Transcript
00:00 The 49ers just gave veteran free agent, edge rusher, Leonard Floyd, a two year, $20 million
00:07 deal worth up to $24 million with incentives and with 12 million guaranteed in year one.
00:15 There is the 49ers new starting defensive end opposite Nick Bosa, Chase Young, probably
00:19 not coming back.
00:20 Randy Gregory, probably not coming back.
00:23 Cleland Farrell, probably not coming back because Leonard Floyd is here and he's better
00:27 than all three of those guys put together.
00:29 I like this signing.
00:31 I'm the quality control guy.
00:33 I usually say, yeah, but, or, ah, they could have, I like the signing.
00:37 He's not too expensive.
00:39 They didn't break the bank for another defensive lineman.
00:42 He's a value signing and he's good.
00:44 He hasn't missed a game in years.
00:46 He hasn't had less than nine sacks in a season in years.
00:50 He's as consistent as can be.
00:51 He's going to be 32 next year.
00:53 You know exactly what you're getting from Leonard Floyd, which is a B plus edge rusher
00:57 in all facets.
00:59 Really the main question with Floyd is how well will he be able to set the edge and defend
01:05 the run in the wide nine front?
01:08 Isn't played in this before.
01:09 He's really been more of an outside linebacker in five man fronts.
01:13 And what's really interesting, he won a Superbowl with the Rams a few years ago.
01:18 He was before he was with the Rams when their defensive coordinator was Brandon Staley,
01:26 who is now the 49ers assistant head coach.
01:31 So it's possible Brandon Staley told John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, I love Leonard Floyd.
01:38 He's great.
01:39 Get him.
01:40 I know exactly how to use him.
01:42 It's possible the 49ers aren't as wedded to the wide nine front as they used to be.
01:50 Again, Brandon Staley is sort of the overseer of this defense and he has no background in
01:57 the wide nine.
01:58 He has a background running a five man front, sort of like what the Niners had when Vic
02:03 Fangio was a defensive coordinator.
02:04 So Brandon Staley starting to bring people that he used to work with.
02:11 Let me just say, thank goodness it wasn't Joey Bosa.
02:16 Although from what we hear, those two didn't really have the greatest relationship.
02:20 So maybe it's no surprise.
02:22 But the best part about the Niners signing Leonard Floyd is that they're not going to
02:27 be getting most likely Joey Bosa.
02:30 I mean, that would have been just not great.
02:32 I mean, really, the best part about this is that Leonard Floyd doesn't miss games or hasn't
02:37 in a very long time.
02:38 The Niners need more players like that.
02:40 I give this signing an A.
