Justin Wilcox talks about 2024 spring ball
Transcript
00:00 Both. Yeah, one player on each side of the ball.
00:03 Yeah, I don't know. Can you expand on that? What you're thinking about that?
00:12 I'm thinking they're gonna have coach to player communication just like they do
00:17 in the NFL. There's gonna be one guy that you can talk to on each side of
00:22 the ball and we'll practice it in spring and then we'll implement it again in
00:27 the fall. And so basically they soon as the previous play is finished, you have
00:33 the ability from for a coach to talk to a player all the way up until 15
00:38 seconds left on the on the play clock and or the ball is snapped. So it's
00:44 same rules and yeah, we're gonna be will work. We'll work on it during the
00:49 spring and into the fall and we'll use it during the games.
00:53 Anybody else with the first round question matter, thomas goes or carolyn
01:00 not right now. We'll go back to Jeff. Good, Jeff. Justin, what's the status of
01:07 Byron Cardwell in terms of his health? Is he a full go for spring? He's not
01:12 completely cleared, but he'll be, uh, he will be by the time we finished
01:16 spring ball. So the, uh, there's a number of guys that are gonna be
01:21 eased into spring ball, so to speak. Um, there'll be a handful of people
01:25 that are out. I can run through those now. Uh, the guys that are out for
01:29 spring football, Spencer, brian, Lou, hernes will be out for spring ball.
01:34 Tyler, uh, Jeremiah,
01:36 miles jernigan, curly thomas, fred williams, uh, BMW and Julian Womack.
01:46 Those guys will be out for spring ball. Everybody else will either be full go or
01:51 will be full go at some point during spring. And what do you expect from, uh,
01:55 from the new running back? Cadareus Calloway from Old Dominion. He had a
01:59 game, I guess last year we had like three runs over 60 yards. Yeah, he's
02:04 got again guy. He's got tools. We saw it on tape. He's done a good job since
02:08 he's been here and now it's time to put the pads on and, you know, get a
02:13 really good evaluation on the field. So it's like a lot of the guys on our
02:17 team. We, you know, we're excited to get them on the field. Some of the guys
02:21 we've worked with before, some we haven't as we know. And uh, we just
02:25 need everybody. I'm just looking forward to see who can improve the most.
02:29 You know, that's what we need to see. And again, it's gonna be our first
02:33 experience with with some of these guys, um, them getting a feel, but
02:37 they've done all those newcomers done a nice job this winter. And uh, and for
02:42 the returners, it's about taking the next step. So everybody's uh,
02:47 really, really eager to get on the field. I know the coaches are. I know
02:50 the players are one of the best days of the year is, you know, first day of
02:54 spring football. So it's uh, it'll be here real, real soon.
03:00 Can I ask you also about a couple of offensive linemen new to the program?
03:04 Victor Staffel and Rush is it Reimer? Yeah, Rush has been really good this
03:09 winter, added some size. He's played a lot of football. Uh, really again,
03:15 eager to get Rush out there and work with him. Victor is working through a
03:20 an injury, so we're hoping to get him cleared during spring football. Um, I
03:25 don't, I don't have any update yet. He's a, he's a good size. He's still a
03:30 little lean, but he's got good, good size frame. We just got to get him
03:35 healthy so we can, we can work with him. He's a tackle. Is Reimer a guard or a
03:41 tackle? Yeah, Rush can play, I think a number of different spots. So we'll see
03:44 how that sorts out. But Rush has got ability to play more than one position.
03:48 Thank you. Yeah. Okay, we'll go to Thomas then.
03:51 Good morning, Justin. When it comes to the linebacker battle alongside Katie
03:57 Uluwale, how do you foresee that battle coming together and what types of pieces
04:01 you'll be working with?
04:02 Uh, to be determined, you know, I think really everywhere. I mean, so many
04:10 places on the team. There's just how many reps can we get these guys?
04:13 You know, how much can they improve? There will still be new faces like at
04:19 that position, you know, we'll have some new faces joining us in June that will
04:26 impact that competition. But, you know, we're gonna get a lot of work this
04:32 spring with a number of those inside backers. And, uh, like I said before,
04:37 we're just we're looking for guys to improve and I want to see who improves
04:41 the most. And ultimately, we'll get as many good players as we can on the team
04:44 and let the competition sort out the depth chart. And then when we left off
04:49 at the end of season press conference last year, I asked about the
04:52 distribution of scholarships in relation to Jack Endres and Sean Grizzle.
04:55 I'm not sure to what extent you can answer this, but have there been any
04:59 changes along that front and or and or any updates? Yeah, both those guys have
05:03 been updated. You know, I don't like to share news for them, but we think highly
05:09 of them and and took the appropriate action regarding scholarships. So
05:14 thank you. Yep.
05:16 Can we go back to Jeff? Just another position. It looks like you have a
05:21 pretty good bunch of newcomers is D. B. Um, can you talk about who's who you
05:27 expect to jump up and and make an impact in the spring?
05:32 Well, let's see here. Uh,
05:34 uh,
05:36 well, Marcus Jair, Isaiah Crosby. Um, you know, three guys. Well, Marcus has
05:46 played college football before and as of this winter, he was the fastest guy
05:51 on the team. And a number of of the testing, uh, events we did. And so
06:01 Marcus has shown up offseason workouts. Same is, you know, Crosby as well. You
06:07 know, Jair is a talented kid. Uh, junior college transfer. I mean, all
06:12 three of those guys have have some tools. Uh, and again, like everybody,
06:17 we got to get out there on the field. And, um, I'm really eager to get those
06:22 guys in the drill work and in the team competition to let him play a little
06:27 bit. Are they pencil in at certain positions? Is Marcus a corner? Yeah,
06:32 Marcus, we're playing a corner. Um, I think Isaiah, we're gonna start him at
06:37 safety. Jair corner nickel. He has a good, uh, some good tools to play
06:43 nickel. But ultimately, again, we get in there, see how these guys fit. Uh,
06:48 I think all those guys have the ability to play more than one position, whether
06:54 it's corner and nickel, whether it's safety and nickel, uh, corner safety.
06:59 But, uh,
07:00 you know, we're gonna find the best group we can. And we have some again a
07:06 lot of competition in that defensive backfield. And I think those three guys
07:10 are certainly gonna be a factor.
