Wilcox discusses the changing demands of coaching

00:00 You talked a little bit about you have more plates to spend now.
00:03 Can you talk about how much that has changed and how you sort of adapted to all that?
00:09 Yeah, I mean the job itself, just my role in the program has changed significantly in the last
00:15 seven years and really the last three and a half to four years just with how college football has
00:23 Spell out the differences.
00:25 Well, roster management, recruiting, the element of fundraising for NIL which is a big deal and I
00:34 want to continue to do that. We've had some really, we've had some amazing people step up
00:40 and support our collective and we need to continue to build on that because NIL is a critical,
00:47 critical component, probably the number one component in determining the longevity and
00:53 success in the program as college football sits right now. And so I want to continue to do that.
00:59 So spending a lot of time with folks who support the program and encouraging them and educating
01:04 them on what NIL is and how it works and what our peers are doing across the country. And so that's
01:11 been big. And as I mentioned in the roster management, transfer portal and the movement
01:17 of players, how you structure the program because of, you know, potential to have 30 or 40 new
01:23 players in a given year. So what is your off-season program like systematically on offense, defense,
01:29 and special teams? How are you teaching those? How quickly can we get players new to the program
01:34 integrated into the program? And so I think there's just, you know, the old days it was,
01:40 you know, the recruiting calendar was traditional in a sense and you knew who's going to be on the
01:45 team for the next, you know, four or five years. So you had, you know, you're looking down the
01:53 road quite a bit further and able to look down the road because there's more stability
01:58 in the rosters across college football. And now it's much more short-term and when it comes to
02:06 the actual football part. And then again, this added element of NIL and fundraising, which I'm
02:12 eager and happy to do and want to continue to do. You seem to be embracing all these new. Yeah,
02:17 I think you have to. I mean, if you don't, probably need a different job. And so it's,
02:22 are there challenges? Absolutely. It's a challenging time. And if you don't embrace
02:27 those challenges, then I guess you can sit around and complain about it. But my job is to help our
02:33 team be successful and I got to do whatever I can do to support the players and grow the program and
02:41 improve and win games. And that's my role. And I take that role very seriously. And if
02:46 If I didn't like that, then I wouldn't do it.
