00:40 Good morning Doc Flores, Dianne Carerput, and Rodrigo Rosetta.
00:43 Doc, what is the primary goal of the Ravist Awareness Month?
00:46 And why is it important to pay attention to issues like this?
00:52 [Filipino newsreel narration]
01:16 Okay Doc, what are the common symptoms of Ravist and how can an individual identify it?
01:26 There are three stages of symptoms when a person is affected by Ravist.
01:33 The first one is called Prodrome.
01:37 This is the time when Ravist is still entering the body.
01:42 This is when they can have pain where they are struck and no feeling of pain.
01:51 The second one is when they have a fever, headache, and cough.
01:56 After that, we can go to what we call the acute neurologic phase or the furious state.
02:02 This is the time when the patient is agitated, irritated, and hyperactive.
02:08 This is when symptoms like confusion, delirium, and hallucinations appear.
02:15 This is when they are afraid of water, hydrophobia, and they have muscle weakness.
02:21 And lastly, they can continue to be in a coma or become comatose,
02:26 stop breathing, and most importantly, die.
02:31 If not treated early, this might lead to death.
02:35 Doc, what are the possible symptoms of Ravist?
02:38 And what are the animals that are usually transmitted with Ravist virus?
02:43 The symptoms of Ravist are that animals are really sick.
02:48 And this is transmitted to humans through direct contact.
02:52 These contacts are contact with saliva or saliva of dogs through the mouth.
02:58 This can also be transmitted through air. If the level of the virus is high in the environment,
03:06 like in caves, Ravist can be transmitted.
03:10 So, the second question is what animals can be transmitted with Ravist.
03:14 The most common is dogs, cats, and in the Philippines, even bats.
03:25 But we Filipinos love to take care of our pets, especially dogs, cats, and pets at home.
03:34 So, usually, accidents can be a sign of Ravist.
03:37 What should a person do if they are bitten by a dog or any other pet that may have Ravist?
03:47 It's simple. If a dog or cat bites you, you should be calm.
03:56 So, don't panic.
03:57 The first thing to do is to wash your wound with clean water and soap.
04:04 So, vigorously wash the area of the wound.
04:07 And after that, let the wound dry.
04:10 We can put antiseptic like COVID-19 and other antiseptic.
04:16 Third, we should consult the nearest hospital or barangay center
04:23 to assess if we need to give post-exposure Ravist prophylaxis.
04:30 How many shots are you saying are post-exposure Ravist?
04:35 Because I understand, is it correct that it's three shots if I'm not mistaken?
04:39 Educate us, please, Doc.
04:42 It depends on the route of the vaccination.
04:47 There are two types of vaccination, which are called intradermal and intramuscular.
04:51 But usually, it's between three to four shots for post-exposure Ravist prophylaxis.
04:58 How soon should we get vaccinated if we are bitten by a dog or any other pet?
05:09 It's better to consult the nearest hospital within 24 to 48 hours
05:13 if you are bitten by a dog to get vaccinated.
05:16 And the longest period of time to consult is one week.
05:21 Because there is a medicine that we can only give within one week from the bite.
05:28 So, immediately consult the nearest hospital.
05:31 Doc, I have my own experience. My dog was bitten by our neighbor.
05:38 The doctor said that even if he was vaccinated, he still needs to be observed for a few days.
05:44 Why does he need to be observed, Doc?
05:46 It depends on what vaccine was given.
05:51 We have a vaccine that is given to make the body resistant to Ravist.
06:00 We say that the dog should be observed to see if the dog will develop symptoms of Ravist.
06:07 And if the dog dies within one or two weeks,
06:10 we think that the dog died because of a possible Ravist infection.
06:15 When this happens, we ask the patient to come back to give them immunoglobulin
06:21 or the neutralizer for Ravist virus in case it's really a Ravist infection.
06:29 That's why we still need to observe.
06:32 Doc, the role of pet owners is also important.
06:36 Their pets' vaccines should be updated.
06:40 Before we let you go, Doc,
06:42 please give your last reminder to our fellow countrymen.
06:45 And if there are activities that the public can participate in,
06:49 especially during Ravist Awareness Month, go ahead, Doc.
06:53 It's very important to increase our awareness about Ravist.
06:59 For all people, our health is in our own hands.
07:04 So, to prevent Ravist, we need a holistic approach.
07:09 Number one, take good care of your pets.
07:12 Make sure that they are updated on the vaccine and they are healthy.
07:18 Number two, don't let them walk on the streets and get infected by exposure to other dogs.
07:26 Third, it's important to be aware of Ravist disease
07:31 and to know how to prevent Ravist disease by getting vaccinated.
07:37 Thank you very much for giving us important information about Ravist
07:43 and the purpose of Ravist Awareness Month, Dr. Amado Flores III.
07:48 Thank you very much, Doc.
