John Lynch dropped a hint about the San Francisco 49ers' next defensive coordinator Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Transcript
00:00 John Lynch was asked about the defensive coordinator search and he said some things he said
00:05 They want to I wrote it down. Hold on
00:08 He said that they are looking for a defensive coordinator that won't make wholesale changes
00:18 They want to be true to who they are on defense, but they are gonna make some tweaks. That's what he said
00:24 They're going to have small changes on defense
00:28 But that's it great idea of who we're going to be continue to be
00:33 Changes and tweaks we want to make
00:36 We're staying true to who we are. That's what he said. So
00:41 sounds to me like
00:44 They're talking to Brandon Staley. We know that
00:46 Brandon Staley was the defensive coordinator for the Rams for one year
00:50 So I could see why the Niners would be interested the Rams and the Niners are awfully similar
00:54 If Sean McVay worked with him and had success that maybe Kyle Shanahan could too
00:58 So he's been a defensive coordinator for one year had a great defense that year. It was a 3-4 though
01:03 Brandon Staley is a Vic Fangio disciple
01:09 He was a nobody at John Carroll University and then Vic Fangio discovered him and made him a linebacker coach for
01:17 the Bears the Bears
01:21 then
01:23 Then he became a defensive coordinator ran Fangio system
01:27 You know that system the Niners used to run it with Jim Harbaugh a 3-4 like a one gap 3-4
01:32 Then he went to the Chargers brought it there
01:35 Defense was terrible. He got fired. So we know the Niners have interviewed Brandon Staley
01:41 Based on what John Lynch said today, I'm guessing the interview went something like hey Brandon
01:47 We like you I guess
01:51 But you know that scheme you have that defensive scheme the 3-4 the Fangio thing. We don't want that
01:56 So if you want to we would love you to coach for us, but you have to do what Wilkes did last year and
02:03 You know, you can make little tiny tweaks
02:08 but if you do anything too different Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are not gonna be happy and
02:13 They essentially run this defense
02:18 so you got to find a way to get them to buy in and
02:21 They didn't buy into Steve Wilkes
02:24 So I
02:27 Don't know it seems like they're trying to get Brandon Staley to be the new version of Wilkes which sounds like a terrible idea
02:34 Brandon Staley is a loser
02:37 he's not a particularly decorated coach and
02:41 His players didn't seem like him
02:44 and now you're telling him a
02:48 Succeed where Steve Wilkes failed and again Steve Wilkes who was put in this impossible situation
02:53 Who the team essentially said this was a terrible fit couldn't get it done
02:57 Just was the wrong fit gave up 17 and a half points a game
02:59 I think they should just go with Nick Sorenson. I don't know the first thing about Nick Sorenson, but he's on the team
03:08 He's been with them for a few years
03:10 D'Amico Ryan's brought him here. He was the past game coordinator. Is there past defense great? No
03:16 Coverage is pretty good
03:18 Past rush isn't great. It wasn't last year, but still bringing in Brandon Staley and asking him to run a wide nine
03:24 It's not gonna work
03:27 It'll be worse
03:28 Than the Steve Wilkes experience experiment. That's my prediction
03:31 But it sounds like that's what the Niners want and if Brandon Staley
03:36 Agrees
03:40 They'll probably hire him
03:44 Remember he was a linebacker coach, which is what the Niners want someone with that history and
03:47 I
03:50 Don't know I guess he was a head coach and the Niners like that too because Steve Wilkes was a head coach and Kyle
03:55 frankly isn't exactly a coach I
03:58 Don't know that's my prediction it's gonna be Brandon Staley of Brandon Staley sort of makes
04:03 The deal with the devil here like hey, yeah, you can coach the 49ers defense
04:08 But you can't coach your scheme and you and Kyle's gonna overrule you on plays and Kyle's gonna throw you under the bus
04:14 But it's old Nick Bosa and so a Fred Warner, but it's a great opportunity
04:17 But if you give up 18 and a half points per game, you might get fired
04:20 But it's a great opportunity
04:24 Gonna stay true to who they are with small tweaks
04:30 That doesn't seem like what tweak is Nick Sorenson gonna make he's been here for a while
04:35 You would keep things the same the way they are
04:37 I'm predicting Brandon Staley
04:41 And why hasn't it happened yet because they're asking Brandon Staley to bend over backwards to come to this team
04:45 All right, man, you can you can coach them, but you can't do XYZ
04:47 AFG AFB AC ABC. I don't know my ABCs
04:52 AFG where did that come from?
04:55 Did you guys get the same impression about the defensive coordinator that's the impression I got
05:01 You
05:03 (upbeat music)
05:05 (upbeat music)
