00:00 It's all good because it's that time of year we are looking to spruce up our yard or home
00:06 with plants and the Desert Botanical Garden is having their spring plant sale.
00:10 So let's head out live to the DBG and find out more about the sale with Kenny.
00:15 Good morning Kenny, how you doing?
00:19 I'm doing well.
00:20 How are you Brad?
00:21 Oh man, this is a great time because you know we see all these wonderful type of plants
00:25 throughout the Desert Botanical Garden and now we can get them in our own backyard or
00:29 house.
00:30 How many plants are out there?
00:32 Are you guys selling the whole garden?
00:37 It's a big sale.
00:38 There's probably close to 30,000 plants here.
00:42 We haven't counted them all but about 30,000 and all kinds of things from cactus, shrubs,
00:47 ground cover, trees, you name it, we got it.
00:50 Okay, and what's also great too is that people who might not have a green thumb get an opportunity
00:54 to come out and talk with you because you have some classes and some pop-ups happening
00:59 for people to learn about, of course, being a gardener.
01:05 We do.
01:06 You know, it's exciting because the entire horticulture staff is here as well as volunteers
01:11 and these are the people that work with the plants every day.
01:14 So they're knowledgeable, they're going to help you get the right plant for the right
01:18 space and sometimes if you go elsewhere you may not get all that years and years and years
01:24 of knowledge.
01:25 So it's a great class.
01:28 There's also classes, excuse me, where you're going to have an opportunity to learn a little
01:32 more about growing plants.
01:35 You know, we had a real tough summer so they're going to focus on things that are really tough
01:39 for your yard so you'll get a heads up on that.
01:42 Yeah, okay, let's talk a couple of things about plants, especially those who might just
01:48 be moving here, thinking about putting plants in and that is our cacti.
01:54 And people think that you need to water cacti for some reason.
01:58 Why is that, Kenny?
02:00 That's the best plant to have in your yard for not watering.
02:05 You know, watering is still important.
02:07 You think about it, you know, if someone put you out in the desert you'd need a little
02:10 drink every now and then too.
02:12 But the amount of water is the critical part and the time of year.
02:15 So if you get that knowledge and you understand, you know, the right time and the right amount,
02:21 I think you'll be in good shape.
02:23 But in general, you're right, you're better to err on the side of too little than too
02:27 much water when it comes to cactus.
02:29 Okay, let's talk about, of course, time very quickly about this because there's Members
02:35 Day and then there's just the general public day going on for the sale, right?
02:42 That's correct.
02:43 Our Members Day, we give them first opportunity to come and shop and that's on March 14th
02:48 and then it's open to the general public beginning on the 15th and into the weekend, the 16th
02:53 and the 17th.
02:54 There are still spots available too.
02:56 We've had a lot of early reservations but we do have spots open on the weekends.
03:01 So if you go online you can make a reservation there.
03:04 We do that so that we want to make sure everybody gets a parking spot and there's plenty of
03:09 room for everybody and it's not mayhem out here.
03:12 Yeah, okay, let me ask you, what is, I mean, I guess it's not a hard plant, but what would
03:18 be one of the hardest plants to keep alive in the desert?
03:22 I don't know if that made sense.
03:25 You know, no, that's a good question and I think sometimes people make the mistake of
03:30 thinking, you know, what I grew when I lived in New York or what I lived back east, I want
03:36 to grow that out here.
03:37 That's the mistake that people often make and if they can embrace growing desert plants
03:42 and we'll help them with that, then they may be able to figure out what they'll be successful
03:47 with because the last thing you want is them to come here, buy something, bring it home
03:50 and then a week later they have problems.
03:53 So I think it's more about, like I said earlier, choosing the right plant for the right space
03:56 and if you do that, you're going to have success.
03:59 If you want to grow something that's, you know, from back east, you're going to have
04:03 some problems.
04:04 Yeah, let's talk succulents really quick as we're doing this.
04:08 This is something that people really need to pay attention to.
04:10 They look beautiful.
04:11 I don't know, I don't see any of the little succulents around and the thing about those,
04:16 those grow like wildfires.
04:19 They grow like crazy and that's why you want to make sure you have the right spots for
04:22 them, right?
04:23 Did I lose Kenny?
04:24 All day long.
04:25 Oh, Kenny, say it again.
04:26 You want to be actively, oh, sorry.
04:36 There are many plants you really do want to make sure you have the right sun exposure
04:40 and that's key to things doing well.
04:43 You mentioned succulents.
04:44 Succulents really do tend to like a little afternoon sun protection.
04:49 So if you have a canopy or a tree or an eastern exposure, those are great spots for these,
04:54 but not everything is really meant to grow in full sun all day long.
04:57 And again, that's something we'll help you with.
04:59 And you can see signage that we're panning to now that talks about the specifics of each
05:04 plant.
05:05 Yeah.
05:06 Kenny, this is awesome.
05:07 Again, it's the Desert Botanical Garden Spring Plant Sale.
05:11 Try to get out there, over 30,000 plants Thursday for members and then throughout the weekend
05:17 it is for the general public.
05:19 And also members, you want to make sure you get into those pop-up classes that they're
05:24 happening to.
05:25 So, Kenny, thank you very much.
