00:00 CM Punk thinks AEW is an effing joke, some mass AEW releases, one of which is quite controversial,
00:07 and my review of WWE Raw.
00:09 I'm Luke Owen and this will be a very long WrestleTalk News.
00:14 Get a cup of tea ready.
00:21 All of this build for WrestleMania 40 has made people nostalgic for WrestleManias with
00:25 a multiple of 10 - which would include WrestleMania 30 - which saw The Shield get over his baby
00:30 faces, Undertaker lose his streak to Mr. Black, and Bryan Danielson win the WWE Championship
00:37 - which only happened because CM Punk walked out of the company a couple of months earlier
00:42 and then got fired on his wedding day.
00:44 Later that same year he did an Art of Wrestling podcast where he shot hard on his former employer
00:49 and scorched all sorts of earth.
00:52 And now, 10 years later, CM Punk has done a big, scorched earth interview where he shot
00:57 on his former employer that fired him.
00:59 Punk had been advertised for an interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour where they
01:03 promised that all bases would be covered in terms of questions, and boy were they.
01:08 Punk spoke about the Vince McMahon allegations confirmed Fightful Select's report about
01:12 talks of his Survivor Series return only coming together in the final days leading up to Survivor
01:16 Series and revealed that he nearly returned to WWE prior to joining AEW.
01:22 On the WWE return he credits Nick Khan as the reason he came back to WWE, and joked
01:28 that he had no non-compete with AEW and that upon learning that, Khan said, "I wish I
01:33 knew that."
01:34 Which might have suggested that he brought Punk in earlier.
01:36 He had talked about bringing him back at the Rumble, but Punk suggested Survivor Series.
01:40 But a large chunk of the two hour interview was dedicated to Punk saying what he was legally
01:45 allowed to say about his time in All Elite Wrestling, which included brawl out, brawl
01:50 in, his firing and more.
01:52 It's interesting to note that Punk said that he didn't sign any NDAs for things
01:56 he did wrong.
01:57 He clarified the Jack Perry incident at Collision, where Perry wanted to shoot an angle involving
02:02 real glass at the show which would write him off TV for a pre-approved holiday, and said
02:06 that Perry was casting people out who told him no about shooting the angle, and told
02:11 Perry that if he wanted to do that, do it on Wednesdays, i.e. Dynamite, because they
02:15 don't do things like that on Saturdays.
02:17 Punk said he clearly took something very business-minded very personally, which is fine because I've
02:22 done that before too, and it's very much who he's friends with.
02:26 An 'S' never got squashed, nobody's in charge, and it turned into what it turned
02:30 into.
02:31 You'll notice that 'who he's friends with' is a big part of Punk's interview.
02:36 What it turned into was Perry suplexing Hook onto a windshield of a taxi on the All In
02:40 pre-show, looking down the camera lens and saying, "It's real glass, cry me a river."
02:45 After the match, Punk said that Perry told him to do something about it and, according
02:48 to Punk, "I thought I was doing the responsible thing.
02:51 I didn't punch anybody.
02:52 I just choked someone out a little bit."
02:54 Aha, the old 'responsible choking someone out'.
02:58 He said there and then he quit AEW, saying he knew the match with Samoa Joe would be
03:04 his last in the company.
03:05 He says, "I turned to Tony Khan, I said, 'This place is a f***ing joke, man.
03:09 You're a clown.'
03:11 I quit."
03:12 He talked about the infamous Hangman Page 'workers' rights' promo, and said that
03:16 Adam Page went against everything that they'd agreed to say backstage.
03:20 He said, "Afterwards I spoke to him and I was like, 'Why did you do that?'
03:23 He thinks I got one of his friends who hadn't been fired, fired.
03:27 I went to Tony and the lawyer and I said, 'You need to fix that because if I do, you're
03:32 not going to like the way I fix it.'
03:34 And I thought I was being professional by not just murdering him on television.
03:38 I have never done anything to any of those guys.
03:41 If they're basing how their attitude is towards me based off some BS a friend told
03:45 them, then I can't help you."
03:47 Again it all comes back to that 'who you're friends with'.
03:50 And I think we can all guess who that friend is based on his answer to the question, "Will
03:54 you ever bury the hatchet with Colt Cabana?"
03:57 He answered, "Probably not."
03:58 He came up to me one time at a show, I was at the curtain watching the show, and he came
04:02 up to me and was like, "Can we talk so it's not weird between us?"
04:06 And I said, "I won't ever talk to you without a lawyer present."
04:10 He added, "He caused all this dumb s for no reason."
04:15 It all ties into his recounting of the All Out press conference which led to a backstage
04:20 fight with The Elite that got all of them suspended and their championship stripped.
04:24 It was, for the benefit of hindsight, the real beginning of the end for Punk in AEW.
04:29 Punk said that he lost his temper at that All Out press conference, and it was seeing
04:33 media there who are friendly with wrestlers that sent him over the edge.
04:37 He said, "Getting out there and seeing reporters that report s about you like it's fact without
04:41 ever checking with you, who are openly friends with other wrestlers, it's just f-ing high
04:46 school clicky drama BS."
04:48 He jokingly adds that it's a top 3 CM Punk promo.
04:50 Still not better than the Cynomath though.
04:53 But with all things Punk, there is a second side to this story.
04:56 As Sean Ross Sapp pointed out on Twitter replying to someone, Punk also talks to the Dirt Sheets
05:00 a lot, tweeting, "Where do you think all the info from Punk's side was coming from?"
05:05 After all that, and there is more, Punk said that he doesn't regret his time in AEW.
05:11 He put over working with Sting, and said that his feud with MJF is head and shoulders above
05:16 anything else he did in the company.
05:18 He told Helwani that he was looking to move on from this, and says that those in AEW also
05:24 want to move on.
05:25 But he did have one big dig at AEW's Tony Khan saying, "He's not a boss, he's
05:30 a nice guy."
05:31 He added that he thinks AEW is often too focused on putting on good matches and not drawing
05:37 money.
05:38 And if he'd known that philosophy going in, things might have been different.
05:40 I've not gone into all the nitty gritty of what Punk said, this was literally a potted
05:44 highlight, so I recommend you go and watch the whole two hour interview or go to WrestleTalk.com
05:50 for a detailed breakdown.
05:52 During the interview, several stars from AEW like Sammy Guevara tweeted in support of the
05:56 company.
05:57 And Fightful Select report that one talent told them that it wasn't really connected
06:00 to anything specifically the Punk said, and that it was more about supporting the company
06:04 than anything.
06:05 Fightful also add that some in AEW felt the real issue with the Jack Perry "Real Glass"
06:10 story was, ironically, that Punk talked to the press about it and made it a public story
06:16 when it didn't need to be.
06:17 According to Fightful Select, one supporter of Punk in AEW told them, "They hope this
06:22 is the last of it" and that "one day, fences are mended."
06:27 From the WWE side of things, one talent told Sean Ross Sapp they're glad this happened
06:31 this week as WrestleMania news will overshadow it and people can move on.
06:35 Another WWE exec told Fightful Select they didn't believe Punk really wanted to broach
06:40 the subject of AEW today, but knew it was likely going to come up.
06:44 But we're not done with news yet!
06:46 As AEW themselves were perhaps trying to bury their bad news under the CM Punk report as
06:51 they released 10 talents from the company.
06:55 Since their inception in 2019, AEW have let contracts run out and not re-sign them if
06:59 they don't want to keep hold of them.
07:01 But this is the first time AEW have released talent from their contracts.
07:06 Mike Johnson of PWInsider reports, "AEW is currently evaluating their talent roster
07:12 and making cuts to benefit both the company and the talents."
07:15 The talent released are mostly involved with Ring of Honor, and are Stu Grayson, Jose "The
07:20 Assistant", Parker Boudreaux, Dasher Gonzalez, Slim J, Gravity, Jura Joel, Anthony Henry
07:25 of The Workhorsemen and The Boys.
07:28 Grayson was originally released by AEW in 2022 but re-signed with the company in 2023
07:33 to reunite with the Dark Order.
07:35 Gravity had been heavily criticised recently for a match on Collision that fell apart,
07:39 and The Boys were involved in an angle on Ring of Honor that was set to pay off this
07:43 weekend in a match with Dalton Castle and Johnny TV.
07:47 Anthony Henry was originally set to be in the AEW Tag Team Tournament with his partner
07:51 JD Drake, but suffered a broken jaw at a Deadlock Pro match.
07:55 It's certainly newsworthy and perhaps controversial considering that Punk also revealed during
08:00 his Ariel Helwani interview that he paid for his own surgery following his tricep injury
08:06 at All Out 2022 and that no one spoke to him during that time.
08:10 Also interesting is Parker Boudreaux, who only tweeted yesterday that he was still with
08:14 AEW.
08:15 He has since deleted that tweet.
08:17 That was a lot of news and we'll get into my review of Raw in a bit, but first let's
08:21 put over this guy who had an awesome Support WrestleTalk sign at Raw last night that told
08:27 you wonderful viewers what you already knew.
08:30 Steiner Math is better than all other promos.
08:34 Big shout out to the wonderful Alex Queen of the Ring for sending that to us.
08:37 We all know who the Steiner Math is.
08:40 No, no, no.
08:41 What do you want?
08:42 What do I want?
08:43 I want to put an end to all of this.
08:46 You keep saying that the math promo's better than the pipe bomb promo.
08:49 You know it isn't right.
08:50 But it is.
08:51 You know it is.
08:52 It's more iconic.
08:53 Everyone agrees.
08:54 The polls agree with me.
08:56 No, no, no.
08:57 You're doing this and this whole sort of troll-like mentality.
09:01 That's what's gotten into people and the bots and the April Fool's joke.
09:06 You're deluding yourself.
09:07 No, the polls don't mean anything.
09:09 I've got to take this into my own hands.
09:12 So at this Friday's PFK 40 Years of WrestleMania tournament, I'm going to prove once and for
09:19 all by winning that tournament that the pipe bomb is better than the math.
09:26 A tournament you say?
09:27 Well, what if I had an announcement of my own to make about that tournament?
09:57 What a great announcement by me.
10:09 How about, let's not make this about the tournament.
10:12 This is bigger than the tournament.
10:14 I challenge you to a match.
10:16 The semi-main event of the tournament this Friday.
10:20 We'll even let the fans pick the stipulation for that match.
10:23 And when I beat you, I will prove to you that math is better than pipe bomb.
10:29 And I'll do it.
10:30 One, two, three and a third.
10:35 No, well, before then, you can show your allegiance to the Pipe Bomb Greater Than Math cause by
10:42 going to WrestleShop.com right now and buying your Pipe Bomb Greater Than Math t-shirt.
10:48 I know, that's what you want, really.
10:53 That's the true pull.
10:54 Why are you laughing?
10:55 I take your announcement, then I trump it with my own announcement.
11:00 You bring another announcement, I'm going to trump that announcement as well.
11:03 Because you can also go to WrestleShop and buy the Steiner Math Better Than Pipe Bomb
11:08 promo t-shirt.
11:09 Then support of me.
11:11 Show it to all your friends.
11:12 Take it to your local wrestling shows and show everyone that you agree that the Steiner
11:16 Math promo is better than the Pipe Bomb.
11:19 And I will prove it this Friday when I beat you in the 40 years of WrestleMania tournament
11:24 over on PartsFUNknown.
11:25 Go and subscribe.
11:26 Poof.
11:27 Well, finally, let's get into this Raw review - aka Seth's Plan B Sucks edition of Monday
11:32 Night Raw - in about 5 minutes.
11:35 The show opened with The Rock coming out for a promo where the commentators told us that
11:38 this weekend will be Rocky's first match in 8 years - so that Erick Rowan match does
11:43 count.
11:44 And he recapped the Big Cody Rhodes angle from last week.
11:46 He brought out Roman Reigns who threatened to leave again if the crowd kept chanting
11:49 yeet at him, and said that he and Rock have made wrestling cool.
11:53 Seth Rollins came out through the crowd and wanted a fight for tonight - challenging either
11:58 The Rock or Roman Reigns to a main event match, which the crowd went bonkers for.
12:05 So it stands to reason that they booed heavily when it was revealed that Seth would instead
12:09 face Solo Sakoa in a Bloodline Rules match.
12:11 And you can tell this wasn't a reaction WWE wanted, because they edited the boos out
12:15 in a recap later on.
12:17 And why wouldn't this crowd boo?
12:19 This felt like a 2018/19 WWE audience who's booing the booking rather than the storyline.
12:26 Seth teased either The Rock or Roman Reigns wrestling, and instead they got a guy who's
12:31 done nothing since beating Cena last year.
12:34 Of course they were going to boo.
12:36 Thankfully the crowd were hot for everything else in the segment, and most of the wrestling
12:39 later on in the show.
12:40 DIY teamed with New Day in a losing effort to Judgment Day in a match that felt like
12:44 it was missing its fourth or fifth gear.
12:46 The action was good, but you would expect more given this is an eight man tag with all
12:50 of these guys in it.
12:51 There was some concern over Johnny Gargano getting hurt, but Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful
12:54 is reporting that he's fine.
12:56 The bigger bit of news is that commentary confirmed that this Saturday's ladder match
12:59 is for both sets of titles individually, and the match will continue until both sets of
13:05 belts are taken down - basically confirming this will be the time that WWE split the belts
13:12 up.
13:13 Roman Reigns announced that he will induct Paul Heyman into the WWE Hall of Fame, which
13:16 was a nice choice, and Sami Zayn went for a big training session with Chad Gable.
13:21 Gable pushed Sami until he was broken, then wanted to push him more.
13:24 It was like that episode of Louis Theroux's Weird Weekend, but with less WCW and less
13:29 vomit.
13:30 Sami admitted that he was scared of letting people down again at WrestleMania, and Chad
13:34 said he wants to bring the fire out of Sami Zayn that's been missing since last year.
13:39 Zayn trained some more, and this time got out of Chad's surprise chokehold and the
13:44 two grabbed fists in a movie freeze frame moment.
13:47 I really, really liked this, and as I said last week, I just wish this had been given
13:52 more time and we'd had more of them.
13:55 Because it meant that we didn't get to see much of the results of the training in Sami's
13:59 match with Bronson Reed.
14:00 They had a good match, and Sami once again had it set up to win when Gunther dragged
14:04 Gable out from backstage and laid out Sami Zayn.
14:07 I guess the Bronson Reed match ended in a no contest.
14:11 Gunther beat up Zayn some more, but Zayn has no quit in him and got back to his feet, so
14:15 Gunther laid him out with the title belt.
14:17 It was an effective angle, and in particular, I loved that Gunther only finally put Sami
14:22 down via the title belt - something he won't be able to do in their WrestleMania match.
14:28 I thought that was a nice touch.
14:30 Jey Uso announced that Lil Wayne is going to WrestleMania, and Ivy Nile and Maxine Dupree
14:34 beat The Way in a two minute match that had very little heat.
14:37 Indi and Candice disagreed, and then Bump Heads beating some Maxine rolling up Indi
14:41 for the win.
14:42 Drew McIntyre held a funeral for CM Punk's WrestleMania dreams, and said that Seth Rollins
14:46 saw Jared Leto's Joker - aka Worst Joker - and made it his whole personality.
14:51 Ouch.
14:52 This was a great promo from Drew, and WWE also announced that Clash at the Castle returns
14:56 to the UK this year in June - this time from McIntyre's home country, Scotland.
15:02 One has to imagine that Drew is re-signing with the company at this point.
15:06 After missing last week's show, Ivar returned to action against Ricochet in a tremendous
15:10 big vs. little match that emphasised how great it is to have Ricochet on your roster.
15:15 He won when he hit a fallaway slam on Ivar and a 630.
15:18 Both men will be in the Battle Royal this Friday.
15:20 Judgment Day had an awkward hangout with Legado del Fantasma, as Dominik Mysterio had that
15:24 role where you try to introduce your two sets of friends together for a party but neither
15:29 really know or get on with each other.
15:31 I just got flashbacks to my own 23rd birthday which was awfully awkward.
15:36 And they set up Andrade vs. Ricochet for next week, where if Andrade wins, he'll join
15:40 Judgment Day.
15:41 I think Andrade has other plans.
15:43 Becky Lynch cut a promo on Rhea Ripley and the two had another brawl ahead of WrestleMania,
15:47 and Damage Control beat Shayna Baszler, Zoey Stark and Tegan Nox to build them up ahead
15:51 of their trios match at Mania.
15:52 The match did build to the Team Kick stuff at the end, but commentary didn't make much
15:56 of it and Kairi Sane hit the Insane Elbow for the win.
15:59 And the main event saw Seth Rollins take on Solo Sakoa in a Bloodlines Rules match.
16:04 So what is Bloodline Rules?
16:07 Will it be The Rock on commentary?
16:09 Will it be Jimmy as the timekeeper?
16:11 Will Paul Heyman be the referee?
16:13 Nope, it's just a standard DQ match with tables and chairs.
16:17 Fair enough.
16:18 Seth had the match won, but Jimmy Uso ran down for the save.
16:21 Jey came out to attack Jimmy, and both got chumpetised by the much bigger star in The
16:25 Rock.
16:26 I guess the match ended in a no contest.
16:28 But as Seth told Cathy Kelly before the match, he always has a plan B.
16:33 And his plan B wasn't going to turn on Roman Reigns again.
16:37 Giggity.
16:38 It was to bring out Cody Rhodes who wasn't even supposed to be there today because he
16:42 wasn't medically cleared.
16:43 They beat up The Rock for a bit, but Roman Reigns attacked Cody and he and The Rock whipped
16:47 them both like government mules to close out the show.
16:50 So Seth's plan B was to get beaten up by The Bloodline.
16:53 Great plan, Seth.
16:54 It was a good closing angle, but last week set an impossibly high bar to meet.
16:58 It was a good show, but not a super hot go-home show considering the star power.
17:03 So this week's Raw is 4 out of 5.
17:05 Now to whet your appetite for this Friday's parts fun known WWE 2K24 WrestleMania tournament,
17:11 check out the latest episode of the Monday Night War where we play IGN Mode.
