00:00 Hi everybody, it's your old pal Uncle Hondo from the Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast.
00:07 Great to be with you today.
00:08 As you know, I'm your Las Vegas Raiders beat writer covering, of course, Las Vegas Raiders
00:12 for Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation.
00:14 Great to be with you today.
00:16 We've got a ton of information to dig into.
00:19 We're going to get at it and go at it.
00:21 A lot of things going on, a lot of really good questions from you, a lot of different
00:25 topics, all Raider-centric today.
00:28 And sorry, so here we go.
00:30 Let's get going.
00:32 First one, question comes from, by the way, you can follow me on IG @HondoSR on ex-formerly
00:38 known as Twitter.
00:40 When you go to @HondoCarpenter, and remember, you can email me at SpartanNationMail@yahoo.com.
00:51 Now I need to quickly tell you something.
00:54 Some of you send me voluminous amounts of email.
00:59 And if you send a bunch, I get too much email and it just doesn't get read.
01:03 I will read one a week from you, and then the rest, it just has to go because it gets
01:08 so much email.
01:09 It's not me being a jerk.
01:10 It's not me not caring.
01:12 And I don't have to say anything.
01:13 In fact, somebody told me just don't say anything.
01:15 I don't think that's fair.
01:17 I don't think it's fair to not read an email, not at least give an explanation.
01:21 Like I had one guy that sent me, I don't know, four, five, six, seven emails in a couple
01:25 of days.
01:26 I just simply don't have time.
01:28 And some of you send some that aren't questions.
01:30 It's just opinions.
01:31 And they do get looked at.
01:32 I just don't respond because you gave your opinion.
01:35 I heard it and we move on.
01:37 But I just can't read them all.
01:49 Sorry.
01:50 I just can't read them all.

05:02 I just can't read them all.
05:03 I just can't read them all.
05:04 I just can't read them all.
05:05 I just can't read them all.
05:06 I just can't read them all.
05:07 I just can't read them all.
05:08 I just can't read them all.
05:10 I don't know how you have any faith in someone who can't stay healthy.
05:15 Great kid.
05:16 Great kid.
05:17 Great kid.
05:18 Great kid.
05:19 All of the intangibles that only God can give.
05:21 He is a mountain.
05:22 He is a mountain.
05:23 He is a mountain.
05:24 He is a mountain.
05:25 But the best ability is availability.
05:28 That should be part of y'all's drinking game because I say it all the time.
05:31 And I say it all year.
05:32 Or maybe you just don't have a drinking game.
05:36 But whatever.
05:37 I'm laughing because my wife made a joke about y'all's drinking game.
05:45 She said do mimosas count.
05:47 Anyways, everybody can be big on them.
05:56 But you got to come through.
05:59 You got to stay healthy.
06:01 And listen, just because a guy gets injured a lot doesn't mean they're a wimp.
06:05 I'm not claiming that.
06:06 He's a good kid.
06:07 But just -- Max Crosby.
06:11 I asked around, as you guys know, I was reporting about Max being injured long
06:19 before anyone even knew about it.
06:21 And I asked around and I asked several NFL executives, what are the chances,
06:27 what are the chances that other players would have played with Max's injury?
06:37 And every executive is like, no chance at all.
06:40 I mean, the guy potentially could have had his leg amputated if he went septic
06:46 at a very high level.
06:49 Max is a unicorn.
06:51 Max plays through injuries that other guys would say, nope, can't go.
06:55 Now, I'm not saying that that's what people need to do.
07:00 But what I am saying is there are some guys that nothing is going to keep them
07:04 off the field.
07:06 Then there are some guys that a lot keep them off the field.
07:09 Then there are some guys who are off the field legitimately,
07:12 but they just can't stay healthy.
07:15 And everybody wants to talk about Dalton because of how he looks.
07:20 But do you notice there isn't a lot of talk about how he plays?
07:24 He's got to put it on tape.
07:27 And, again, rooting for him, he's a great kid.
07:30 Not a good kid.
07:31 He's a great kid.
07:33 A lot of talent.
07:34 When he's healthy, he can do some stuff.
07:38 Got to put it on tape.
07:41 Next, this one comes to us from Colby, C-O-L-B-V.
07:46 Dear Uncle Hondo, I'd love to hear your opinion on what you're hearing about the
07:50 direction of the Raiders are going to get to go at O-line.
07:54 I personally think one of those young offensive tackles is in play at 13 in the
08:00 draft and compete with Mumford.
08:03 I would love to see them take a flyer on a vet, like Kevin -- well,
08:08 obviously he's out -- the guard.
08:12 Thank you so much for your work covering the Raiders.
08:15 You've become a must-listen for me every single day.
08:19 Well, yeah, I mean, I had him in my last draft as an offensive tackle.
08:24 I have been offensive tackle, offensive tackle, defensive line all along.
08:30 I think there could be a corner.
08:32 I think there's still a chance that they address that in free agency.
08:40 Nothing imminent.
08:42 I'm not implying that.
08:44 I just think that's something that could be addressed.
08:48 And I know that they would like to, so let's see how the cards fall out there.
08:52 But, yeah, I had in my last draft that that happens, and we're going to see.
08:58 So let's keep moving.
08:59 Next, this comes to us -- no name here, and I apologize because we don't read
09:10 emails with no names.
09:12 So I'm going to assume one of my staffers made a mistake because we don't read
09:16 emails with no names.
09:18 So I'm assuming a staffer made a mistake, so I'm going to read it.
09:22 And -- but I apologize.
09:26 And just know if you don't give a name, we don't read it, and they know that.
09:30 So clearly I think they made a mistake.
09:32 It says, "I message you today in regards to your mock draft 2.0.
09:36 I am well aware that things change the farther that you get into the draft
09:40 process, but I was shocked to see that both J.C. Latham and Terry and Arnold
09:44 were both still on the board when you selected the tackle from Penn State.
09:49 Not long ago, you made it sound like one of these two were to be the pick if the
09:55 desired quarterback doesn't fall into the lap.
09:58 Is that the reflection of how you think the Raiders have the players ranked,
10:03 or this is a reflection of what you have been hearing from around the league?
10:08 Keep up the good work."
10:09 Oh, no.
10:12 This is -- the person's name was in the email.
10:14 Tony Kipe?
10:17 Tony Kipe.
10:20 All right, so that's from Tony Kipe.
10:22 All right, Tony, first of all, it's a reflection of what the NFL players thought.
10:28 The gentleman from Penn State fell in that mock draft based on some teams making
10:33 some picks that didn't necessarily make a ton of sense.
10:36 And so that's a guy that earlier when I said Latham or Arnold didn't think that
10:41 he would be falling there.
10:44 So that's where that all came about.
10:46 I hope that makes sense to you.
10:48 Love Terry and Arnold.
10:49 Love Latham.
10:51 Love the young man from Penn.
10:52 There are several players at 13 that I just think are awesome.
10:56 So there you go.
10:57 Now, this is the one that there's no name, and I apologize, but I'm going to
11:03 believe my staff probably missed this one, so please forgive me.
11:07 And don't send one without a name because it just gets deleted.
11:11 Hondo, love the podcast.
11:13 My son and I listen daily and discuss the topics by phone since we live in
11:19 different states.
11:21 It helps keep us connected to one another, and now my grandkids are part of the
11:26 nation.
11:28 Truly a family tradition.
11:29 Okay, I don't see the question there, but I know that was from a gentleman in
11:32 the villages in Florida.
11:34 Don't know how that got in.
11:35 Sorry, everybody.
11:37 Oh, okay, now here's the question.
11:39 Okay, there was the space.
11:41 Now, if the Raiders stay where they are and in the draft, do you think it would
11:46 be wise to draft a cornerback first and an offensive lineman second since the
11:51 depth of offensive line seems much deeper than cornerback?
11:55 And this is from Mike Peterson in the villages.
11:58 Okay, sorry about that, Mike.
12:00 It was a two-paragraph and they didn't put it into one.
12:03 It depends.
12:05 Okay, I think you're going to get quality offensive lineman in the second round,
12:10 so I would have zero issue with going offensive line in the first round and the
12:14 second round.
12:16 I think there's even going to be some quality in the third round.
12:22 So, yeah, I think a shutdown corner like a Terry and Arnold would be humongous.
12:32 If they don't address it.
12:34 Now, they could address it by signing a free agent.
12:38 They could address it by trade.
12:40 You never know.
12:42 But if they don't address it, I would love to see the Raiders get Terry and Arnold.
12:49 I think if a quarterback were to drop, quarterback is viable, but I don't see a
12:55 quarterback dropping.
12:57 So, offensive line, defensive line, or corner are what you're going to see at 13
13:02 if they stay at 13.
13:05 And, yes, I still believe that the Raiders -- I mean, don't rule out another
13:10 defensive lineman.
13:14 Don't rule out another defensive lineman for the Raiders in the first round.
13:22 I told you guys this before.
13:24 AP watched his New York G-men beat Tom Brady and the Patriots undefeated.
13:33 Many called it the best team in NFL history.
13:37 And Antonio Pearson, the Patriots, bam, pow, right in the kisser.
13:42 Why?
13:44 With a fearsome defensive line.
13:53 That reminds me of that movie.
13:55 I think it was about Josie Wills.
13:58 Here we go.
14:00 Now, Hondo, I hear you on the time needed for 8.04, but we're in compete now
14:07 mode, like you said.
14:10 But how long can we evaluate it at 8.04 before Devante says enough, trade me?
14:16 Seems like limbo logic on the team part.
14:20 Wait and see, most important position, but win now this season.
14:26 Seems contradictory on Telesco's part.
14:29 When does Devante draw the line?
14:31 Or is there a line?
14:33 Is he fine with 8.04 or Minshew running the offense?
14:36 And if things go south a few weeks in the season, what do you ask for a trade?
14:40 Mike W.
14:41 Mike, God bless you, buddy.
14:43 I love you.
14:44 But some of your logic in here makes zero sense to me.
14:48 I'm not attacking you or your character.
14:52 The kid played nine games.
14:56 He went five and four.
14:59 His last four games, eight touchdowns, no interceptions.
15:03 His last five games, nine touchdowns, one interception.
15:09 They were down two offensive staff members, no OTAs, no mini camp, no
15:14 training camp, after the trade deadline, trying to change an offense.
15:18 And really the change wasn't a whole lot of change.
15:20 It was more taking stuff out.
15:23 Dear God, after year one, people were ready to fire Peyton Manning.
15:29 And I don't know that he's Peyton.
15:31 I'm not saying he is.
15:33 But oh, my God, what about Devante wanting a trade?
15:36 Devante has made it clear.
15:40 He believes in it.
15:42 Aiden O'Connell.
15:44 He said it.
15:46 Oh, he's got to say it.
15:48 You don't know Devante.
15:49 He ain't got to say nothing.
15:51 I'm around him.
15:53 Devante doesn't say one thing he doesn't want to say.
15:56 In fact, when he doesn't want to talk, he just walks out of the locker room.
15:59 I think it's hilarious how people -- and, Mike, you didn't do this.
16:03 Oh, well, this player had to say that.
16:05 I've actually had players say to me and send me screenshots of people's
16:10 comments saying, "Do they think I'm a liar?"
16:13 I don't have to say.
16:20 I mean, I'm sorry.
16:21 But the whole world isn't sitting around, "Is Devante happy?
16:24 Is he going to want a trade?"
16:29 First of all, that makes Devante sound like he's a diva and it's all about him.
16:35 And how can you call it a fault on Telesco's logic?
16:39 The coach came out and said, "AP said it.
16:42 That's our guy.
16:43 You got to beat him."
16:45 That's what AP said.
16:49 I mean, the kids had nine games.
16:53 I said, "Enough, throw him out."
16:55 Really?
16:56 Nine games?
16:57 Nine.
16:59 And his last five, nine touchdowns, one interception.
17:04 Okay.
17:06 And here's the sad part.
17:08 Some of y'all may be right, but it is a wild guess in the park.
17:13 A wild guess in the park.
17:18 That locker room believes in Aiden O'Connell.
17:23 No.
17:26 I don't think anybody knows what they think of Minshew.
17:28 They haven't played with him yet.
17:34 But I have said, I am not convinced that Aiden O'Connell is the next Kenny Stabler.
17:41 I'm the one that said, "Go sign a veteran and draft a rookie."
17:48 I don't think that anything's promised.
17:54 I think you let everybody compete.
17:59 Man, some of y'all acting like this kid's crap.
18:04 There are other teams that want Aiden O'Connell.
18:08 Good teams.
18:12 This is a good player.
18:18 He may be a career backup.
18:21 But, man, he is showing you enough that there is interest there,
18:26 and there are a lot of people in that locker room that believe in him.
18:30 I don't get it.
18:32 Don't understand it.
18:33 Again, I'm not attacking you, Mike.
18:36 You are welcome any opinion.
18:38 I just don't understand it.
18:40 I know the players don't understand it.
18:44 That locker room believes in him.
18:47 And we're going to get into more AO4 talk, and you'll know why even more in a minute.
18:51 But I think you've got to go draft a rookie.
18:55 If you think there is a world-changing quarterback available,
19:01 if you think there is a franchise-changing quarterback out there, you go get him.
19:08 I'm on the record saying that.
19:12 Do you think the Raiders should draft a rookie this year?
19:14 I think they should draft one every year.
19:17 Always keep the pipeline going, or at least every other year.
19:21 But, man, don't get it.
19:25 Next comes to us from Derek in Boise, Idaho.
19:29 Hondo, I'm not going to refer to you as uncle because I'm older than you.
19:33 Well, good.
19:34 That's not a requirement, but I appreciate it.
19:37 Getting off topic of free agency and the draft,
19:40 could you explain what players are and aren't allowed to do in the building
19:45 during the offseason?
19:47 Are they allowed to have meetings with coaches?
19:50 Can they work with each other?
19:52 For example, QBs, wide receivers at the facility, Derek in Boise, Idaho.
19:56 So they're allowed to go in, they're allowed to work out,
19:59 they get treatments, whatever, but they're not meeting with coaches,
20:02 going over strategy and changes in playbook, none of that.
20:06 There used to be some teams that abused the offseason,
20:12 and so now none of that's allowed.
20:15 It allows it to truly be an offseason.
20:18 Quarterbacks and wide receivers can go to local parks or wherever they want
20:22 and do football-type things.
20:24 They're allowed to do that.
20:27 They're allowed to do that.
20:28 I mean, that's on their own.
20:29 They're grown men.
20:31 But in the building, they're allowed to work out and lift their weights
20:36 and that kind of stuff.
20:37 But if they see the coaches, they can explain pleasantries.
20:40 "Hey, how you doing?" "Good to see you."
20:42 "Hey, how are you?" "Good."
20:45 "How's the family?" "Great."
20:47 "But not, 'Hey, I added 44 new pages to the playbook, you want to see it?'"
20:51 No, none of that's going on.
20:53 None of that at all.
20:54 That's a great question, Dirk.
20:55 Thank you.
20:56 Now, hello, Hondo.
20:58 Any thoughts on Anthony Brown, Jr., been reading up on him,
21:02 watched him, film on him with the Ducks and Ravens,
21:08 limited stats but very mobile, intriguing, quietly wondering if maybe what the
21:14 Raiders are looking for in a draft quarterback may already be in the fold.
21:20 I need to also say I sincerely respect your joy and gratitude to your family
21:26 that you show on your face when you speak of them.
21:29 That's some Kerry T.
21:31 Well, thank you, Kerry.
21:32 My family is a great subject with me, terrific subject.
21:38 Amazing children, great wife.
21:43 Wonderful parents, great in-laws.
21:46 So, thank you.
21:48 I get a lot of people who complain that I talk about my family,
21:51 and if that's how you feel, you're welcome to go watch other podcasts
21:55 because my family knows the amount of time that my job takes,
21:59 and they never complain.
22:02 But I want them to always know I really enjoy my job.
22:08 I really enjoy getting to be your beat writer.
22:12 I really enjoy talking Raiders.
22:15 Matter of fact, somebody was saying, one of my members of my family was saying
22:19 the other day, "We need to do a family picture with everybody in Raiders stuff
22:23 but dad."
22:27 But people will say to me, "Oh, man, you got a dream job.
22:31 I bet you'll love your job."
22:32 No.
22:34 I enjoy my job, but I love my family.
22:39 Yeah, talking about young quarterbacks, I think they're looking everywhere.
22:43 Don't rule anybody out.
22:45 Don't rule anybody out.
22:49 They're looking under -- you never know where the next future quarterback's
22:53 coming from.
22:54 Look at Brock Purdy.
22:56 Look at Kurt Warner.
22:58 You never know.
22:59 Look at Jim Pluckett.
23:00 Look at Rich Cannon.
23:01 You never know.
23:04 That's what makes this game just so incredibly fun.
23:12 You really are trying to force teams to relinquish an oblonged ellipsoid,
23:18 beating each other up, doing things to each other that will send you to prison
23:24 if you did them anywhere else outside of those white lines,
23:28 and you just never know where help's coming.
23:31 I love that part of the game.
23:33 Great question, Kerry.
23:34 Thank you.
23:35 Next one comes to us from Chaplain Eric in Packer Land.
23:39 "I want to ask you about AO4.
23:42 I remember you saying on the podcast a few times that AO4 was more mobile
23:47 while at Purdue, while in the Josh McDaniels and Harder Greece schemes,
23:52 he was a statue in the pocket and got lit up by the likes of Khalil and others.
23:58 Getzey wants mobility and a new scheme.
24:01 Minshew has some mobility.
24:03 Do you know if AO4 is working on his mobility this offseason?"
24:11 He doesn't have to be Patrick Mahomes, but I'd like to know AO4 is working on
24:15 mobility, especially if he wants to win the QB1 position.
24:18 Thoughts?
24:19 First of all, he doesn't have to win QB1.
24:21 He is QB1.
24:22 He needs to hold on to QB1.
24:24 Number two, and I'm sure you've missed it, I've talked about this several times,
24:27 as soon as the season's over, he started working on mobility.
24:33 Now, Getzey has had a lot of things attributed to him that are not 100% accurate.
24:42 So I actually am going to read you the quote from Getzey.
24:51 This is what Getzey said when asked about what he wanted in a quarterback.
24:55 Quote, "Kind of like anything, you'd like to have a little bit of everything,
25:00 right?
25:01 And I think in this game, I think it's really important that you have some type
25:06 of escape ability.
25:08 It doesn't mean you have to be as dynamic as Justin was, but I think you have to
25:15 have escape ability.
25:17 You have to be able to have the second chance and create the extended play,
25:22 whether it's just sliding in the pocket or whether it's extending it with your
25:26 feet outside the pocket.
25:28 So all those things are really important.
25:31 It was on display in the Super Bowl, as we just saw here in Vegas.
25:36 That ability of both of those guys to create the second chance of the play is an
25:43 important part in our league.
25:45 And when you're trying to go win games, you've got to go on third.
25:51 You've got to be good on third down and in the red zone.
25:54 And when you're good at those two things, it usually is because your quarterback
26:02 has some kind of cool dynamic to be able to split the ball around, which we were
26:10 pretty good at that thing the last two years.
26:14 Okay.
26:16 A04 has been working on this since the season got over.
26:20 If for some reason you've missed it, when he was at Purdue, he showed some
26:25 mobility.
26:27 He was not Patrick Mahomes, but he wasn't asked to be.
26:30 Okay.
26:31 Then he comes under to Josh McDaniels, who used to tell Derek and everyone else,
26:35 "Stay in the pocket.
26:38 Go back and look at Mack Jones.
26:40 Go back and look at Tom Brady."
26:42 That's how he wanted his quarterbacks to be.
26:46 Jimmy Garoppolo, same way.
26:49 So since the season's been over, AP was very clear to him, "You're going to have
26:55 to get some mobility now."
26:58 Peyton Manning used to occasionally run.
27:01 Occasionally.
27:02 I'm not calling him.
27:03 Tom Brady would run and surprise people.
27:06 Sometimes it's just taking two steps to the right or two steps to the left.
27:10 Sometimes it's just moving a little bit in the pocket.
27:13 Sometimes it's stepping up.
27:16 Then there are guys like Patrick Mahomes.
27:19 Minshew is already more mobile, but he's been allowed to be.
27:23 A04 is more mobile and showed it in college, but he didn't with the Raiders.
27:27 He's been working on it.
27:29 Again, I want to make sure everyone understands A04 is QB1 going into the
27:34 offseason, but he's going to have to keep it, and he has to compete.
27:38 I love that.
27:40 I have no issues with that whatsoever.
27:43 That's why I have said since before the season was over, you draft a quarterback,
27:49 you sign a veteran, you have Aiden O'Connell, let's roll.
27:53 Let the best one win it.
27:54 This is what I love about pro football and the National Football League.
27:58 There's no participation trophies.
28:00 Dear God, can we just outlaw those?
28:03 Destroying of a generation, that mentality of.
28:07 We can't ever tell Johnny he lost.
28:09 Some people lose.
28:13 I love that.
28:15 Just pure me against you.
28:18 Who's going to win it, baby?
28:20 Who's going to win it, baby?
28:23 And you let him go compete.
28:25 I don't think that you've seen enough to rule out A04 as a trash,
28:30 and I don't think you've seen enough to say he's Patrick Mahomes,
28:34 but I think you've seen enough to say, okay, okay.
28:38 There could be something here.
28:40 I personally think there might be.
28:44 I'm not willing to bet my life on it.
28:45 I haven't seen enough.
28:48 I've heard he's working on it.
28:51 I've heard he's one of those guys busting his tail, working hard.
28:56 I'm going to tell you, a lot of folk have bet against A04 in his career
29:01 and been made to look silly for it.
29:03 I'm not betting against it.
29:05 I'm just pretending I'm from Missouri.
29:07 Show me.
29:09 So there you go, everybody.
29:11 Thanks for joining us this Wednesday.
29:13 Do not miss tomorrow's podcast.
29:15 It's going to be really good.
29:16 Got some special things working for you also, by the way.
29:18 Got a lot coming.
29:19 So from all of us to all of you, God bless you.
29:22 Have a great day.
