Extremist views must not be allowed to be given a platform to be extolled, health secretary Victoria Atkins has said as the Government prepared a fresh crackdown. Ministers and officials are working on a new definition of extremism, with groups captured by the term set to be effectively blacklisted by the Government and public bodies, and cut off from public funding and engagement. 00:00 As the Prime Minister set out on the steps of Downing Street, we fundamentally believe in free speech, of course we do,
00:07 but there are some people who hold ideologies and dogmas that do not sit with our values as a society.
00:15 And so we want to preserve the right to free speech, of course we do,
00:19 but we have to also acknowledge that people that are holding extremist views should not be given platforms and funding in order to extol those views.
00:29 Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, is going to be announcing more over the coming days.
00:35 Just as we must think about how people of all faiths feel in our country,
00:42 I'm also concerned about reports that I've seen that Jewish people feel unsafe walking the streets of London when these demonstrations are concerned.
00:50 So it's a very delicate balancing act. We will manage it, but it's right, I think,
00:56 that the Prime Minister has put such a focus on ensuring that our values as a country are respected by all.
