00:00 The students who use this classroom have been abducted.
00:03 They were taken hostage on Thursday by bandits in what was one of the largest mass abductions
00:10 in Nigerian years.
00:11 One of the students who escaped the school in Kuriga in Kaduna state explained how he
00:18 got away.
00:19 "After our abduction and on our way in the bush, I saw a hidden path and I hid.
00:27 And I stayed there and slept because I was tired.
00:30 After more than an hour, I woke and looked around but no one was there.
00:35 So I started walking and found myself in a small village."
00:39 The abduction in Kuriga of 287 students followed one in Borno state in Nigeria's northeast
00:48 days earlier of more than 200 displaced people, mainly women and children.
00:54 The Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said on ex-formerly Twitter that following the incidents
00:59 in Borno and Kaduna, he has directed security and intelligence agencies to immediately rescue
01:05 the victims and ensure that justice is served against the perpetrators.
01:09 The kidnapping issue has become one of the biggest threats to everyday life in parts
01:14 of the country, with almost 5,000 people kidnapped since Tinubu came to power last May, promising
01:19 to change the situation.
01:21 In most cases, ransoms are demanded and are paid.
01:24 Amnesty International's country director for Nigeria condemns the government's record
01:29 in dealing with the abductions.
01:31 "We believe that these payments are some of the reasons why abduction is becoming more
01:40 and more lucrative and more and more rampant.
01:42 There should be no room for incentive for people to endanger the lives of children
01:47 who are at school and people who are displaced by conflicts."
01:52 On Saturday, 15 schoolchildren were abducted in Sokoto state in the northwest.
01:57 This latest spate of incidents comes almost a decade after a case that captured world
02:01 attention - the mass kidnappings by the Boko Haram armed group at a school in Chibok in
02:07 Borno state.
