Analyzing whether San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is a leader of men.
Transcript
00:00 So we're talking about leadership.
00:02 Is Kyle Shanahan?
00:03 A leader of men,
00:04 he's an elite offensive coach.
00:06 Everyone would agree on that and
00:08 people respect his football acumen.
00:10 No question about it.
00:12 Is he a leader of men?
00:16 Yes, given the way the players buy in
00:20 and follow him and speak so highly of him
00:22 like I'm just going off what they do 100%.
00:25 The only drawback and kind of not
00:27 the kind of is the negative of him.
00:29 That arrogance which leads him to
00:31 take some false steps right in his
00:33 thinking and him thinking that he's
00:34 like the most know-it-all person,
00:36 which is kind of always a drawback
00:38 of a good amount of leaders, right?
00:39 Like it's like they think they're everything.
00:41 They think they know what's best all the time.
00:44 We even what's wrong.
00:45 Ideally,
00:45 a leader would probably feel a little
00:47 bit more open suggestions, right?
00:48 Whereas him is just like just not forward
00:51 thinking like like he'll probably hear it,
00:52 but it's not as open as it would probably be like,
00:55 but I'm just going to go based
00:57 off how the players buy in.
00:58 They always talk about Kyle Shan,
01:00 everything and look the the NFL
01:01 PA report card said coaching.
01:02 He got an A minus some like that,
01:04 which is top five in the league.
01:06 So to me it's like look,
01:07 they love the guy they respect him.
01:09 So whatever he says is word no matter
01:11 what like Kyle does the quarterback.
01:12 It's all good.
01:13 There's never been anything.
01:14 No problem in the culture at all.
01:16 So 1000% is leader of men.
01:17 I just would like you know,
01:19 obviously more self reflection
01:20 on his own part.
01:21 I don't see him as a leader of men.
01:23 Yes, they like him.
01:24 Yes, they respect his ability
01:26 to scheme up offense for sure.
01:27 But I just don't think he has the
01:30 ability to galvanize a team the way
01:32 John Harbaugh does Jim Harbaugh does.
01:34 Dan Campbell does like there's a
01:37 certain emotional aspect to being a
01:39 leader that Kyle lacks and that's OK.
01:42 It's OK 'cause he brings so much to the table.
01:45 Like yeah,
01:46 everyone wants a top five offensive
01:48 coach in the league.
01:49 Everyone,
01:50 no matter what his personality is like.
01:53 I just don't think he has that.
01:55 I don't know what you want to call it.
01:58 Only has it and I think.
02:01 The reason it worked so well with
02:03 solid D'Amico is they had it.
02:05 You had these defensive coordinators
02:07 who were almost leading the team
02:09 because what's interesting about Kyle,
02:11 he's an offensive coach and an
02:13 offensive head coach who tries
02:15 to win with defense.
02:16 When it's really when it's really
02:18 the pressures on he's going to.
02:20 He's going to trust his defense over
02:22 his offense, which kind of puts that
02:24 into the head coaching position like
02:26 he tried to win the Super Bowl with
02:28 his defense just a month ago and fired.
02:30 Steve Wilks for not getting it done.
02:32 Like no man,
02:33 you win with your offense.
02:34 Go for the touchdown.
02:35 What are you doing?
02:36 I don't consider him a leader in men.
02:38 I think he's buddy buddy with
02:40 the top players on the team.
02:41 I think they respect him,
02:42 but I think he needs his defensive
02:44 coordinator to be that galvanizing force.
02:46 And I don't know about I mean,
02:48 it's for showing it for show.
02:50 Ain't Brandon Staley,
02:51 so it better be Nick Sorensen.
02:53 If a show ain't Brandon Staley,
02:54 no, no, no, no.
02:56 No, it is a fraud.
02:59 OK, look if you're comparing him to
03:00 Campbell's I'm horrible and all those
03:02 people like OK for sure in retrospect,
03:03 he's not a leader in that category,
03:05 right?
03:05 But is Andy Rita leader like that?
03:07 No, it's I think at this point
03:09 in the way the game is going,
03:10 you really want your head coach to be.
03:12 What's the best way to do it?
03:14 Someone who's calling plays, you know?
03:16 I feel like part of why the Jets are kind
03:18 of in a weird spot in the first place.
03:19 I know the defense is good,
03:20 but why is it Robert Salah?
03:21 Call him please.
03:21 That's what you got hired for.
03:23 You know my.
03:23 We can call Andy Reed.
03:24 Let's talk about Andy Reed for a second.
03:26 His style of leadership to me is
03:27 very much empowering players.
03:30 Very much.
03:31 Which is which works.
03:33 Does Kyle have that type of leadership?
03:36 He look. No.
03:40 Like Andy Reed lets his quarterback
03:42 be the leader of the team.
03:43 Kyle doesn't.
03:46 Yeah, I will say though that
03:48 they both have a good where
03:49 he is similar to enderies like
03:50 they know how to pick the leaders
03:51 on the deep on the team.
03:52 True and both Fred Warner,
03:54 Chad Williams like that's Chris Jones.
03:58 That's perfect people you want
04:00 and he just let's admire.
04:01 He tells the players like look,
04:03 get the message out.
04:04 This is you.
04:05 You're my I'm I'm the commander.
04:06 You're the generals.
04:07 Get it done.
04:08 Yeah, like I'm running the play.
04:09 Like I'm the captain.
04:11 Like look at me.
04:12 I'm the captain.
04:12 Not like go ahead.
04:13 You go in talking for
04:14 Game of Thrones people.
04:16 He's the king and he has a bunch
04:17 of like the hand to the king.
04:19 So five different people
04:19 to go give him commands.
04:21 So I that's where I think
04:23 is the similarity
04:23 and they're both play callers.
04:25 Like so I guess in your standpoint,
04:26 sure, if you want,
04:27 if you want to take the
04:28 he's not a leader in med, OK,
04:30 and you're right, it's fine.
04:32 But does he need to be?
04:34 Does he need to be?
04:34 Because what's going on?
04:35 Not necessarily not.
04:37 No, he doesn't.
04:37 But what he needs to have
04:39 is the self-awareness
04:42 of what he is and what he isn't
04:44 and then compliment himself
04:45 the way he did with Robert Sala
04:47 and Domingo Ryan's.
04:48 That's why the Steve Wilkes
04:50 hire in retrospect
04:51 was kind of strange.
04:52 It's like, man, Steve's like you.
04:55 He's not like Domingo and Robert.
04:57 Steve's like you.
04:58 And two of those type of coaches
05:01 means that you don't really have a leader
05:04 outside of the locker room.
05:05 And we saw that the team
05:07 had effort issues,
05:08 which it shouldn't have had.
05:09 So now maybe Nick Sorensen
05:11 is young and upbeat.
05:13 And that's frankly
05:13 what the Niners need.
05:14 They need that energy
05:16 from somewhere, I think.
05:17 And I think that's why
05:17 they brought Wilkes down.
05:18 One of the reasons
05:19 they're like we need
05:20 some energy on the sideline
05:21 is not coming from our head coach.
05:22 He's staring at his play sheet
05:24 like he doesn't know
05:25 what to order at IHOP.
05:26 It's been a long time, man.
05:27 Just get the Rudy
05:28 Tutti fresh and fruity.
05:30 Yeah, that makes sense.
05:32 He needs the yin to his yang.
05:33 And that does.
05:34 I think we all do.
05:36 Honestly, we all do.
05:37 Jesus, we all do.
05:38 I think that's good for his balance.
05:40 Yeah, but OK.
05:42 Yeah, that one.
05:43 OK, sure.
05:44 I'll concede to that one.
05:45 That makes sense.
05:46 I still see him
05:47 like definitely like he is a leader
05:48 to people that couldn't
05:49 like listen to this thing.
05:50 But yeah, for sure.
05:51 He's someone where.
05:52 It's not an enthusiastic energy,
05:55 like that's not
05:55 like your optimal leader,
05:56 but he is a leader for sure.
05:57 I think it's a Bill Belichick style.
05:59 It's like, look, man, this guy is weird.
06:02 This guy's kind of like quiet and a little,
06:04 but he's the best.
06:05 Like he's the best defensive coach ever.
06:07 So we trust him.
06:08 And whatever he says we're going to do,
06:09 we respect him.
06:10 But like.
06:10 He hasn't spoken or looking at me
06:13 in years.
06:15 He's definitely more a
06:15 Bill Belichick type,
06:16 because I think he does more like
06:18 to talk down and at his players
06:20 than he does like to uplift him.
06:21 Right.
06:22 Just like I think
06:23 if he does anything positive,
06:24 he does it throughout the week.
06:25 Look, he says all the time
06:26 and his press is like,
06:27 oh, my message
06:27 is seem short and sweet.
06:28 I'm going to say he says it like
06:30 he has like this
06:32 in a way, like still like the CEO,
06:34 like type of like boss
06:36 that people are like,
06:37 oh, we're not trying to piss off the boss.
06:38 Like we got to earn his favor.
06:39 And when he does there, he has.
06:40 He has this is where the old school
06:42 coach comes in.
06:43 Like that.
06:44 This is where he has
06:44 his old school mentality.
06:45 And it relates to how he calls plays.
06:47 Right. Running offense.
06:48 He's one of the last of a dying breed.
06:49 A fullback.
06:50 Like, what the hell?
06:51 So he is so old school.
06:53 It reminds me of growing up
06:54 like, oh, coach, like, OK, like
06:56 they're not they're
06:57 they're going to have
06:57 like a little bit of prop up.
06:59 It's mostly going to be talking at you
07:00 and kind of down you when you mess up.
07:01 And also like when you do good,
07:03 it's expected of you.
07:04 And that's Belichick.
07:05 That's Fangio.
07:06 And those are two guys
07:07 that really had a tough time last year.
07:09 Their players didn't seem to like
07:10 playing for him and Bill Belichick
07:12 got essentially fired
07:13 and then tried to get it,
07:14 tried to land on his feet this year.
07:16 And all the teams that had openings
07:17 were like.
07:18 No, I don't think
07:22 I don't think players like you anymore.
07:24 I think the style of coaching
07:25 in the league has changed a lot
07:26 now that Gen Z is in full effect.
07:28 And I think you see
07:30 a lot of the successful coaches
07:32 are very positive, very upbeat.
07:33 Dan Campbell, like he's crying during games,
07:36 telling players how much he loves them.
07:38 And that is so not Kyle Sane.
07:39 And he's old school and it works for him.
07:42 But I wonder for how much longer.
07:44 Well, honestly, if you're not calling plays,
07:45 I expect you to be that extra.
07:46 You better be.
07:47 You better have to like Sirianni.
07:50 Look, Sirianni is the worst leader of men.
07:52 We want to talk.
07:52 What do you do?
07:53 He's the call plays.
07:55 He's over there about
07:56 a lot of embarrassing hurts.
07:57 Like, what the hell are you doing, bro?
07:59 Like, why are you trying to beat
08:00 your quarterback's ass for that?
08:01 What are you doing?
08:01 So it's so it's so freaking weird to me.
08:04 I'll say this about Kyle Sane.
08:05 Like, again, back to the players,
08:06 players on the team say nothing.
08:08 What's even more revealing?
08:08 Players that leave still prop him up a lot.
08:11 Kendrick Bourne is like
08:12 they all say a lot of great things.
08:13 So I feel like, though,
08:15 if anyone ever says anything
08:17 critical about Kyle Shanahan, anyone.
08:19 You have so many people
08:21 being like, oh, you don't know ball,
08:22 you don't know ball, you don't know ball.
08:23 Like, cool.
08:25 All right. All right.
08:25 All right. All right.
08:26 He's a lot of stuff,
08:28 but not like the players.
08:29 If the players say it's what's he's for sure.
08:32 Top three, four offensive coach in the league.
08:34 But.
08:35 Under pressure in the biggest
08:37 moments of his career,
08:38 he gets away from all the stuff
08:41 that goes well for him, like,
08:43 what's he known for on offense,
08:44 motion and shifts and play action
08:47 with the season on the line,
08:49 he's like empty backfield as like.
08:51 What?
08:52 What what happened to your run game?
08:54 What happened to your
08:55 offensive player of the year?
08:56 What are you doing?
08:56 Who are you right now?
08:57 What how are you trying to win this game?
08:59 That's my thing with Kyle.
09:00 He can be so good for so long.
09:02 And then when it's really time
09:03 to actually seal the deal, it's like,
09:05 let me trick you.
09:06 Let me do my defense like what?
09:07 I think that's where
09:09 that's where Kyle Shanahan gets exposed.
09:12 Can we get exposed easily if it's
09:13 like the tricks and pony show?
09:14 If it's not working,
09:15 he's so easy to defend against,
09:16 which is why
09:18 if the running game is not working well,
09:20 that passing game becomes
09:21 so easy to defend.
09:22 So predictable, which is why
09:23 they went to that man coverage.
09:24 It's like, hey, just don't get beat
09:25 on those double, triple moves
09:26 on those little shimmy shakes off.
09:27 I you can.
09:28 Debo is easy to guard.
09:29 I don't think Kyle has
09:31 that good of a outright
09:33 straight drop back passing game.
09:34 I don't think I think it's pretty
09:35 like vanilla standard,
09:36 like something you find off Madden
09:38 where only works,
09:39 where the running game is good,
09:40 because why he runs so much
09:41 formations out of run formations
09:43 that defenses have seen.
09:44 So when they do do that, it's like,
09:46 oh, crap, it's not a run.
09:47 Great receivers open
09:48 in two and a half seconds.
09:49 So that's where I really want
09:51 Kyle Shanahan number one
09:52 to work on the most like you.
09:53 And you've talked about before,
09:54 like get pretty more on the move.
09:55 Yeah, let's let's let's do
09:57 some sprint right, sprint
09:57 left or something like that.
09:58 And it got on the move
09:59 and do something more
10:00 that makes the passing game
10:02 efficient, where it's just reliant
10:03 on your run game.
