Analyzing what the San Francisco 49ers most likely will get in the NFL Draft and free agency.
Transcript
00:00 We said what we think they should take in free agency, the draft slash the draft.
00:05 Forget everything we said, because they're not going to do that.
00:07 They're not going to get a right tackle.
00:10 What they're going to do is they're going to, first of all, get a defense, an edge rusher.
00:14 They're going to get an edge rusher.
00:16 That's what they think the key to Nirvana and the Super Bowl and a happy life ever after
00:24 is yet another shlub at edge rusher or inside the defensive line.
00:32 Do you agree, Iggy?
00:34 Yeah, it's like their list of needs.
00:38 It's one defensive end.
00:40 And then number two is like way down on the piece of paper.
00:43 As long as they get that defensive end, they'll be fine.
00:45 And they'll address that either first thing in free agency or first thing in the draft.
00:49 No question.
00:50 Yeah.
00:51 They think it defensive end is is is the bees.
00:58 How well did that help them this year?
01:01 How they do in the Super Bowl defensive?
01:03 It's funny.
01:04 Patrick Mahomes has won three Super Bowls and the Chiefs have been called for zero holding
01:10 penalties in all three of them.
01:12 Some people feel like I don't know why invest so much in defensive line when the Chiefs
01:18 aren't going to get called for holding and you're not going to sack Patrick Mahomes.
01:21 It seems like a waste.
01:24 You might want to protect your quarterback.
01:26 I mean, there's something to be said for that.
01:29 I understand not really caring about protecting your quarterback if you don't really value
01:33 him.
01:34 But Brock Purdy is really good.
01:35 You want him to stick around for a long time, right?
01:38 You can win with Brock Purdy.
01:40 You can win with Brock Purdy.
01:41 And he's a lot better when he has time and space to throw than when he's running for
01:44 his life.
01:45 You can win a Super Bowl with Brock Purdy.
01:47 I don't know if you can win a Super Bowl with Kyle Shanahan, but you can win a Super
01:51 Bowl with Brock Purdy.
01:52 There is that.
01:54 There is that.
01:55 There is that.
01:56 So yeah, they'll take a D and they'll also take a linebacker.
01:59 Oh, absolutely.
02:00 Green line.
02:01 Yeah.
02:02 Yeah.
02:03 And again, why did they lose the Super Bowl defense?
02:07 Not the offense.
02:08 It was not.
02:09 No, the offense was great.
02:10 They, you know, they scored 48 points in that game.
02:13 Right.
02:14 Kyle, just you could.
02:15 Yeah.
02:16 Yeah.
02:17 Yeah.
02:18 Yeah.
02:19 You know who else is an outside chance they'll take running back.
02:22 They love running backs.
02:24 Right.
02:25 And then they don't play them.
02:27 They get running backs and they're good.
02:30 Poor guy, Ty Davis Price, that he never even played the guy and they got rid of him.
02:34 But they get really good running backs.
02:36 And when Christian McCaffrey feels like he needs to take 10 seconds of a break to breathe,
02:42 they'll bring one of these poor guys in.
02:44 He'll run one play and then he's gone for the rest of the game.
02:47 So yes, they need more running backs.
02:48 That's what they think.
02:49 I really hope they bring in another running back because they haven't done it in a while
02:53 and they've had so much success.
02:56 It's unbelievable.
02:57 That's a good one.
02:58 Yeah.
02:59 That's what they're going to do.
03:00 What do you think they'll do at quarterback?
03:02 Do you think they'll bring back Sam Donald?
03:04 Do you think they'll listen to our advice on that one position?
03:08 You say he's a free agent.
03:11 Yeah.
03:13 I can hear.
03:16 Okay.
03:17 I can hear Kyle's saying both things, i.e. talking out of both sides of his mouth.
03:22 I can hear him saying, we brought Sam back.
03:25 We just thought he did such a great job.
03:27 You know, he was ready.
03:29 He was this and that.
03:30 I didn't.
03:31 The poor guy never got to play hardly.
03:33 Or we could hear him say, we're moving in a different direction.
03:38 We're going in a different direction and we're going to get, you know, Joe Schmutz, who we
03:43 think is really good.
03:44 I don't know.
03:46 They don't value what we value.
03:50 They don't value what we value.
03:52 Let me ask you this way.
03:53 Do you think Kyle Shanahan worked with Sam Donald for a year and decided I was wrong
04:00 about this guy stinks?
04:01 Let's move on and get someone else.
04:03 Or do you think Kyle Shanahan thinks the Sam Donald guy is pretty good.
04:08 I was right about Sam.
04:09 And if he ever has to play a few games, also everyone.
04:13 Yeah, I'm going to put it back on you.
04:16 I don't think he worked with Sam Donald.
04:19 I think the other guy greasy work with Sam Don.
04:22 I don't think he works with the quarterbacks.
04:26 He works with his play.
04:28 He is a doodler.
04:30 He's a doodler and a grinder.
04:32 He sees in the play sheet.
04:34 And as far as the quarterback, he didn't even know, in spite of gaslighting us, how good
04:39 Proc Purdy was.
04:40 He had this guy.
04:41 He had King David.
04:42 He had King Arthur hanging around.
04:46 He had no idea.
04:47 He was out of options.
04:48 He will put this kid in.
04:49 And he turned out to be really good.
04:51 I don't think he's that good of a judge of quarterbacks.
04:54 So whether he says Sam Donald is good or not, I'm not necessarily trusting the judgment.
05:00 Right.
05:01 I mean, the person who brings in the next quarterback who makes this decision could
05:04 be Brian greasy.
05:05 He could say, Kyle, Sam Donald's no good.
05:08 I want this guy.
05:09 Yeah, perhaps.
05:11 Yeah.
05:12 And I don't know what their relationship is.
05:13 I don't know how they get along.
05:15 I don't know if Brian Greasy is good.
05:19 No, I guess he did well with identifying Brock Purdy.
05:24 But let's see if he can do it again.
05:27 James Wilson says, great show.
05:29 Thank you, James.
05:32 Joe Crowell says, good afternoon, gentlemen.
05:34 Great show as always.
05:35 Mr. Cone, do you have any memories or observations about Tom Rathman?
05:39 Absolutely.
05:40 I'm a hell of a fullback.
05:45 Let me say that again.
05:46 A hell of a fullback.
05:48 Better than the guy they have now.
05:51 If they in the past, if you needed a few yards, let's say it was the end of an overtime in
05:56 the Super Bowl and you had third and four in the past, you'd give the ball to the fullback,
06:02 not to little Christian McCaffrey.
06:04 You give it to the fullback.
06:06 Maybe he'd get two or three yards and then you'd give it to him again.
06:10 And that was Tom Rathman.
06:12 Plus, he could catch the ball.
06:14 OK, I've never I've never met you, Shaq.
06:18 So I have no opinion on his personality.
06:20 In addition, Tom Rathman is a really, really nice man.
06:24 And you sat next to him at a game this season and you found him to be quite enjoyable, right?
06:30 I thought he was extremely enjoyable.
06:31 And I asked him if he was better than Kyle Uschek and he was very deferential.
06:34 And said, oh, no, Uschek was much more athletic than he was.
06:38 But I'm looking at Rathman.
06:39 I mean, he really gave him the ball a lot.
06:42 He had in in nineteen eighty eight, he had eight hundred yards from scrimmage in nineteen
06:46 eighty nine, he had nine hundred yards from scrimmage like Uschek can't compete with that.
06:51 No, he's a better player than Uschek.
06:54 And used, you know, his thing, Kyle likes to think he has a fullback.
06:59 Yeah, fullback.
07:00 He used him like a fullback.
07:03 He's a sort of a blocker and a decoy.
07:05 He's a deke.
07:06 He's a fullback.
07:07 He's a deke fullback.
07:08 That's so true.
07:09 I like to say that he's like a he goes in motion.
07:13 He's a deke fullback.
07:14 He goes in motion.
07:15 Oh, no.
07:16 All eyes on Kyle Uschek.
07:17 No, he's a deke.
07:18 He's a deke fullback.
07:25 All right.
07:26 Well, you know, I, I, William, I love Boston.
07:29 I think in a way it's San Francisco in the east.
07:32 I do.
07:34 Why?
07:35 Small, a smaller city.
07:38 The beautiful parts are beautiful, very sophisticated, that kind of thing.
07:44 I haven't spent much time that we went there that one time about 12 years ago.
07:47 I think it's beautiful.
07:50 (upbeat music)
