Analyzing how the San Francisco 49ers have established a scapegoat culture under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Transcript
00:00 It seems to me that this team from Jed York to Kyle Shanahan for whatever reason the last seven years has developed a culture of scapegoating
00:09 Unlike many teams we've seen I mean it's a little bit like the bills but from 30 years ago or the
00:15 Rockets from like 10 years ago, but they keep coming really close to winning the Super Bowl and not getting it done
00:21 And every year it seems like there's someone on the team who doesn't really matter who's
00:27 mostly insignificant who gets blamed for a large
00:32 portion of the Niners disappointment and
00:35 They replaced that guy and come back the next season with essentially the same team
00:39 Same approach the same philosophy and try to run it back
00:42 But without that scapegoat anymore
00:44 Two years ago, it was Joukowsky Tart because he dropped that interception the NFC Championship game. It's all your fault Joukowsky
00:49 Go away, we don't want to look at you anymore. Right next year is Tyler Croft's fault
00:52 Yeah, I mean, maybe it was a little risky asking him to block Hasan Reddick
00:56 But that was the call he didn't execute goodbye drafting Camelot - and this year
01:00 Spencer Burford man, you should have blocked Chris Jones and if you had touchdown, maybe
01:06 Potentially you got to go. I mean, they haven't ran them out the team yet
01:11 But you wonder Steve Wilkes got that treatment just a couple weeks ago
01:14 What do you think of this?
01:18 Culture
01:20 well, I think it's really the the adverse to
01:24 The lack of accountability in the culture it is right. It's the opposite if you don't have accountability then you have scapegoats
01:31 So if we're all not taking accountability for what we did wrong
01:35 individually, then you got to find somebody who has to take that blame and
01:39 That's what it is. And then that starts at the top starts with Jed York starts with Kyle Shanahan and that that's where it comes from
01:47 Yeah, and that's why I feel like the culture this team is strange
01:51 And they've come so close to winning Super Bowls that they've almost been able to say it all works for them
01:56 But to me, there's something fundamentally wrong with their culture and it's like they're not a team
02:01 They're an inner circle
02:03 There are two teams and that's why we talked about the Cabo click
02:07 There's the guys who make a lot of money on the team and the guys who don't yeah
02:11 Right. There's the guys who have money power and influence and the guys who don't
02:15 Kyle's one of them both is one of them fifty four seventy one twenty three forty four eighty
02:19 You know who they are about ten guys, maybe eight
02:22 everyone else
02:25 You could be the scapegoat next year to Shawn Gibson. It could be you Colton Kivitz
02:30 It could be you the next DC. I mean, that's just how it is. And I think that's I
02:36 Don't know. That's a that's not necessarily a championship culture. I
02:41 would love to do some research on like
02:44 pay because
02:47 This team seems like a microcosm of this country whereas
02:50 the 1% have like make like 90% of the wealth and
02:56 Then the other 99%
02:58 Should they take 90% of the responsibility to like right like nigga?
03:03 Yeah, you're the guy I mean they hired Steve Wilks and and basically thinking well any anyone can coach Nick Bosa
03:10 Anyone could do that
03:13 Like you're the reason this team wins and loses right when asked after the season
03:18 Are you confident you're gonna be back in the Super Bowl next year?
03:20 Kittle said we have Nick Bosa still right you take the responsibility
03:24 Don't put it on the defensive coordinator who's making maybe a million dollars a year to maybe yeah
03:31 This all just well, this is why and people get mad at me
03:34 Why does Kyle Shannon need to be accountable Ryan makes no sense
03:36 This is why it's because it's the opposite of scapegoating right if you take if you are accountable
03:42 You don't need to scapegoat anybody you you take it on your chest. I'm responsible for this team
03:46 I'm the head coach
03:47 So there's things that I need to do better and work on
03:50 And develop and improve on and then if you do that you approach it that way
03:54 You don't need to skate leaders in the team will do it, too
03:56 Right the leaders on team will do it, too
03:59 There's only one leader in the team that does it right now the quarterback Brock, but everyone else takes cue from well of Kyle's
04:05 Responsibility I won't either CMC
04:08 CMC guys who haven't been here that long
04:11 Hey, yes Burford. I think actually did a good job of it. Hell yeah
04:15 Bruce a young man doing that that shows a lot of maturity. I think there needs to be more of that
04:21 I think I'm telling you man. It's such an important thing to me for a lot of people
04:25 It doesn't matter at all and they think I'm stupid for constantly harping on accountability
04:29 But accountability is one of the most important things in leadership and building culture
04:33 And I really hope caution improves at being account
04:37 You know that my favorite moment from caution and probably the only moment that I can recall him being accountable is
04:42 The whole train last thing I feel like I let him down
04:45 That was one of my favorite moments from caution
04:48 And I like good for you man, we just set step up and take accountability there
04:53 That's the one and only time I can remember him doing that
04:56 I want to see more of that from caution and move forward
04:58 I think right would really because I mean he had to say that but ultimately this team is
05:04 Getting judged whether or not they win the Super Bowl. They've been so close for four or five years and
05:08 They never change. They never say, you know, we got to stop running it back. We got to do something fundamentally different they say
05:16 They imply it was our third string tight ends fault. It was our backup right guards fault
05:22 It was our strong safeties fault for this one mistake at the end of the game like
05:27 No
05:29 No
05:29 You have a core of like seven or eight people plus the coach you guys have been together a long time
05:34 Stop blaming, you know
05:36 Understudies and backup dancers and stuff. It's you guys
05:40 George with the two catches I you quit three D Bo with three McCaffrey with the fumble like you guys
05:47 Yeah, Kyle with your inability to freaking pick up a blitz
05:51 That's right conversation of these shouldn't be centered on Burford, right?
05:56 Exactly. Yeah, I agree what I mean and that starts at the top cause gotta be good
06:00 They need to add like we all need to after this game. They need to sit down
06:04 We all need to look at ourselves and figure out how we get this done because we all made mistakes in this game that didn't
06:12 That ultimately cost us winning the Super Bowl. What's wrong with our formula?
06:18 I would a redeem is it culture what is wrong with our formula?
06:21 How are we all how we is close to totally missing our window our Super Bowl window, right? We learn that's accountability
06:29 And that's what that's what I it may happen behind the scenes. I don't know but on Front Street
06:35 It's not happening
06:36 So this is all I know if they don't win a Super Bowl
06:39 They're gonna go down as one of the best teams to not win the Super Bowl and people will study them
06:43 What did they do wrong? Yeah, why did the 49ers not win a Super Bowl under Kyle Shanahan they had
06:50 Kittle for all those years Bosa for all what was what held him back. Was it just bad luck?
06:56 was it just that they went up against Patrick Mahomes or
06:58 Was there something they fundamentally didn't do right that teams need to avoid in the future? That'll be the I
07:04 Guess the topic. Yeah, this was this is something they can work on right here. Yes
07:09 Yes, if the first round pick is a right guard, you know, they're scapegoating scapegoating Spencer Burford
07:15 Well, I hope it's some something on that right side of the line at least that was that to me would say hey
07:20 They're learning at least honestly, even if it is, you know, I it shouldn't be on true. I think Burford can develop
07:26 I don't think he's done yet
07:28 But what I will say is McKibbitz Burford even Brindell, they're not elite
07:33 Offensive linemen and if you want to win the Super Bowl, I feel like that's a main area that you should target to try to improve
07:40 Yeah, I mean, let's be honest
07:44 Just fair I
07:46 Think Banks Brendel Burford and McKibbitz all got a little better this year. I
07:52 think the coach on the o-line is excellent and
07:55 The players the young guys are all improving a little bit Brendel isn't young but he's inexperienced
08:01 Like give give the coach some someone really good right really good. He might improve too
08:09 Right. I'm saying I mean, I think all those young guys are exceeding expectations, but their expectations were so low cuz how you got him
08:15 Right, right
08:17 so hopefully the invest that's gonna be the big thing for me is and
08:20 That'll be the that'll be the admission if we see and I'm worried it's not gonna happen
08:25 But if we see in this draft that the couch and and John Lynch go after linemen heavy
08:29 finally
08:31 Upfront early in the draft. That'll be an admission that hey, we should have probably taken care of this already
08:37 Yeah, we got to do something different. I mean, I keep going back to the one time that she's lost the Super Bowl at my home
08:42 They changed their whole operation, right? They're like, oh
08:46 Okay, offensive lines like the most important thing
08:49 so
08:50 We're gonna trade Tyreek Hill eventually and we're gonna reinvest in this offensive line and we're gonna have a totally different type of offense
08:57 It's gonna be more like the Alex Smith offense. We're not gonna be trying to stretch people deep. We're gonna
09:03 Yeah, you know Dinkin Dunk to a large degree and protect our quarterback
09:08 They learned and they haven't lost Super Bowl
09:11 Last two years. You'd love to see the Niners do one thing like that where they like this was the lesson they learned
09:17 Right this and now that they're look at this run that they're on. I
09:21 Really? Hope that's what we see. Yeah
09:24 City Bert. So again if they say it said they trade Brandon I you
09:27 He really upset but if they get
09:32 Like a Tristan worse type that they can put it right tackle. It's fair trade. Yeah fair trade
09:38 Something the Chiefs might get my consider change. Although frankly, you'd rather trade Debo
09:41 Yes
09:44 (upbeat music)
09:47 (upbeat music)
