Here is what 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had to say on his last day at the 49ers' facility.
Transcript
00:00 >> Brock, now that you've had a couple days to kind of take it all in and
00:04 reflect, just what are your,
00:07 where's your mind right now as far as what happened on Sunday?
00:10 >> Yeah, similar to what I said after the game,
00:15 just in terms of I feel like we did have an opportunity,
00:18 opportunity to really take the lead and control the game.
00:23 And so for me, that still hurts, just thinking about that.
00:28 So, like I said, I still hurt for the guys that have been here.
00:32 The older guys, the coaches, our fan base, everybody, it sucks.
00:40 We're right there.
00:41 Once overtime, had an opportunity, and yeah, it sucks.
00:47 But I mean, that's the game that we play.
00:50 And you gotta find a way to sort of have it fuel you and
00:55 have that roll in the next year, with that taste in your mouth.
00:59 So, yeah.
01:02 >> Have you watched it back yet or is it kind of too fresh?
01:04 >> Yeah, I haven't watched it yet.
01:06 So it's just all the emotions and stuff from the season and
01:10 just show my love to my guys, my teammates.
01:14 That's where my focus has been.
01:16 But when the time is right, I'll watch it.
01:19 >> Is there a play that sticks out to you,
01:22 a regret that you have about a play that possibly was there that
01:27 guys just couldn't be there?
01:29 >> I mean, there's things that happen throughout the game,
01:34 like second half, I just wish we would have been on.
01:37 The opportunities that we had with their turnovers or
01:41 our defense getting stops.
01:43 I just keep thinking about those three and outs that we had and
01:46 one opportunity we had to go take control of the game.
01:50 And so there's a couple plays where I think I would have hit BA on some of the reads.
01:58 But outside of that, it's just a culmination of the whole game.
02:02 You could have done a million things, right?
02:04 And so at the end of the day, it's a team sport, man.
02:07 And as a team, I think we all could have done a little bit better in some areas and
02:13 stuff, but we win and lose together.
02:16 >> You mentioned the Chiefs playing man to man coverage, a lot more man to man
02:20 coverage than you were expecting.
02:22 Was that one of the reasons why maybe the throws to BA and
02:26 throws to Debo were not as prevalent as they normally are?
02:33 >> Yeah, I think just whatever our play call was, and then obviously them playing
02:38 man, maybe it wasn't something that we just weren't expecting a whole lot of.
02:42 And to credit to the Chiefs secondary,
02:45 they did a good job with getting hands on our guys pretty early and
02:49 really just being sticky and being right on them.
02:52 So that's just sort of how it goes.
02:54 I think we all have to learn from it and understand what we can do better next time.
02:58 Cuz I feel like teams will obviously watch it and
03:00 try to have that kind of plan for the next season.
03:03 So that's just sort of how it went.
03:05 We gotta learn from it.
03:06 But I still feel like regardless, we still had opportunities to win the game
03:10 outside of them just playing man coverage.
03:13 But they did it well and it's a credit to them.
03:15 >> [INAUDIBLE] >> On that play,
03:18 were you supposed to go to Juwan there or
03:21 if you had known that McDuffie could be coming, should you have gone to IU?
03:27 >> Yeah, I mean, regardless, I'm supposed to read it inside out.
03:31 JJ was hot and I feel like going to him in a man to man situation is sort of
03:37 what I was thinking.
03:38 But with him blitzing, I think there was an opportunity for me to hit BA there.
03:43 And that's something I have to learn from and be real with myself about.
03:47 I told BA obviously, man, I wish I would have hit you there,
03:51 at least attempted to go to you.
03:52 But I mean, at practice, I've hit the outside slant a million times in that
03:57 coverage, cover zero and having our receiver win outside.
04:01 And obviously, I trusted JJ to win a contested ball like it was gonna be.
04:06 So this is what happened in the moment.
04:09 >> They had free runners coming to the game.
04:13 I know sometimes that's just the numbers game, you can't get enough blockers on.
04:16 But were there communications issues at all with protection or
04:18 anything that you could send to the team?
04:21 >> I mean, yeah, there were some things, but that's just the game of football, man.
04:25 Defenses do a good job with disguising things or
04:27 dialing things up and catching us off guard.
04:29 I feel like everybody's mindset and
04:31 the offense going into the game was where it needed to be.
04:34 We're prepared, but the Chiefs did a good job of scheming things up and,
04:39 like I said, catching us off guard at some points.
04:41 And that's part of the game, that's football.
04:43 So for me to have to move around and extend stuff if there's a guy up the middle or
04:48 whatever, that's part of it.
04:49 Obviously, you don't want that to be the case all the time, but
04:52 they did a good job, but that's just how it went.
04:56 >> So on the third and four that you're talking about, I mean,
05:01 this guy's designing fast, but you're saying you still could have made a quicker
05:05 decision, is that right?
05:06 >> Different third and four.
05:07 >> I think that was a different, are you talking about the-
05:09 >> I'm sorry.
05:10 >> Yeah, no, different ones.
05:11 >> My bad, my bad.
05:12 >> That one.
05:14 >> Yeah, third and four, the nine, and overtime.
05:17 >> Yeah, I mean, that one, yeah, that was a tough situation there.
05:21 Yeah, I don't know if I could have made a quicker decision or not.
05:26 I was trying to be safe with the ball and obviously JJ opened up, but
05:31 I didn't know where the corner was at by the time I released the ball.
05:33 And I was trying to be safe and smart with it and
05:36 knew that we can get a field goal in the next down.
05:38 So that's where my mindset was at.
05:40 But just throughout the game before that,
05:41 there's some other plays where it happens and you gotta make a play.
05:45 So that's what I meant by that.
05:46 >> Were you aware of the new overtime rules in the moment that the Chiefs were
05:49 gonna get the ball back no matter what?
05:50 Were you under the impression you were driving down for the win potentially?
05:53 >> No, I knew.
05:54 Before that, I asked Greasy on the sideline before we went into overtime,
05:58 like, hey, just to clarify, what are the rules?
06:00 And he goes, it's the playoffs.
06:01 So he explained the rules to me and everything.
06:03 So I had an understanding of it.
06:05 >> Do you have to- >> Brock,
06:06 when you woke up Monday morning, what was the first thing you thought of?
06:09 >> Obviously the game, us, how we came up short.
06:15 Obviously it's a sucky feeling, but I also am trying to have the perspective of,
06:21 all right, this is happening for a reason.
06:25 It's all part of all of our stories and stuff and our testimonies.
06:28 So that's sort of the hope that I have for it.
06:31 And more than anything, just being grateful for the kind of season that we had
06:35 with the guys in this locker room, this team, this organization.
06:37 We got to the Super Bowl, we went to overtime, we fell short of it.
06:42 It sucks.
06:43 We wanted it, we gave our all this year.
06:46 But man, I had the opportunity to do it with some really good people, and
06:50 I'm thankful for that.
06:50 >> What kind of maintenance do you have to do on your arm this offseason, Brock?
06:54 And obviously it's gonna be, you'll have more time, I guess, to prepare for
06:57 this kind of season since you're not going to hold rehab like last year.
07:01 >> Yeah, it'll be nice to sort of work on my craft, get a real legit offseason in.
07:07 Obviously last year, season ended, surgery, rehab, trying to get back for
07:12 the season.
07:12 So it was just all so fast and going to minimum miles an hour.
07:15 So for me to be able to take a step away for a little bit and
07:18 then I think just work on my mobility.
07:22 Obviously, continuing with my arm strength and all that will be huge for me.
07:26 So I'm excited to get better, like truly get better at my craft.
07:30 >> Mike, you've talked about how important it is for you to play well for
07:33 the better.
07:33 Did you have any conversations with Coach Brown,
07:37 Coach Brown, the team?
07:39 >> After the game?
07:40 Yeah, I mean, I just talked to him and more than anything, I was just telling him,
07:43 I thank you for what you've done for the team, for myself, for this organization.
07:48 And that I'm sorry, we couldn't get it done because I wanted it so bad for them.
07:54 They put so much time into this league and
07:56 to get this kind of opportunity playing the Super Bowl is rare.
08:00 And like I said before, I got hurt for those guys, man.
08:02 You want it so bad for those kind of guys.
08:04 And so more than anything, I was just telling him I'm sorry and
08:08 I pray that we have an opportunity again together to get back and finish it.
08:13 >> Brock, when you say you're excited about the opportunity to get better at your
08:17 craft this offseason, what are you referring to?
08:19 What area do you think that you can make strides in?
08:23 >> I mean, I think just physically with, I think my arm strength, and
08:28 I always say mobility, but really my shoulder mobility, my hips.
08:32 Just being able to move better.
08:34 And I feel like my rookie year I was pretty tight.
08:38 And then I had surgery, so my focus was on my arm.
08:41 So I feel like I could just be a little bit more elusive and stuff and
08:43 how I move, and that's something that I wanna get better at.
08:46 And then just mentally within the playbook, man, I think year after year,
08:50 getting better and more comfortable with the system and how Kyle is calling things.
08:54 And go back on film and look at situations where I can learn from and
08:59 be better in situational football.
09:00 So those are all things you can add up and hopefully I can get better at.
09:04 >> Do you think the running part of it, like you showed against the Lions,
09:07 do you think that can become more of a kind of one of your calling cards or
09:11 something that you can do more successfully next season?
09:14 >> We'll see.
09:14 I mean, obviously I'm gonna continue to work at my explosiveness and speed.
09:18 I've always done that.
09:19 And so if that becomes part of the game, so be it.
09:23 But I'm a quarterback.
09:25 I got playmakers around me to go make plays and do all those things.
09:28 So more than anything, I wanna perfect my, or
09:32 go after the craft of being a good quarterback.
09:35 So that's first and foremost.
09:37 >> What would be your plan just between now and OTAs?
09:39 Like where will you be in the work and all that kind of stuff?
09:42 >> I'll be around here for the most part.
