Hosts Brad Perry and Lexy Romano present an entertaining and informative look at local trending topics and community events occurring in Arizona.
Transcript
00:00 From 44th Street in Camelback, this is the Arizona Daily Mix.
00:06 And it all starts right now.
00:09 Good morning and welcome to the Arizona Daily Mix. I am Brad LePere.
00:19 And I'm Lexi Romano.
00:20 Okay, today on the show, Lexi, let me ask you, what is your morning drink?
00:24 Definitely coffee. Morning, noon, night, all times of day, coffee is it.
00:31 I mean, not in this cup right now, but every other time.
00:35 I know there are a lot of people out there who, of course, use it as their daily caffeine intake.
00:41 So we're going to be talking to one of those people who has a recipe for you later in the show that will help you with some coffee.
00:49 I mean, that's great. I just thought coffee just, you know, had the one recipe, you know, water over beans.
00:55 I mean, if they came up with another way, I'm very interested to hear.
01:00 I think it's to help your caffeine intake. There it is. That's what the recipe is for.
01:07 Okay, so it's like coffee, but you put other things into the coffee?
01:11 I think they take everything out of the coffee, so it's not so much caffeine.
01:15 Yeah, all right. I'm intrigued.
01:19 I'm intrigued. All right. Well, that'll be great later in the show.
01:23 Plus, if you're looking for some easy DIY crafts to either redo your space or keep the kids occupied,
01:29 well, we have artist Laura Madden here with some great tips.
01:33 And I love when she comes in because her stuff is so unique.
01:37 And this time I have to geek out a little bit because she did kind of an Arlo themed, lots of A's.
01:43 And she has his name kind of made. Oh, it's so cool.
01:45 Cute. There you go. Plus, there is never a bad time for Italian food, as we know.
01:50 And the Sicilian butcher has dropped a new menu.
01:54 And we'll have you crave an Italian food until you try it.
01:57 Yes, crave it until you try it. Look at that.
02:00 And you know what is so crazy is some people in studio today were saying this food doesn't even look real.
02:05 That's how gorgeous this food looks. But it is real, folks.
02:08 It is. And this is so I have a question. Where's the Sicilian baker?
02:12 Is it right next to it? I think they're attached. Is it attached to it?
02:15 Yeah, because it's over there in Scottsdale and they have the Sicilian butcher and then the bakery is right next to it.
02:20 You can walk in and grab those cannolis, grab those Italian colored cookies.
02:25 Don't forget the cannolis. Don't forget the cannolis.
02:28 Don't forget the cannolis. Leave the gun.
02:30 Tangerine green light. Yeah. They have a couple of those.
02:32 Yeah, so we're going to be checking them out. So pretty cool.
02:34 All right, let's do some Trendy brought to you by Gerber and Dulau.
02:37 Where we travel the Internet, the social media websites, our own backyard to give you something to talk about.
02:40 And the big talk here in Arizona is, of course, the NCAA playoffs.
02:47 Yeah. Where two of our colleges have made it into the first is University of Arizona.
02:51 Wildcats have made it into the playoffs.
02:56 They play Long Beach State on Thursday for the first game.
03:00 Love it. And they've been to, of course, the finals before.
03:03 So they're hoping maybe this year they'll get there a little further than they have in the past.
03:07 But this one's really great. Grand Canyon University, GCU, is heading to the NCAA playoffs.
03:13 Their first game is against St. Mary's this Friday.
03:17 And we are going to be hosting the final four here in Arizona.
03:21 Big deal. Very cool. But great two of them.
03:24 So we're going to be, of course, giving you updates and tell you about those games and hope they make it.
03:28 But GCU, we're very excited for them to make it. Yeah, congrats to them. That's awesome.
03:31 Very, very cool. Nice.
03:33 So we're demonstrating the NCAA playoffs are starting.
03:37 So you've got to put your bets in, get your brackets.
03:40 Are we allowed under new management to bet now on brackets?
03:44 Does anyone want to check that out? See if it's in the bylaws?
03:47 See if anybody there? No?
03:49 Oh, they don't let us bet on stuff?
03:51 I don't know. Actually, there's some companies that don't let you bet anymore.
03:54 Oh, I don't know about that.
03:56 I don't know. There's some companies that won't. That's interesting.
03:58 You ever hear about that? No. I don't know if that's true.
04:01 All right. We'll look up and see if we can. But there you go.
04:04 We'll make a bracket. All right. Yeah.
04:06 If you're a player or a coach, that would make sense.
04:10 I don't think if you work for a company.
04:12 Like the company can't bet inside the company.
04:14 You can't bet in the company. Well, inside of the company walls, you can't do like a company.
04:18 Right. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:19 Oh, well, sure, sure.
04:20 Like the brackets and stuff where you put down a dollar or a square or something like that.
04:23 I don't know if we're allowed to. Are we?
04:25 I think you are outside of the company walls.
04:27 Oh, yeah, outside of the walls. Please, I'll bet on the store.
04:28 You can go do whatever you want.
04:29 I'm a draft king like there's no tomorrow.
04:31 Well, then there you go. Well, then I don't know.
04:33 Does draft kings have a GCU on there? Do they?
04:36 Yeah, they got everybody. There you go.
04:37 But no, I just thought inside our building that we usually like to bet.
04:40 So we'll see.
04:41 OK. Yesterday was St. Patty's Day.
04:43 That it was.
04:44 And so everybody did their little tradition.
04:45 What was yours yesterday?
04:46 Well, we went over to some friends house who made dinner for us.
04:50 And we thought it was going to be a traditional, you know, corned beef and cabbage, the whole lot.
04:55 But actually, you know, I'm Italian and they're Italian as well.
04:59 So instead, they did a traditional Italian dinner for us.
05:02 So they did all of the great risotto.
05:05 They had the chicken, the Tuscan chicken, homemade bread, which was delicious.
05:10 And then he did finish it up with some homemade cannoli.
05:13 How many of you were there? Just the four of you?
05:15 It was the five of us. Arlo was there.
05:16 Arlo was there, too?
05:17 Arlo counts.
05:18 So did you guys do all like the different, like, starting with like a little dish and then build up and everything?
05:25 We didn't do quite that. We didn't do quite that Italian.
05:28 OK.
05:29 No, no, no, no, no, no.
05:30 But I thought we were going for, you know, the traditional corned beef and cabbage.
05:34 I mean, but I hear that's what you had, in a sense.
05:36 I just had cabbage. So that was it.
05:38 There you go.
05:39 And I took a picture, sent it to my nutritionist, and was like, "Look how good I am."
05:44 You're so good, Brad.
05:45 But I didn't show him the other hand, and that was a little bit of adult beverage.
05:50 You've got to get in your enjoyment where you can.
05:55 But I didn't put any dye in it, so it wasn't green. So that was, you know, the lucky part right there.
06:00 All right. Nice.
06:01 There it is.
06:02 Sounds good.
06:03 Hey, all right, let's get the roller coaster show going here.
06:05 Coming up, we are getting some easy DIY art tips to help spruce up your space when the mix returns.
06:12 So come on back.
06:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:28 Finding time and money to spruce up your space can be difficult.
06:32 So we brought in artist extraordinaire Laura Madden with some DIY art tips.
06:38 So Laura, I love when you are here because your stuff is beautiful, and I am a huge fan of your art.
06:43 I have one of your pieces. I say that every time you're here.
06:45 I love it.
06:46 But it's just because I love it so much.
06:47 And you do such cool and unique things.
06:50 So before we get into these DIY activities and things you can do, tell us a little bit about you and your work.
06:56 Yeah.
06:57 So everything is really meant to be a merging of style and sustainability.
07:00 So I really love very stylish, avant-garde, unusual things.
07:04 But I really focus on using items that would otherwise end up in landfill.
07:09 So essentially repurposing.
07:11 And it's good for the earth, but also leads to an incredible aesthetic for your walls.
07:17 Definitely.
07:18 So that is a great thing that you do.
07:20 You're saving our earth.
07:22 You're getting these pieces that otherwise would be in the trash, and you're giving them new life.
07:25 So this is really cool.
07:26 So tell me about some of the materials before we get into actually making a piece of art.
07:31 Tell me about some of the materials we have on the table for people who are at home and are like, "I want to start doing my own stuff at home."
07:37 Like, what do we have here?
07:38 Yes.
07:39 Well, I really encourage people, if you cannot afford art, please make it yourself.
07:42 It feels so good.
07:43 And a lot of these things we have at home.
07:45 So these are -- this was a slipcover to a couch that is no longer working.
07:50 Okay.
07:51 So a number of these pieces were pulled.
07:53 These fabric remnants were pulled from this slipcover.
07:56 That's a huge amount of material.
07:58 Could end up in landfill.
07:59 You can use it to create texture in this great 3-D effect.
08:03 This is also a pillow cover.
08:06 Again, tons of fabric.
08:08 Instead of just throwing it in the trash, you can cut it up.
08:11 You can use -- I mean, all kinds of cool things.
08:14 Some of them we see here.
08:15 Some of them we might do here.
08:16 We also have this Styrofoam.
08:18 I mean, every other package.
08:20 What a great idea.
08:21 Like you were just saying, everything now -- and, you know, I'm guilty of this.
08:24 I order so much on Amazon.
08:26 And then, unfortunately, I do just toss everything.
08:28 Look, this, you can make something beautiful, and you're giving it second life.
08:32 Yes.
08:33 Great.
08:34 So we've got the fabric here.
08:35 This was totally inspired by Baby Arlo.
08:36 Yay.
08:37 Just something cool and unique.
08:38 Absolutely.
08:39 Denim, awesome way to create texture.
08:42 And also you can do some really cool things on a canvas.
08:44 I never would have thought of that.
08:46 That's so great.
08:47 Yes.
08:48 Very neat things.
08:49 So I think we covered most of these materials.
08:51 But what I really want to focus on is the material.
08:53 Okay.
08:54 Because there's so much textile waste, and we have so many leftover textiles.
08:57 Definitely.
08:58 You know, in our home.
08:59 Yeah, absolutely.
09:00 So this is one of my favorite things to do.
09:02 It's a great way to create texture, to create 3-D.
09:05 We have some artwork here that was also created using the fabrics.
09:10 But if you want to do a little demo for your viewers --
09:14 Yes, absolutely, please.
09:15 Totally up to you.
09:17 We're going to keep this very, very light and easy.
09:20 Okay, yes.
09:21 I'm not super artistic myself when it comes to this kind of stuff.
09:25 We have some supplies.
09:27 So what we have here, this is actually house paint.
09:30 Like paint that you would use to paint your house?
09:32 Yes, paint that you would use in your house, leftover from a renovation.
09:36 That's great.
09:37 Yeah, when it starts to dry up, it really works very well as a texturizer as well as a paste.
09:44 So that's what we're going to use to kind of, like, secure, to glue down these textiles onto the canvas.
09:52 All right, let's get going here.
09:53 Show me how to do this.
09:54 So we can use something as simple as this.
09:55 And you know what?
09:56 Actually, let's use this.
09:57 Also a leftover kitchen tool.
09:59 Okay, so we have something like this, and I'm just going to take this dried, like, paint that's starting to dry.
10:04 Exactly.
10:05 Put it on the back of my fabric here.
10:07 Nice and thick.
10:08 Okay.
10:09 Sorry if you guys can't see this.
10:10 I'll show you here in a second.
10:11 It has a little bit of a glue-like effect.
10:13 Gotcha.
10:14 Okay, and this is all stuff, again --
10:16 You're doing wonderful, Lexi.
10:17 -- that people have in their home.
10:19 You're so hired.
10:20 Yes.
10:21 Guys, I'm an artist.
10:22 Okay, last little bit here, and then I'm just going to stick it to my canvas.
10:26 Absolutely, absolutely.
10:27 So we can turn it over and place it down.
10:32 All right, so there we go.
10:33 And don't worry about any paint that might be, you know, smudging.
10:36 Yeah, that's all kind of part of, you know --
10:38 We're going to paint over it.
10:39 Oh, great.
10:40 Yes, so we paint over that.
10:41 So there we go, and this is just a piece of fabric, like we said, on a canvas.
10:44 Exactly, exactly.
10:45 What am I going to do next?
10:46 So we've got black paint, our favorite color, right?
10:48 Definitely.
10:49 And so paint over it.
10:51 We've also got other colors.
10:52 You can do any type of, you know, design, any type of pattern.
10:56 And what type of paint are we using here?
10:57 Is this acrylic?
10:58 This is -- Well, it's latex.
10:59 Oh, latex.
11:00 Oh.
11:01 Which is -- It is a water-based paint, so it washes off, which is great.
11:04 But, again, this is leftover from a home renovation.
11:06 So we've all got leftover paint --
11:08 Oh, so great.
11:09 -- from something or another, so don't throw it away.
11:11 And, Laura, so if you're at home right now, spring break is coming up, and you have kids.
11:15 Yes, yes.
11:16 And you're like, "Okay, I am trying to keep my kids kind of, you know, busy."
11:20 Yes.
11:21 Would this be something good to do with the kids at home?
11:22 Absolutely, absolutely.
11:23 Keep their hands active, keep their minds active.
11:25 I love it.
11:26 Kind of stretch their creative edge.
11:27 Yes.
11:28 And, you know, let them see what they can come up with on their own.
11:30 Okay, great.
11:31 I mean, you know, I like letters and numbers because it's easy and it's fun.
11:34 Absolutely.
11:35 And, you know, you have something like this.
11:37 Like, my son's name is Arlo, and now we have this A that's kind of cool and fun.
11:40 He has his own art, yes.
11:41 And if he did this himself, that would be so great.
11:43 Yes.
11:44 All right, Laura, tell everybody where they can find more information about you.
11:45 My website is shop.iamlauramadden.com.
11:47 Nice.
11:48 Instagram is @refashionedart.
11:50 And, you guys, I just made a piece of art.
11:52 This is amazing.
11:53 This is amazing.
11:54 You can do it, too.
11:55 You can do it, too.
11:56 I love it.
11:57 All right, coming up, find out how the Guardian Games is making a huge impact, not just on
12:00 the athletes, but on everyone involved.
12:02 And look at this.
12:04 Look at this.
12:05 The sixth annual Guardian Games is coming up March 22nd at Westgate.
12:26 And Dave from Sanderson Ford and Detective Oliver is here with us to talk about how important
12:31 this is to our community and the law enforcement community.
12:34 And, Dave, again, this is such a great thing that we do here in the community for our Special
12:39 Olympic Committee community.
12:41 And you, especially, with Sanderson Ford, are a big supporter of this.
12:44 Well, we are privileged to be part of the law enforcement torch run.
12:49 And the Guardian Games is the guardian of that torch.
12:53 So we can get what we do maybe lights that keeps that light lit just a little brighter.
12:58 I hope so.
12:59 Yeah.
13:00 And we are just privileged to be part of anything with law enforcement in Arizona.
13:05 And this event is a fundraiser.
13:06 And we were talking numbers last time about what is raised here and stays in Arizona,
13:12 which is quite a bit, isn't it?
13:14 You know, it's about a million dollars a year that the law enforcement torch run raises.
13:20 And we're going for $100,000, which we have hit before.
13:23 And so this is a really big deal.
13:26 And I'm just saying that this just humanizes the law enforcement people.
13:31 They're out there mixing it up with these Special Olympians and a few business people.
13:35 And it's just an amazing event.
13:37 They need to -- if you can't participate, come see it.
13:40 Yeah.
13:41 Detective Oliver, we talk about our law enforcement.
13:44 We know that you are the front people for emergencies, for things around our community.
13:48 But this here is a day you all step back and let the Special Olympians be the front of the community,
13:54 which is so great to -- you guys participate in it, isn't it?
13:57 Yeah.
13:58 It is an amazing opportunity.
14:00 It's an opportunity that we're provided to really spend some really amazing time,
14:06 positive time with community members, watch the athletes really go out and give it their best,
14:11 like truly just give it all they have.
14:14 And it is a moment that truly fills your cup.
14:16 And like you said, you've got to come out and see this.
14:19 You really do.
14:20 It's -- for us, having that cup filled, that can just be a reset for your year.
14:25 Yeah.
14:26 And even the torch run of seeing the different actually police communities come together.
14:30 We have Scottsdale, Glendale, Phoenix, gosh, Mesa, all over the Valley,
14:36 all coming together for this event and the torch run, which is so great.
14:40 And I also love, too, is that sometimes you have to turn some of the officers away
14:45 because there's so many of them want to be a part of this.
14:48 Yeah.
14:49 And we were told that, too.
14:50 It's like there's only a certain amount of members that are allowed because of that.
14:53 So they're still able to come over and support, though they just can't participate with the athletes,
14:58 which is great because there's other things that need to be done.
15:01 And, Dave, that's what we do see on this day.
15:03 On that Friday, we see officers, firefighters, community service people who come out to support,
15:10 and that's what we want the community to do.
15:12 If you cannot participate, you still come out and support all these athletes,
15:15 cheer them on as they go through these fun games that we play.
15:19 But it's a way to raise money for the Olympics, and that's what we want people to go out and do.
15:22 Absolutely.
15:23 For $100, you can be put on a team, and it's a life-changing experience.
15:28 I've never seen such enthusiasm from these young people and the officers.
15:33 I mean, they come out to play.
15:36 Yeah.
15:37 So, anyway.
15:38 They are.
15:39 There's different little activities that they do.
15:41 For Elise, the fun part, I think, is the basketball, the hockey, all kinds of things, the family feud that we play.
15:49 But then there's the serious stuff like, of course, the law enforcement's dressing up
15:53 and the firefighters competing and stuff like that, which is really fun, too, to watch everyone do.
15:58 Exactly.
15:59 Nowhere in Arizona can you see what goes on but at the Guardian Games
16:04 because it's a conglomeration of exciting things with people that care.
16:09 Yeah, and again, it's those athletes there who are participating
16:14 because it's a way to bring them together in the community, too, which is great
16:17 because we know with COVID, they didn't get a chance to play it for two years.
16:21 Now it's been back for a couple years, and again, it's important for them to show how much love is given for them
16:26 to be able to participate and be in the community.
16:29 Exactly.
16:30 It's such a big part of life, and when you take that away,
16:33 and so we're really glad that this year is really extra special
16:36 because it's going to be the most exciting Guardian Games ever.
16:41 Yeah, it is.
16:42 It's out at Westgate.
16:43 It's March 22nd.
16:44 Information's right there on the screen, how you can participate or come and support,
16:47 which is really nice for everybody to do.
16:50 And, Detective, I don't want to get anybody in trouble.
16:53 I don't want to do anything like that, but what police department do you think might do a pretty good job this year?
16:59 I'm going to go with Scott Still.
17:00 Oh, okay.
17:01 I am.
17:02 All right.
17:03 I don't want to start anything.
17:04 Yeah, no.
17:05 You know what?
17:06 I think go big or go home, and nobody wants to go home.
17:09 There it is.
17:10 You know, when you're at those games, you're going to go big.
17:12 So Scott Still's going to bring it for sure.
17:14 There it is.
17:15 Dave, that's the love of all things.
17:16 Thank you very much, both, for being here.
17:17 And again, if you want to be a part of the Guardian Games,
17:20 just head over to the website right there on the screen.
17:23 So, all right, thank you.
17:24 Thank you, too.
17:25 Thank you.
17:26 [music]
17:31 All right, coming up, we've got some fun spring trip ideas for both you and the kids
17:36 when the Arizona Daily Mix returns after this.
17:40 [music]
17:47 This is the Arizona Daily Mix.
17:50 [music]
17:55 All right, welcome to the second half of the Arizona Daily Mix.
17:58 I don't know about you, but I love my coffee in the morning.
18:02 And later in the show, we have some recipes to help spruce up your morning joe.
18:08 Ooh, yes.
18:10 And springtime means new tech and tech expert Jennifer Jolly
18:15 has given us an inside look at the new gadgets to look out for this year.
18:19 Yes, that's great.
18:20 And one is a grill.
18:21 Oh, a tech grill.
18:23 Yes.
18:24 And I also had to display my art here, ladies and gentlemen,
18:26 because I am an artist.
18:28 Courtesy of Laura Madden, thank you for your instruction.
18:31 When will your showing be?
18:32 Oh, well, right now.
18:34 Here we go, everyone, ladies and gentlemen.
18:36 There it is.
18:37 There it is, beautiful.
18:38 Beautiful.
18:39 Debut showing.
18:40 But you know what else is showing is a great lineup here on the CW7.
18:45 So grab your seat on the couch and enjoy some laughs with us today,
18:49 starting this afternoon with two hours of your favorite funny man, Steve Harvey,
18:53 and Family Feud at 4, followed by the Big Bang Theory,
18:56 bringing on the laughs at 6 and 630.
18:58 Then we follow that up with two new exciting shows to the CW7,
19:01 which is Ride at 7, and then Wild Cards at 8.
19:05 You don't want to miss them.
19:06 It's Your Favorite Funny Man Again at 9,
19:08 and Hang in There for the craziest sitcom on TV, Mom at 10.
19:12 It's all about the smiles here at CW7.
19:14 As we like to say, it's all good.
19:18 I like it.
19:19 I want to throw a shout out to Steve Wilkos.
19:22 Happy birthday.
19:23 He's actually in Sedona, so if you see him walk around there, hi, Steve.
19:26 I'm glad he's watching us.
19:28 Rub the head.
19:29 Yes, so catch you.
19:31 All right.
19:32 The first day of spring is right around the corner,
19:34 and last week I talked with Kelly and Mei Ling from the Family Entourage
19:37 about some ways to spring into action.
19:42 Good morning, Mei and Kelly.
19:44 How are you?
19:45 Doing great.
19:47 So I love this, ladies.
19:48 It's that time of year to start thinking about planning your trips over to the San Diego area,
19:54 and you've got some great tips for us, but before we start,
19:57 let's talk about where you two are standing right now because it looks beautiful.
20:02 So we are at the Kisara in Carlsbad, overlooking the beautiful flower fields
20:07 and just steps away from the ocean back there.
20:09 So, you know, we're going to spring into action, Brad,
20:12 and we are right in season for the spring for the ranunculas,
20:16 and they're getting in bloom at the flower fields,
20:18 and what better thing to do, whether it's spring break or a weekend getaway,
20:22 to just get out and stop and smell the flowers.
20:26 And so there's 50 acres at the flower fields full of ranunculas, orchids, roses,
20:33 beautiful flowers in bloom.
20:35 Our kids love taking those open-air wagons that you can see in the background
20:39 and going and checking them all out.
20:42 We as moms, we love stopping and taking pictures of them in the flower fields,
20:47 and, you know, we also love bringing the grandparents out to the flower fields too
20:50 because as much as everyone loves to think they have a green thumb,
20:54 when you see the flower fields in action, you are just blown away and mesmerized by all of that.
20:59 And what's fun too is, you know, there's all these different things going on.
21:01 They have music days, they have picnics, so many fun things to do.
21:06 Yeah, you know, it's so funny.
21:08 I'll just go really quick. So funny is that, you know, people drive past
21:12 and not realize that they can actually go and check it out.
21:15 Right? There's, you know, there's one of the things when you're driving by,
21:18 there's that beautiful American flag that's all made out of flowers,
21:21 and I love always taking that in, but yes, you can definitely stop by.
21:24 And if you want to make a weekend trip of it, the car,
21:27 Kasara at Carlsbad has a flower fields package where you get flower-inspired chocolates
21:33 and flower-inspired drinks, so it's fun to make a weekend of it.
21:37 I know we're going to see that flower drink in just a little bit, which is kind of cool.
21:40 So, all right, let's talk about, of course, Dino Valley.
21:44 What is this? I actually don't know about this one.
21:47 Okay, so, you know, we're just a walk away from Legoland,
21:52 and it's always a huge hit for families over the summer when you're vacationing,
21:57 or really year-round, but what's neat is they're always being innovative,
22:01 and now they're bringing us a new Dino Valley.
22:04 It comes March 22nd, and there's going to be, you know, three rides within that,
22:09 an area where families can dig for fossils, and, you know, it was really fun, Brad.
22:13 We love Legoland because, you know, just seeing the huge Legos put together,
22:19 but they actually had to crane in the dinosaurs that are part of this land,
22:24 because as you can imagine, we've got an 11-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex
22:27 that you're going to see on one of those rides,
22:29 so it was really quite a sight to see them, you know, airlift in these dinosaurs
22:33 to create this whole village, but then what they also did is they decided,
22:37 "Hey, let's break a world record," and so they got everyone to show up in Dino costumes.
22:44 When our boys heard that Legoland did that, of course they had to join in on the action.
22:50 [laughter]
22:52 So, they were like, "That's it. We're getting in our Dino suit.
22:55 We're headed down to the park. If that doesn't scream we are ready for Dino Valley
22:59 to come on March 22nd, I don't know what does."
23:02 That is so great, getting the kids involved.
23:05 "I want a Dino suit."
23:08 Yeah, they're little Dino suits. Wait, they're little T-Rex arms.
23:11 No, it's so fun.
23:13 I love it.
23:14 But what's super cool too, Brad, is that, you know, since we're at the Kisara,
23:18 you can walk to Legoland, you can see the flower fields,
23:21 but they've really done such a great job making this really family-centric.
23:25 So, they have these family suites that are two bedrooms,
23:28 because you know when you go on vacation with kids, you all have one bedtime.
23:32 It's either 7 o'clock or like 10.30, because when the lights go out, that's when everyone goes out.
23:37 So, we love the idea of having this suite where the kids can go to bed, you can,
23:42 and then there's tons of activities on the property.
23:44 They have an amazing splash pad, ping pong activities where you can do arts and crafts,
23:50 and they've just really tried to make it a retreat for families.
23:54 And so, the Kisara Carlsbad is definitely the place to go in order to, you know,
23:59 enjoy the flower field, Legoland, and then just get some time with the coast.
24:03 They've got a shuttle that will take you, we've got seven miles of beach just in Carlsbad alone,
24:08 and it's going to be a lot less crowded than some of those other beaches, you know, in San Diego proper.
24:13 I love this. This is such a great way to recharge our batteries and have fun with the family
24:18 and get over to, of course, a cooler spot, especially during our spring break and summertime going on.
24:24 I see they brought the drinks in there, and those are the flower drinks that you ladies have?
24:29 These are the Flower Power Sours.
24:32 Ooh, I like that. That's something to recharge all the way right there, which is great.
24:36 Yes, yes.
24:37 Ladies, this is so cool. Where can we find more information about, of course,
24:40 the flower fields and recharging our batteries at the resort?
24:43 Absolutely. You can head to familyentourage.com. We've got you covered.
24:48 Perfect. Ladies, thank you very much for joining us. And dinosaurs, you look cute.
24:54 [laughter]
24:56 T-Rex arms get me every time.
24:58 [music]
25:01 All right, coming up, we are getting a taste of the Sicilian Butcher's new menu when The Mix returns.
25:07 [music]
25:19 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored by the Sicilian Butcher.
25:25 Spring is in the valley, and that means the new menu for the Sicilian Butcher is here.
25:29 Tell us all about it. Of course, it's Chef Omar.
25:33 And Chef, I will say we had to start on the cannolis. Can't forget the cannolis.
25:37 We can't. We definitely can't.
25:39 But we're going to hold off on those. We're going to go back and talk about those,
25:42 because we want to talk about the spring menu first.
25:44 And this was launched last week, and you're excited about it, aren't you?
25:47 Yeah, so we launched it last week. It's an array of new entree dishes, pasta dishes, everything, including the dessert.
25:55 So we have a baked gnocchi on the menu that's baked in the cast iron, so you get all the cheesiness from it.
26:00 Oh, my gosh.
26:01 Our steak, it's grilled. It's traditionally just breaded, a little balsamic.
26:07 We finish with a little olive oil on capers.
26:09 Our Hanley fresh-stretched pizza. Then we have a pork milanesa.
26:13 And so, yeah, we have definitely a fit for everyone.
26:16 I love this. And let me just make sure people understand this.
26:19 This isn't TV food. This is actually what you get in the restaurant.
26:23 Absolutely.
26:24 You guys make sure that they are fed like an Italian.
26:27 Absolutely. We have plenty to go around, freshly made.
26:31 We definitely pride ourselves in what we do and how we do it.
26:34 I like that.
26:35 Before we get to dessert, you got a little demonstration here, because this is something else that's important on the menu.
26:38 Yeah, so this is more seasonally.
26:40 We have a prosciutto melone, a traditional take on the prosciutto and melon salad that everyone makes.
26:47 So this here is a straticella, which is a whipped burrata, a burrata cheese, freshly sliced prosciutto.
26:55 Then we have our cantaloupe and honeydew.
26:58 We macerate these in a little simple syrup with basil and mint.
27:03 So we get that spring/summer flavor.
27:06 Look at that.
27:07 A little sweet. Then we finish it with a little, obviously, a good olive oil.
27:11 Ah, melting in the mouth right there.
27:15 Yeah, absolutely.
27:16 Oh my gosh.
27:17 Very seasonal, very fresh.
27:19 So we definitely try and pride ourselves into seasonality, you know, a chef-driven concept.
27:24 Joey and the familia have been there forever, so they do it right.
27:28 Chef Joey knows, the whole family all knows how to make something really amazing.
27:31 Absolutely.
27:32 Now this is interesting. I didn't know that there was a little bakery there.
27:34 Yeah, yeah.
27:35 And this is where all the food comes from.
27:37 Yeah, they're all attached. The bakery is attached.
27:39 So we have a bar for you can build your own cannolis, different flavors.
27:43 We go with the seasonal flavors as well.
27:45 Then we have, tomorrow is St. Joseph's Day tomorrow.
27:50 So we have a zeppole which filled in with a little bit of pastry cream.
27:54 And that's the little ones right here.
27:56 Yeah, that's the one behind it.
27:57 Right here?
27:58 Yeah. And then this is our green tart. That's just a little mini version of it.
28:01 So it's a baked ricotta and you can get all this stuff at the bakery.
28:05 Array of cookies, seasonality, freshness, coffee, what you will.
28:09 Everything you got right there.
28:10 Absolutely.
28:11 It's so delicious for everybody to enjoy.
28:12 Okay, this is very important people.
28:14 Pay attention because you're going to have a chance to enjoy a great wine pairing food and everything with you and Chef Joey.
28:21 Yes.
28:22 First one's coming up on March 28th, right?
28:23 Yes, we have March 28th. It's a five course meal Joey and I will be hosting.
28:27 We have wine pairings to go with it.
28:30 So our first one's March 28th.
28:32 Our second one is April 18th.
28:34 And you can link into the bio for more information.
28:37 So please join us.
28:38 Yeah. And one is that let's make sure March 28th is at the Tatum location.
28:42 Correct, the Phoenix location. Yes.
28:43 And then April is over in Chandler.
28:45 In Chandler, correct.
28:46 And then you guys have another third location in Peoria.
28:48 And Peoria is our third location.
28:49 We just haven't designated the date and time for that one.
28:52 Yeah.
28:53 And this is what's really great.
28:54 And I tell you, if Chef Joey's there, be ready to eat and be ready to eat things that he will bring out and then bring out extra stuff.
29:01 You guys do that. You guys actually bring out extra food.
29:03 Yeah, we have to.
29:04 To make sure everybody enjoys it.
29:05 It's just the way you get to enjoy it.
29:06 I know. I love it.
29:07 You guys test things on people and that's what's so great about it.
29:09 It's family affair.
29:10 Yes, absolutely.
29:11 That's the whole thing about it.
29:12 I love it.
29:13 Well, this is all available.
29:14 The menu's ready to go and ready for the whole family to come enjoy.
29:17 Do you have any reservations to stop into the Sicilian Butcher?
29:19 We do offer them now.
29:21 But if you just choose to walk in, we do definitely have a lot of space, the bar space, happy hour, the patio.
29:26 So, yes.
29:27 All ready to go.
29:28 Yeah.
29:29 Chef Omar, thank you.
29:30 Thank you.
29:31 Can we keep this?
29:32 Absolutely, you can.
29:33 Or we're going to.
29:34 Don't forget, if you want more information about Sicilian Butcher and, of course, the wine tasting, information's right there on the screen.
29:39 Or head over to azdailymix.com.
29:42 All right.
29:43 After the break, Jennifer Jolly is demoing the latest and greatest new tech items coming out this spring.
29:49 Come on down.
29:50 [music]
30:03 The preceding portion of the Arizona Daily Mix was sponsored by the Sicilian Butcher.
30:07 [music]
30:14 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored on behalf of Tech-ish by Gorbitz Communications.
30:19 [music]
30:21 Spring is in the air, and that means it's time for barbecues, pool parties, and even a little madness.
30:27 Last week, Brad talked with tech expert and columnist Jennifer Jolly about all the latest and greatest connected gadgets for spring.
30:34 [music]
30:36 Good morning, Ms. Jennifer Jolly.
30:39 How are you doing?
30:41 I am doing so well because check out the daffodils.
30:44 Wait, they're on this side.
30:45 Check out these beautiful flowers.
30:47 Spring has finally sprung.
30:49 It is.
30:50 And that means we are looking at new tech ideas, new tech items that we would love to have to make sure our spring is springing.
31:00 So, let's start.
31:01 What do you have for us?
31:04 Well, I hate to do this to you, but let's start on a little bit of a serious note first.
31:08 You know, March is Fraud Prevention Month, and most people have no clue that your very first line of defense is often your very own credit card.
31:17 This is my card.
31:18 It's a World MasterCard.
31:20 I also have the World Elite MasterCard down here.
31:23 Zero liability on anything that you buy with these, whether it's in the store, over the phone, online, via your mobile device, even ATM transactions.
31:33 So, my parents, like people who actually tend to be targeted for these things, they have no idea that when you buy with your MasterCard, you get McAfee protection, Avid McAfee total protection, ID theft protection.
31:47 It makes this a no-brainer.
31:50 So, got to start there with some common sense safety.
31:53 I like it.
31:54 Okay.
31:55 The big game of college basketball is coming up, so people are going to want to watch it on a big screen.
32:02 Yeah, that's right.
32:03 For March Madness and all that basketball fever on the big screen, the real madness would be not to get in on the LG OLED Evo G3 deal that's about to happen.
32:14 This is the set that CNET calls the best performing TV they have ever reviewed.
32:20 It is also coming up on its lowest price point ever, up to 30% off.
32:26 You'll find that on LG's website starting March 18th.
32:30 This is the best high-end set at a super reasonable price, stunning picture quality, improved brightness, high contrast even in well-lit rooms, plus best-in-class gaming, sleek styling, reinstallation.
32:43 All of these things can make you the real championship winner, not just of March Madness, but sort of of your whole life, you know?
32:51 Your whole household at least.
32:53 I like it.
32:55 Okay.
32:56 Let's head outside because the weather's getting nice and we want to do some grilling.
33:00 I hear you got something special for us.
33:02 Yeah, this.
33:04 This right here, another real superstar, the Current Electric Grill.
33:09 This I first showed you at CES this year, and this serves up a huge bunch of connectivity in your backyard.
33:16 You just flip a switch.
33:18 You heat it up.
33:19 Then you go back to your party and enjoy your day because you control the cook from an app on your smartphone.
33:25 It's easier, safer.
33:26 There are no open flames.
33:27 It's not as smoky, but you still get all of that incredible traditional barbecue flavor.
33:33 It even tells you how to get everything cooking just right.
33:36 Fully guided cook instructions.
33:39 You can go to their website and use Jolly, my last name, J-O-L-L-Y 15, and you get 15% off.
33:47 Cheers to that moment right there.
33:49 Is there a timer on this or a clock you can set?
33:52 So if I wanted to set something and then just go somewhere and it's ready to go for me?
33:57 All of that.
33:58 Yep, and you'll get notifications right on your smartphone through that app.
34:02 It just basically does everything for you.
34:05 I like it.
34:06 I like it.
34:07 Okay, let's talk daylight saving times and our kids who probably right now are having a tough time.
34:11 Even though we don't change our clocks, the sun's coming up.
34:15 Yeah, that's right.
34:17 Most of the country lost an hour of sleep, and let's face it, as a parent, we're just pretty much always sleep deprived.
34:23 So here is my secret weapon for exhausted families everywhere.
34:27 VTech's family of sleep training soothers combines a colorful touch nightlight, a glow on the ceiling projector, and a powerful Bluetooth speaker.
34:36 So parents can craft that just right sleepy time atmosphere.
34:40 You can use the pre-programmed stories, on board classical music.
34:44 I love that.
34:45 Please, please go to sleep.
34:48 Natural sounds.
34:49 You can also stream your own music, even record your own bedtime stories or songs from VTech's free app too.
34:57 This is my go-to.
34:58 I give this at all the baby showers out there.
35:01 I even travel with the little one right here.
35:03 It is truly my secret weapon when it comes to getting kids to go to sleep.
35:11 I might get that one just for me to make me go to sleep.
35:14 All right, last one.
35:15 What do you have for us?
35:17 Okay, you know how I save the best for last a lot of times.
35:21 Let's end with a giant splash and dive right into the future with the BeatBot AquaSense Pro, this five-in-one cool cleaning robot.
35:29 This is another one of those gadgets that made major waves at CES this year.
35:34 It has a ton of firsts, nine motors, 20 sensors, on-board AI.
35:38 It scrubs the pool floors, climbs and scours the walls, skims and cleans the surface, sucking up leaves, bugs, cosmetics, sunscreen residue, all of it.
35:48 It even includes a built-in water clarifier system so that you can get that crystal clear pool water without lifting a finger.
35:55 And, you know, in Phoenix and beyond, if you're one of those 10.5 million people with that backyard swimming pool,
36:02 life should be in 2024 all about your gadgets doing all of the work for you.
36:08 I mean, it's about time the robot army came in to start cleaning up after us.
36:14 Am I right?
36:15 I like it.
36:16 I do.
36:17 Oh, man.
36:18 Jennifer, this is all awesome stuff.
36:20 Where can we find more information?
36:22 As always, go straight to my website, techish, T-E-C-H-I-S-H.com.
36:28 You can get great bargains on all kinds of the very best gadgets around.
36:33 Perfect.
36:34 Jennifer, Jolly, thanks for joining us this morning.
36:37 Thank you, and happy spring.
36:40 [MUSIC]
36:42 Coming up, find out how you can get in your daily nutrients with a cup of coffee when The Mix returns.
36:49 [MUSIC]
36:53 The preceding portion of the Arizona Daily Mix was sponsored on behalf of Techish by Gorbitz Communications.
36:59 [MUSIC]
37:04 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored by Simply Divine Nutrition, LLC.
37:11 March is National Caffeine Awareness Month, and last week I talked with registered dietitian Brooke Barr about how Purity Coffee is giving you the right amount of caffeine for your health.
37:22 [MUSIC]
37:24 Good morning, Brooke. How you doing?
37:27 I'm good. How are you?
37:29 Well, I think we're all up and at 'em, ready to go, because, again, we all have our morning cup of coffee.
37:35 But let's talk about how important coffee is to our health.
37:41 Yes. Well, thanks for having me again.
37:44 So, yeah, when people think coffee, they automatically think caffeine, which is great.
37:51 Coffee is also a great source of antioxidants and has been proven to reduce inflammation and protect against chronic disease.
38:01 However, some individuals may have to limit their caffeine intake due to certain health conditions, which is why I'm here with Purity Coffee.
38:12 And I am promoting their Balance Blend, which is great for those who want to keep coffee into their daily routine but maybe can't have as much caffeine.
38:22 Yeah, okay. You said something very important there, and that is the caffeine.
38:25 So, I mean, what is the safe consumption of our caffeine we should have daily?
38:31 Yeah, so that is a really great question.
38:34 So, per the FDA, 400 milligrams, which is about four to five cups of coffee per day, has been deemed safe.
38:43 But with Purity's Balance Blend, you can have three cups of coffee, which is actually going to have the same effect as one cup of coffee, but you're still getting three times the antioxidants.
38:54 I like that. And as we know, March is Caffeine Awareness Month, and that's where you really want people to start watching and doing it.
39:00 And is it like a diet supplement kind of thing? What I'm trying to think, when people have coffee with their diets, is that also helpful to have?
39:09 Yeah, so as long as it is deemed safe for you to have, like I said, that four or five cups a day is deemed safe, and so you can absolutely add that into your diet.
39:19 Actually, another reason I love this specific brand, Purity Coffee, is because all of their blends are actually lab tested to be free of molds, mycotoxins, and other unhealthy contaminants.
39:32 So, this blend is about as pure as you can get, hence the name Purity.
39:37 I like that. Okay, let's talk about having a cup of coffee and how I see you have a cold press there, I see you have the hot press.
39:44 So, what's the best way to enjoy the coffee?
39:47 Yeah, I'm just going to make a very simple latte here for you today.
39:52 So, as you can see, I already have my press here, that's done.
39:56 I blended up my coffee beans, put them in the bottom, and then I added hot water to it.
40:02 So, we are going to start by just pouring this in, just like that.
40:09 And then I have actually already pre-frothed my milk.
40:14 So, I just used a basic milk, I am a simple girl, so I keep my lattes very simple.
40:20 You can really use any creamer you want, but I just love to use this because it heats it and froths your milk so easily.
40:27 And then it makes a beautiful pour on top, just like that.
40:31 And then you can enjoy your glass of Purity Coffee with a little bit of milk and cream to make a wonderful latte.
40:40 I like that. I thought for sure you were going to make a little design in there for us.
40:44 If I was a coffee, I would.
40:48 Well, that's a great way to enjoy a course of coffee, especially during this time of month,
40:52 but always to make sure that you are doing it the right and healthy way. I love it.
40:56 So, my next question is, that's not the only coffee they have.
40:59 Don't they have other types of coffees people can get?
41:02 Yes, that is correct. So, I've been here promoting the Balance Blend,
41:06 which is a third caffeine for people that may need to watch their caffeine intake.
41:10 But as you can see here, they also have so many other incredible blends.
