Analyzing why Joshua Dobbs is a good fit on the San Francisco 49ers.
Transcript
00:00 The Niners signed Joshua Dobbs to a one-year deal, like $2 million.
00:04 A lot cheaper than Sam Darnold. Darnold went to the Vikings.
00:08 Dobbs went from the Vikings to the Niners, so kind of a swap.
00:12 My dad and I saw Josh Dobbs in person together last season. He came to one game. I don't know
00:18 if you guys know this. He came to the Cardinals game. We sat next to each other and watched
00:22 Joshua Dobbs. What do you say, Dad? Okay, here's what happened. I'll give you a little background.
00:27 I haven't been to any kind of game in any sport professionally since I retired, which is almost
00:34 eight years ago. I don't know. Just one day, I said to Iggy, "I haven't been to a football game.
00:41 It might be fun. Sit next to my son and watch a game." I wouldn't do it again, by the way. Once
00:47 was enough. It was very nice to see some people there. There were some people I realized I don't
00:54 want to see anymore in the press. Funny how that goes. Anyway, we're sitting there. We don't take
01:05 the Cardinals seriously. How could you last season? I'm watching this Joshua Dobbs who I never heard
01:11 of. I don't even know the coach's name right now. At one point, I said to Iggy, "This Joshua Dobbs
01:19 is pretty good." I actually said, "This guy's pretty good." He was leading drives. He was
01:26 completing a lot of passes over the middle, just sort of like Purdy. He was mobile. He wasn't
01:34 a patch up in the homes, but he was mobile. I also said, "I think this coach is pretty good.
01:41 He doesn't have a team, but he's actually competing." What I feel about Joshua Dobbs is
01:47 this. He's a good backup quarterback. I think it's an answer. Is he as good as Sam Donald? I
01:55 have no idea because I never saw Sam Donald really play. He didn't do anything. I know he makes a lot
02:01 of mistakes. Could Joshua Dobbs bring the Niners to the Super Bowl if it came to that? No, I don't
02:09 think he could, but he could play a half. He could play a couple of games if Purdy were hurt, and he
02:16 could win those games. All in all, I think they did well. What do you think, Iggy?
02:22 I think they did well. The more I think about this signing, let's talk about all the things
02:28 Joshua Dobbs does well. He's mobile. He runs well. As a passer, he's decisive. He doesn't
02:39 hold on the ball forever. He gets rid of the ball pretty quickly. He doesn't take sacks.
02:44 He doesn't turn the ball over a lot. He did with the Vikings. He had one game with the
02:48 Vikings where he threw four picks. But on the Cardinals, especially that day when we were there
02:52 against the Niners, he had a good defense last year. He protected the football. He didn't beat
02:57 himself. He gave the Cardinals a chance to win. He had them in the game deep into the second half.
03:02 Yes. He was a nice surprise. I never heard of him.
03:10 I remember feeling like, "Look, he's not as gifted as Kyler Murray, but he's more...
03:14 He knows what he's doing." As opposed to Kyler Murray, he seems like, "Go ahead."
03:20 He's more football intelligent.
03:22 Football intelligent, prepared, whatever you want to call it. Kyler seems like he's going out there
03:26 and sort of winging it. He's very athletic, and he's very good. But Josh Dobbs isn't just going
03:30 out there and winging it. He seems like he knows exactly what the game plan is, and he's executing
03:34 it. He did beat the Cowboys last year. That was really impressive. Again, if Purdy goes down for
03:40 two games, four games, he seems like a good option.
03:44 Yeah. You know what? I think they did well. I do. I'm glad they did it now,
03:53 as opposed to what we had last season with all the insanity, the circus atmosphere in training camp.
04:03 Who's going to be the number two quarterback? There was more talk about who was going to be
04:08 the number two quarterback than any other topic on the team, which is a team that's topsy-turvy.
04:13 They handled it. I credit the 49ers. Seriously, I credit them for getting past this insanity.
04:22 Yeah. The whole Sam Darnold, Trey Lance competition was a distraction, because once
04:28 they decided that Brock Purdy was their guy, neither Sam Darnold nor Trey Lance mattered.
04:33 And now, less than a year later, they're both gone. And what the Niners have is two backups
04:39 who are very professional and are very under the radar. No one cares.
04:44 No one cares what Josh Dobbs is going to do in practice, which is fine. He just gets to go and
04:50 do his job. Same with Brandon Allen. No one freaking needs the Josh Dobbs, Brandon Allen
04:54 update. They can just go be backups, and the story can be about Purdy and starters. Not a sideshow.
05:02 And another thing you will never have to hear about again, Iggy, the quarterback room.
05:08 Oh, God.
05:10 The quarterback room. Remember last time, Lynch, I think it was Lynch, and he meant well,
05:14 was saying, "We have the best quarterback room in the league." Who cares? You don't put a room on
05:19 the field. You put a quarterback on the field. So probably the quarterback room isn't as good,
05:24 but they have a good quarterback and a good backup.
05:27 Yeah. When you talk about the room, that means you're not so confident in the starter,
05:30 right? And you're trying to head your bed like, "Hey, sure, our starters arm is falling off,
05:36 but we got this other guy that we like too. And the third guy's great." There is a shortage of
05:41 good quality quarterbacks in the world, but we have three of them, even though our first guy isn't.
05:45 Now Brock Purdy just set the record, the franchise record for passing yards in the season. You don't
05:52 need to head your beds anymore. You don't need a guy who's looking to get his career back on track.
05:55 You just need a backup quarterback. And that's what Josh Dobbs is.
05:59 So all credit to the 49ers. That's how I feel.
06:03 Yeah. He's in his late 20s. He's not trying to jumpstart his career. He knows exactly what he is.
06:10 He's perfect for the role. And he's cheap. He's like a quarter of the price of Sam Darnold.
06:16 And I like a backup quarterback. I like any quarterback, but the mobility to me is important.
06:21 Are you going to take a bunch of sacks? Can you run around? Can you make some plays?
06:24 Because you're probably not going to be as good of a passer as a starter. So can you do something
06:27 else? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So can we talk about that back in quarterback competition last year? That
06:34 was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it. I know you got a lot of hits from that. I did. It was fun to
06:39 be snarky about because it didn't matter. Now I got to really work to get those hits next year.
06:43 It's too bad. We'll find something. Don't worry.
