00:00 What do the 49ers need?
00:02 Yeah, free agency in the draft.
00:04 So here's what Iggy and I are going to do.
00:06 We're going to talk about what they need.
00:08 And then, of course, they're going to ignore what they need
00:10 and do what they want to do.
00:12 But I have three areas.
00:14 May I say what the three areas are?
00:16 OK, first of all.
00:20 They need a good right tackle.
00:24 I don't want to put down the guy now, McKivitt's.
00:26 No, I want to put him down.
00:29 He's tried hard.
00:30 He's apparently, you know, I love I love offensive linemen.
00:33 I think they could upgrade the position.
00:36 And no, not only could I think they should upgrade the position.
00:39 It could protect the quarterback a little.
00:42 They could protect the quarterback a little better.
00:44 And they generally run to the left.
00:46 Then it would be nice if they had the option to run more to the right.
00:49 So that's number one.
00:50 I think everyone agrees, except, of course, for Kyle.
00:54 But everyone agrees probably an upgrade over there.
00:57 Number two would be they need a backup quarterback.
01:02 It's become a very important position in the NFL.
01:06 Now they got Sam Darnold, but he's a free agent, right?
01:10 Iggy? Yeah. And he's not setting the world on fire,
01:14 though we'll come back in a minute to who they could get,
01:18 because we have ideas for backup quarterback.
01:20 And the third, I think they need a new kicker.
01:23 I'm sorry, Moody.
01:26 I don't mean I never met you have a nice life.
01:29 I don't think with all the heartache and anxiety a head coach has,
01:35 he needs to worry if this guy's going to miss a P.A.T.
01:38 in the Super Bowl.
01:39 I would get a new guy.
01:41 So first of all, do you agree with me?
01:43 And then let's go over, if you do some backup quarterbacks.
01:47 I agree. I mean, the Niners just lost the Super Bowl in overtime by three points.
01:52 Their margin is very small.
01:55 They don't need to overhaul anything.
01:56 They're not look, they don't have a bunch of needs.
01:58 A backup quarterback is one of them.
01:59 Kickers, definitely one of them.
02:01 Jake Moody, go figure it out on a team that has no aspirations.
02:05 And the Niners needed a kicker who's ready to go for the playoffs.
02:08 Backup quarterbacks, they could get.
02:10 I mean, look what the Browns did.
02:13 Watson went down and you thought, well, that team's dead.
02:15 But then they won a lot of games with their backup quarterback.
02:19 They didn't win a playoff game with Joe Flacco, but still, he made.
02:24 They won a lot of games.
02:26 They stayed afloat with him.
02:26 And then the same thing with the Bengals.
02:28 They what they lost Joe Burrow.
02:29 Everyone thought that team's dead.
02:31 They won a lot of games with Jake Browning.
02:33 The Niners need someone like that.
02:34 I don't think Sam Darnold is that guy, but I think they should be able to find him.
02:38 Browning would be one.
02:40 Flacco would be another.
02:41 Honestly, either one would probably be cheap and a good option for the Niners.
02:43 Yeah, if Flacco still wants to play football, I think he'd be
02:47 a valuable guy in the room.
02:50 Remember the quarterback room, how he used to talk about it?
02:53 And he's a good he still can throw.
02:55 He's a good quarterback.
02:56 But the kid Browning, he's like Brock Purdy.
03:00 He wasn't even drafted. Right.
03:02 He's Washington.
03:03 He went to Washington undrafted.
03:04 He has a great arm.
03:05 He did very nice things with Cincinnati.
03:09 I would love to see.
03:10 And he's a free agent.
03:11 Yeah, I'd love to see him as the backup quarterback.
03:14 I mean, I'm not saying that Brock Purdy is going to get hurt.
03:17 He was great this season.
03:19 But I think you need to have somebody like that just in case.
03:23 Yeah, they could also draft someone if they if there's someone they like
03:27 and they're convicted in, they could do that.
03:30 But these are two excellent options, and I think they got to get this right.
03:34 What they shouldn't do is try to bring in some reclamation project,
03:38 some guy who's failed that they'll develop and improve.
03:41 They don't do that on this team.
03:43 They tried that with Lance.
03:45 They tried it with Darnold.
03:47 Just get a guy who is cheap and can
03:50 function right away in your system, a system guy.
03:53 I love it.
03:55 Maybe even a game manager system guy, maybe even a game manager system guy.
04:00 I got another position for us.
04:03 Tight end.
04:05 Ah, now you're using your noodle tight in.
04:09 Because, look, Cato's great.
04:13 He's 30 and they got no one behind him and he's not getting better.
04:19 I totally agree.
04:20 Now, didn't they draft a guy tight end, but he never played in work?
04:24 Yeah, well, he be he's terrible.
04:27 That's awful.
04:27 So we we can write him off.
04:29 I think so.
04:31 OK, all right.
04:32 If he gives them anything, you got to be surprised.
04:34 OK, then they should probably have gotten them.
04:37 Sorry.
04:38 It OK.
04:39 Then you got to draft the tight end to or, you know, get one in free agency.
04:43 So those are four positions.
04:46 This is a team that's loaded.
04:48 We know that the team that's loaded, but they could improve in four places at least.
04:55 And yeah, let's go back to offensive tackle for a second.
04:57 Colton McKibbitz did a good job this year.
05:01 He exceeded expectations.
05:02 He improved as the season went on.
05:04 He's a good run blocker, although they don't run that direction very much.
05:08 He did give up 13 sacks.
05:10 That's a lot.
05:11 And I don't think you could expect him to do much better.
05:14 It's a tough position.
05:16 He doesn't make that much money.
05:17 They should probably find another guy to at least compete with him.
05:21 Sure, I love it.
05:23 And if the other guy is better, he could be we're not getting him off the team.
05:26 There are certain people I would like to see off the team.
05:29 Like Eric Armstead, I'd like to see him off the team.
05:32 I don't feel the way about McKibbitz.
05:34 Well, I'd like on the team.
05:36 Yeah, I mean, you could be on the bus.
05:39 Yeah. Yeah, that's true.
05:41 All right. Just a second.
05:43 Bill Kennedy says really like almost all your guests.
05:47 But love your dad.
05:48 Grew up on dad, Ira and Glenn is the green sheet still green.
05:51 How did you get the nickname, Iggy?
05:54 The green sheet is still green for a while.
05:57 It wasn't Iggy.
05:59 Do we do you want to do the Iggy thing again?
06:01 It's it's in a lot of the old broadcasts.
06:04 I can do it in 10 seconds.
06:07 OK, I have older brother's half.
06:09 He's my half brother.
06:11 He's 12 years older than me.
06:13 When I was born, I was 13.
06:14 I was buying language.
06:15 I could didn't really have it yet. I would say Iggy a lot.
06:18 So you call me.
06:20 You made it official.
06:21 What? Not in Sweden is my audio.
06:24 It went out for a little bit. Now you're back.
06:28 Mojo McCleary says, Lowell, what was it like covering Russ Francis?
06:31 First of all, thank you for the question.
06:35 Russ, poor guy died recently in a plane crash.
06:39 He's one of the favorite guys I ever covered in my life.
06:43 I found him endlessly fascinating, brilliant, humorous, deep,
06:50 an individual.
06:53 I just love covering him, and I'll tell you another thing.
06:56 I love covering tight ends.
06:58 They're extreme individualists.
07:01 They're so interesting.
07:03 Russ, Charlie Young, Brent Jones.
07:05 Wow. What a what a collection of guys.
07:10 I can't say anything about criticals.
07:12 I've never met him.
07:13 But those three come.
07:15 Vernon Davis guy was is a painter and a good painter.
07:19 And he brought some of his art to the practice facility one time for me to see.
07:23 So, yes, Russ is one of my all time favorite guys.
07:27 I have poor guys gone.
07:30 I had deep affection for him.
