Backup quarterback has been heavily valued by the San Francisco 49ers in year's past. Is it a pressing need now with a vacancy at the position?

00:00 We think the Niners plan it backup quarterback is
00:02 Backup quarterback, it's finally good that like backup quarterback doesn't feel like such a spotlight as it has in years past
00:11 Thanks to Jimmy James Richard Garoppolo
00:13 But I think honestly first and foremost, they're gonna probably look to see if they can get Sam Donald back
00:19 I think they like him. I think it's just this point. It's a relationship thing
00:22 It's not so much whether he can do performance. Oh, you know what? I think it is performance wise
00:25 I think they do think he's a capable quarterback. I don't I don't
00:29 To me, I don't care who you go as quarterback because I don't give a damn about backup quarterback anymore
00:35 Can we finally start devaluating this position this?
00:37 No, no fan base
00:40 No team in the league talks about backup quarterbacks in the last five six years more than comes to 49ers topics
00:46 And it's all because like Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance like and I get it's like well if you have a capable backup quarterback
00:52 Then it's you you have a good talent around you that you can still skate by for a portion of the season
00:57 Yeah, sure, but look at Brock pretty goes down. You're kind of screwed. You know, you're kind of screwed
01:01 But yeah, I think first of all, it's gonna look at Sam Darnold
01:04 If not, then just find someone who is a relatively cheap
01:07 Backup out there go for like two two point five and then you're gonna draft someone
01:12 I fully think that they're gonna draft someone sign someone cheap and draft someone because at this point
01:16 Start devaluing your backup position
01:18 I don't want to hear too much of this like because every other team in the league
01:21 If their quarterback goes down your seasons over like stop trying to mitigate and try to find like oh
01:26 We gotta find someone who can be our next Nick Foles from six years ago like no stop. That's not gonna happen back up quarterback
01:31 No mass science. I disagree with you on this
01:34 I
01:35 Strenuously disagree with you like I'm looking right now nine quarterbacks played 17 games last year
01:41 Then you had pretty Mahomes and Lamar Jackson who you know had that bye week at the end of the year
01:45 But like still it seems like most teams have to play their backup quarterback at some point in season
01:51 And if that guy sucks, then you're in trouble, but look at the Browns like they had Joe Flacco their season
01:57 They made it to the playoffs
01:58 obviously
01:59 you're gonna need your starting quarterback to come back at some point to win that Super Bowl but if you could have a backup who
02:03 Just like keeps you in it like the Bengals did
02:06 Is that is that Donald they fit the Niners think it is I mean I
02:11 Think they resign him frankly. I don't think there's a market for him
02:15 The same contract that you did with Darla last year four point five or was it five million essentially at the end of what?
02:20 I said and done
02:22 Yeah, why?
02:24 Why are you so much?
02:25 Yes
02:26 Remember last year was like they probably thought he was actually gonna play due to injury or playing time like so that was a little weird
02:32 You know like with that whole quarterback situation making five times as much as the starter kind of weird, right?
02:36 Yeah, so I think this year it's like you got to take half of that
02:40 So Darla might be like wait, why am I gonna get paid half of that?
02:42 What's in context like girl out of you starting is not gonna happen unless pretty gets hurt
02:46 So right so maybe he'd rather go to another team where the quarterback isn't as good
02:50 And I keep seeing his name floated around teams like the Steelers or the bear
02:53 I don't know some weird stuff and I'm like are the Broncos I saw it was like what he's gonna offer
02:58 So he's gonna have offers so he might go he might leave
03:00 He's got these gone probably to be honest. So at that point find someone 2.5. Here you go. I
03:05 Wouldn't mind you Kobe percent for that. But to me it's like look don't don't don't don't empty the coffers for these guys
03:12 Don't do a five million dollar deal, you know, it just resaw Brandon Allen and draft a guy
03:19 How about that
03:21 You've ran it down the vet minimum here you go and then draft a guy in like the fifth round
03:28 He's making the the minimum minimum and you have the cheapest quarterback room in the league by far
03:32 I don't see why you want to bring in someone who's making significantly more money than Brock purdy
03:36 like why you're not hedging in any way Brock purdy's healthy and he's
03:40 not proven but
03:42 He's close to it. So
03:45 Being on this cheap deal was to
03:47 Use that extra money and put it elsewhere not to spend that extra money on the back on the back up, right?
03:53 Right, right. That's why I draw the line. It's like look I get it like oh
03:56 Our season's not gonna be contingent on quarterback. Like no, that's every team's. What are you talking about?
04:01 It's every team's dilemma
04:02 So no, but that extra three to four million on a backup and find yourself a more polished guarder
04:08 I don't know a sock. I don't know where we're gonna put that I put that anywhere else anywhere else and yeah be fine
04:14 Yeah, you can get backup quarterbacks. You don't have to spend a lot of money on him. You have brand now
04:18 He knows your system you like him and you have
04:20 Brian greasy and Steve slow it who drafted Brock purdy give him another
04:26 Crack at it. You might get another quarterback who really fits your system. It's a very specific
04:32 System with very specific needs that you might be able to find on day three again
04:37 So I'd be kind of disappointed if they signed Sam Donald like Sam
04:42 You seem like a nice guy. You seem like you're gonna be in the league a while
04:46 Go some like get out of here man. Get out of here go somewhere where you get a chance to play
04:52 You know
04:54 Stick it around. It's cuz he probably he wants to even for a lesser value
04:57 I think he probably can see himself being a long-term backup here. I think well
05:01 I think learning Kyle Shanahan system is there's value in that like if you're here for a year or two
05:06 Like all of us he's been here a year any team that's running the Niner system
05:09 for example Atlanta Atlanta might be interested in Sam Donald because
05:13 He knows a system as opposed to a year ago when he didn't maybe I'm wrong
05:19 But I think I'm right
05:22 (upbeat music)
05:25 (upbeat music)
