangar of presidential aircraft
04:47 and headquarters of the important Zionist espionage
04:50 components.
04:50 Iranian citizens took to the streets of Iran
04:57 to celebrate the Revolutionary Guard's response
04:59 against the Israeli regime.
05:01 Citizens gathered this Saturday night
05:03 in different parts of Iran to show their support.
05:05 The largest mobilization took place in the capital, Tehran,
05:08 at the Palestinian Square, where demonstrators also
05:10 showed their support to the Palestinian cause
05:13 and rejected the Israeli occupation.
05:15 Mobilizations were held as well in front of the United Kingdom
05:17 embassy.
05:18 Also in Jordan, hundreds of citizens
05:28 gathered near the Israeli embassy in Amman
05:30 to protest the genocide in the Gaza Strip.
05:33 They demand that official measures
05:35 be taken to stop the launching of missiles,
05:37 and in addition to guaranteeing the entry of humanitarian aid
05:41 into the territory.
05:41 Meanwhile, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon
05:52 have reopened their airspace after seven hours of closure.
05:55 The Israeli occupier was the first one
05:57 to conclude the closure of its airspace
06:00 and the reestablishment of operations
06:02 at Ben Gurion Airport, considered the most important
06:04 airport in the country.
06:06 Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq also confirmed the reactivation
06:09 of airport operations.
06:11 These nations closed their airspace
06:12 because Iran notified well in advance
06:14 about the development of the true promise military
06:17 operation, expected that the frequency of their flights
06:20 will be lower than usual, and they will even
06:23 register some changes in their schedules.
06:24 The government of India has also expressed
06:31 concern of the escalation of hostilities
06:33 between Iran and Israel and has called
06:35 for an immediate reduction of tensions
06:36 and for a return to the path of diplomacy.
06:39 In a statement issued by India's foreign ministry,
06:41 the Indian government calls the parties involved
06:43 to exercise restraint and to distance themselves
06:46 from violence.
06:47 The foreign ministry says that New Delhi is closely
06:49 following the events and that its embassies
06:52 in the countries of the region are in close contact
06:55 with the Indian diaspora.
06:56 They note, however, that the current situation represents
06:58 a threat to peace and security in the region.
07:02 In this context, Russia and China,
07:03 along with other nations, have issued similar calls
07:06 to the international community.
07:07 The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas,
07:14 has considered the Iranian response
07:15 to the Zionist occupiers' attacks as fair and deserved.
07:18 The true promise operation carried out this Saturday
07:20 against military targets of the occupiers,
07:23 according to Hamas, a natural right
07:25 and a deserved response to the crime
07:26 against the Persian consular headquarters in Syria.
07:29 In his statement, the Palestinian group
07:31 called on the free peoples of the world
07:33 and the forces of resistance in the region
07:35 to continue their support for the Al-Aqsa flood operation.
08:01 Israeli armed forces carried out four massacres
08:04 in the Gaza Strip, leaving 43 Palestinians killed
08:06 and 62 wounded over the weekend.
08:08 The Palestinian health ministry reported
08:10 that the total death toll from the Israeli genocide
08:12 against Gaza rose to 33,729,
08:15 while more than 76,000 people have been wounded.
08:18 Health authorities also detailed that several victims
08:21 are still in the rubble and on the roads,
08:23 where civil defense teams and ambulances cannot reach them
08:26 due to the Israeli siege.
08:28 For this part, the Palestinian foreign ministry
08:30 denounced the crimes committed by armed Israeli settlers
08:33 against Palestinian citizens and called on the international
08:36 community to reject these actions
08:38 and to judge the guilty parties of these actions.
08:40 In Mexico, citizens rallied in solidarity
08:46 with the Palestinian people and condemned the Israeli genocide
08:48 in Gaza.
08:49 Demonstrators demanded that the Mexican government
08:51 break diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv
08:53 and pointed out the responsibility
08:55 of the United States for the Israeli aggressions
08:57 against Palestine by sending resources and weapons
09:00 to the Zionist regime.
09:02 The demonstration was led by a group of women
09:05 waving Palestinian flags amid slogans
09:07 expressing rejection of genocide
09:09 and demanding a ceasefire in Gaza.

10:15 the capital of Grenada, and signed new bilateral
10:18 agreements relating to the environment, education,
10:20 public health, agriculture, and fisheries, among others.
10:23 This visit also shows the strong will on both sides
10:31 to continue moving forward, to continue consolidating
10:34 and strengthening ties between both our governments
10:37 and peoples.
10:39 The Cuban President took the opportunity
10:41 to underscore the youth and commitment of Prime Minister
10:44 of Grenada.
10:46 We appreciate you as a young Caribbean leader
10:49 of Latin America and the Caribbean,
10:51 and we respect and admire what you are doing for your nation,
10:54 for your people, and also for the friendship and respect
10:57 that you have expressed towards Cuba.
11:00 This Saturday, the Democratic Party, We Are Peru,
11:02 denounced the attempt of homicide
11:04 against the regional governor of San Martín, Walter Grundell,
11:07 who is a militant of that political organization.
11:09 The organization clarified that the regional governor was not
11:12 hurt after the aggression.
11:13 However, members of his security team
11:15 were wounded and admitted at a local hospital.
11:17 The party demands an investigation
11:19 and that the authorities guarantee their protection
11:21 and security of the governor and his family.
11:23 In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro
11:30 commemorated the 22nd anniversary
11:32 of the triumph of the civic matriarchy union
11:34 that succeeded in rescuing President Hugo Chávez
11:36 on April 13, 2002.
11:39 President Maduro commemorated the day of dignity
11:41 22 years after the popular revolution of April,
11:43 where the people led a popular move for the return
11:46 to power of Hugo Chávez, which forever
11:48 changed the history and the political future
11:50 of the country.
11:51 Maduro led a rally in the city of Caracas,
11:53 where serving this day together with lieutenants and cadets,
11:57 who took part in rescuing Chávez,
11:59 and also with thousands of citizens
12:00 who came out to the streets to celebrate.
12:02 The rally featured performances of musical groups and speeches
12:05 by keynote speakers.
12:06 In the framework of the upcoming presidential elections
12:13 in the country, the National Electoral Council of Venezuela
12:15 met with international observers to sign an agreement
12:18 for the polls to be held on July 28.
12:21 From Caracas, our correspondent Adriana Cibori
12:23 provides us for details in the following report.
12:25 The electoral power of Venezuela and the international observers
12:33 of the Latin American Council of Electoral Experts
12:35 sealed agreements at the Observatory
12:37 of Regional Integration.
12:38 Observers are not the ones who come
12:43 to judge whether the election is right or wrong.
12:46 They come to collaborate with the electoral bodies
12:50 of all our nations in order to give their feedback
12:53 in each balloting so that our states can
12:55 make future breakthroughs.
12:57 Indeed, it has worked, in all, it has
13:00 been working in all countries.
13:03 Both organizations highlighted the fact
13:05 that Venezuela is one of the few countries in the world that
13:08 uses an electronic voting and dual validation system.
13:12 The attached document sets the observation terms.
13:16 According to the agreement, they will
13:17 be able to accompany the whole process, such as the training
13:20 of polling stations members, campaigns as well as the 16
13:23 audits.
13:24 That is paramount.
13:31 Affirming and consolidating democracy is crucial for us.
13:34 To achieve so, we think the electoral body
13:39 is the only feasible path to strengthen democracy.
13:42 Thus, we welcome the fact that in the Bolivarian Republic
13:49 of Venezuela, broad sectors of the opposition
13:53 have decided to run for these elections.
13:55 And in the end, as we say, it is the people,
13:59 the Venezuelan people, who define and vote
14:04 for their representatives.
14:06 Experts will present their first observation briefing
14:09 on the first day of the electoral closure.
14:11 The last one will be at the end of the voting,
14:13 just after outcomes will be known.
14:15 We hope observers will accompany us
14:22 throughout this trajectory from now to July 28.
14:24 Being distinguished for your activities,
14:30 we hope that you will be able to join us
14:32 in the next election.
14:33 Being distinguished for your activity,
14:37 you'll be able to present your final report
14:39 to the National Electoral Council with any suggestions
14:42 you may have today, after the election day
14:47 or this electoral celebration.
14:50 They assured that the joint commitment
14:52 is to consolidate democracy, peace,
14:54 and by and large, citizen participation.

15:21 Welcome back.
15:39 In Niger, hundreds of demonstrators
15:41 took to the streets to demand that the Junta government
15:43 immediately expel US troops from the territory.
15:45 Nigerians demand that the US brigades leave immediately,
15:48 as it happened with the French soldiers.
15:51 Demonstrators reiterated that the age of empires
15:53 and colonies had come to an end.
15:55 Niger had signed an agreement that allowed
15:57 the presence of 1,000 Pentagon troops.
16:00 The Junta government terminated the agreement,
16:02 opting for a military exchange with Russia.
16:04 In the United Kingdom, the Labour Party
16:12 is backing the government in its intention
16:14 to increase military spending in detriment
16:16 of other public services.
16:18 Labour Party leader Keir Starmer is facing negative comments
16:21 for having suggested increasing military spending
16:24 by up to 2.5% of the nation's gross domestic product.
16:28 His proposal is in tune with the Conservative Party's
16:30 stance to raise the defence budget
16:32 to the equivalent of 13.5 billion US dollars.
16:36 This coincides with the announcements made
16:38 by several European leaders that point
16:40 to the militarisation of the continent
16:42 and the possibility of a conventional war
16:44 in the making.
16:44 Russia's defence ministry reported the surrender
16:52 of at least nine Ukrainian soldiers in the Donbass region.
16:55 The Russian Ministry of Defence indicated
16:57 that the captured Ukrainian soldiers said
16:58 that their commanders never showed up
17:00 at their military posts and that the missions were ordered
17:03 remotely by radio communication.
17:05 Soldiers said that they were sent to that territory
17:08 to expose themselves, despite colossal losses.
17:11 In addition, they revealed that there
17:12 is poor battle planning, poor training of commanders,
17:15 huge losses of men and equipment,
17:17 as well as panic in the units.
17:19 In Russia, new faults were reported
17:38 in the residential areas of Orenburg City over the weekend.
17:42 The mayor of Orenburg, Sergei Salmin,
17:44 announced a massive evacuation in the area on Friday
17:47 after the Ural River water level increased.
17:49 The authorities classified the situation in the region
17:52 as a federal emergency of major importance.
17:55 The water level is expected to exceed 11 metres,
17:57 putting the city at risk of flooding,
18:00 and residents of all settlements along the river
18:02 have been asked to evacuate from the area.
18:08 As long as there is light, electricity, and water,
18:11 we will stay here.
18:12 Of course, we are ready to move with our relatives at any time.
18:15 They are ready to provide shelter.
18:18 Today we placed a lot of sacks in that half.
18:21 We started to build a dam from there.
18:23 We moved and came here.
18:25 Some people are working on one side.
18:27 Some are on the other.
18:29 They are still working there now.
18:31 Russia's Science Academy Geophysical Service
18:33 has reported activity in the crater of the Yebeko volcano
18:36 in the Kuril Archipelago.
18:38 Geophysical Service has confirmed the presence
18:40 of an ash plume higher than 2,000 metres above sea level
18:43 coming from the Yebeko crater.
18:45 According to sources, the smoke cloud extends 7 kilometres
18:48 to the south-east of the Kuril Archipelago.
18:50 The 1,156-metre-high volcano last erupted in 2012,
18:55 then it remained calm until 2016.
18:57 Since then, it has spewed ash every so often.
19:00 In 2018, the Yebeko volcano had a 6,000-metre-high smoke plume.
