The rises come as the final local government finance settlement for the year ahead makes available sixty four point seven billion pounds for local government - an increase of seven point five percent in cash terms. But how will council tax rises affect you?

00:00 Nearly all local authorities across England and Wales are planning to hike the council tax rates by the maximum amount allowed.
00:09 In fact, research from the County Council's network found that all but eight top-tier councils out of 136 are planning to put rates up by at least 4.99% next month.
00:19 It means that millions of households will be forking over much more each year for key services like waste collection, streetlights, upkeep of roads and more.
00:28 The proposed increases overall will be an approximate average increase of around £103 more for a Band D property.
00:35 This means the overall council requirement in England is around £41.2 billion.
00:41 And here in the South West, the picture is no different.
00:44 Bristol City Council has confirmed an increase of the maximum amount, 4.99%, for the year 2024-2025.
00:51 Mayor Marvin Reeves said the rise was to help plug the budget gap, explaining "We have to balance the budget so we have to make savings."
