Transcript
00:00 From 44th Street in Camelback, this is the Arizona Daily Mix.
00:05 And it all starts right now.
00:08 Welcome to the Arizona Daily Mix. I am Brad Perry.
00:18 And I'm Lexi Romano.
00:19 Okay, we've got a show for you today because we are celebrating National Margarita Day with Los Sombreros.
00:26 Yum!
00:27 So, yeah, they're going to show us how to make, I guess, the proper margarita, as he said.
00:32 What we're doing, actually, is we're making their version of a Cadillac.
00:37 They call it the Steve-arita.
00:39 But, yeah, you see that Grand Marnier there? You're going to do a little float on top.
00:43 Ooh, all right.
00:44 I'm ready for it. It's 5 o'clock somewhere, right, Brad?
00:47 Yeah.
00:48 All right, also, once we finish those margs, then we're going to kick into gear with the folks at Eos Fitness.
00:53 This is great, keeping us in shape.
00:55 We're using the language margs.
00:57 Is that the new slang?
00:59 It's the new lingo. We've got to shorten everything.
01:01 We're going to shorten everything.
01:02 Yeah. Margarita is the old school way.
01:05 Right, so now we just shorten everything.
01:06 All right, then.
01:07 "Be tame."
01:09 "Sa" is "fa" here.
01:12 "Spring training." I was trimming it. See, that's what I'm saying.
01:14 I was like, "Brad, are you having a stroke?"
01:16 No, but I was just trimming because we're supposed to trim the words now.
01:20 So that's what I was trying to do here.
01:21 Spring training season is finally here in the Valley, and we're getting a peek at what you can expect to see at Sloan Park, home of my Cubbies.
01:29 Nice.
01:30 So, yes, north side.
01:32 And you were out there this morning, yeah?
01:34 Yes, very early. So, very early to talk with them because--
01:37 Is this footage from this morning?
01:38 Yes, it is.
01:39 It's still dark outside.
01:40 It's still dark outside. I guess it is.
01:41 Basically, it could have been last night.
01:43 Yeah, we could have--last night, I could have stayed up.
01:45 Yeah, so we were, but, yeah, we're going to talk spring training, which is going to be good.
01:48 Very cool. Do you go to all the games?
01:50 No.
01:51 You know, it's kind of interesting now that--and maybe it's an age, but I love listening to baseball on the radio like my grandparents used to do.
02:01 Brad! You sit in your old rocking chair, turn on the radio.
02:06 I get in the car.
02:07 Oh, do you?
02:08 I get in the car and I'll drive for a little bit and listen to the baseball game.
02:11 Really? Okay.
02:12 Yeah, I don't know. It's just something that I will eventually get home and turn it on, but I don't know. It's just like--
02:16 Do you have an old school transistor radio?
02:19 I think I might go get one. Ooh, I like that. Maybe I'll get one and have one, but yeah, for some reason now I do.
02:24 But I'll probably go out to a couple of spring training games.
02:26 Yeah, for sure.
02:27 Yeah, definitely, and pace myself when you're out there. That's the big part about it.
02:31 Yes, I like that, too.
02:32 One thing that's very paceful, and that is pacing. Did I say that? Pacing. Getting done. Slowly.
02:37 I thought you meant like peaceful.
02:38 Peaceful. But I'll say, your bathroom. We were just talking about this.
02:42 Oh my gosh, Brad. I can't. Okay, so let me tell you guys the story.
02:46 So whenever you do home renovations, you always assume that it's going to take a little bit longer than what they quote, right?
02:53 They told us two weeks. I was like, "No, it'll be at least three, maybe a little bit more."
02:58 It's been a month, and we are still working with one toilet. We have no sinks. We have to brush our teeth in the kitchen sink.
03:06 So it has been-- We got the walls.
03:08 We got the walls back up. They put the walls back up. Thank goodness.
03:11 That's good.
03:12 So now, you and I don't have to like peek at each other while-- Thank goodness. Yes, the walls are back.
03:16 But something so hilarious was that the guys were out this week.
03:21 Because we're getting new tile, too.
03:23 So they ripped up all the old tile, and not only did they find out that there was water damage in the floor,
03:29 so now they're having to redo all of that.
03:32 But guess what is hilarious? So they broke up all the tile right up until the hallway, and the whole place is tiled.
03:38 We have tile all in our kitchen and our living room. But when they got all the way up to the tile in the hallway,
03:44 they were like, "Why is this so low? Like where the subfloors are, why is this so low?"
03:49 Because there are two layers of tile.
03:52 So whoever was in there before us-- We live in an older condo. It was built in 1987.
03:56 And they put tile on top of tile.
03:59 Oh, my gosh.
04:00 And in the bedrooms, there was carpet when we moved in. So there was carpet on top of tile on top of tile.
04:04 That's crazy.
04:06 So not only now do they have to put in new subfloors, because the floors were warped from the water,
04:13 now they have to put in risers to get it up to the same height as the tile on top of tile.
04:18 I'm just going to ask this. Why are builders or people lazy in the way of doing that?
04:23 Because actually, I had my roof just redone.
04:27 Oh, did you?
04:28 Guess how many layers of roofing was on there?
04:32 No. I'm going to go three.
04:34 Yep.
04:35 Three?
04:36 Three.
04:37 Three. They had to shave off three.
04:38 Is that safe?
04:39 No. It's like against the law and everything. We were fighting it out.
04:41 That doesn't seem like it would be--
04:43 I'm so glad no one came out and did an inspection on the house because it would be not up to code.
04:48 But why are people so lazy if they will just paint-- Like the tile.
04:52 I know.
04:53 Why did they just take it up and just--
04:54 I know. So the condo that we have, it was definitely like a handyman special, like a DIY kind of a thing.
05:00 Like the people-- Not the people we bought it from, but the people before them did all kinds of wacky things.
05:06 There are weird drawers that don't open and things that like there's extra space behind things that you're like, "Wait, why is there--"
05:14 A Frank Lloyd Wright house.
05:16 Sure.
05:17 Because that's what Frank Lloyd Wright would do. He would make like rooms out of rooms out of rooms out of rooms.
05:20 Sure.
05:21 That's what you can say.
05:22 Yes.
05:23 That's probably who would get your house.
05:24 Our kitchen is a Frank Lloyd Wright kitchen because there are drawers that don't open.
05:28 Yeah.
05:29 And then there are other drawers that you open them and there's the regular cabinet area and then there's more room behind it.
05:34 You're like, "What the heck?" It is wild.
05:37 That is crazy.
05:38 So yeah, it's fun.
05:39 Yeah, I don't know. But another part too, you're from-- Well, you're from California, but you lived in New York.
05:43 And you know how important it was in your home to have hardwood floors, wasn't it?
05:47 Oh yeah, every apartment I ever lived in.
05:49 Right, it was beautiful.
05:50 Well, like you said, out here when I first moved into my one house, they had these beautiful oak wood floors and they put carpet over it.
05:58 And so I was like, "What? This is beautiful."
06:01 So did you guys rip up the carpet?
06:02 Took it up and had it polished and everything was beautiful.
06:04 There you go. That is gorgeous.
06:05 It was amazing. So that was good.
06:07 All right, coming up, get your glasses ready because we are making a margarita or mar.
06:13 Am I saying that right?
06:14 A mar.
06:15 A mar.
06:16 When the mix returns or when the mix-- Yeah, come on back.
06:19 [music]
06:25 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored by Mos Sombreros.
06:33 All right, welcome back to the Arizona Daily Mix.
06:37 It's National Margarita Day or National Marv Day as we say.
06:41 And of course, we're not going to miss our chance for a morning marg.
06:45 Yeah, so whether you're on the rocks or frozen, one thing we can all agree on is that you can get some great margaritas at Los Sombreros.
06:53 And lucky for us, we have the owner, Kurt Riske, here to help us celebrate.
06:57 And Kurt, good morning to you.
06:58 Good morning.
06:59 So I like this. This is important because--
07:02 Because it's National Margarita Day.
07:04 I guess that's all I can say. That's all you can do.
07:06 Yeah, because we're celebrating.
07:07 It's a big day. It's a big day in the restaurant world, in the Mexican restaurant world, that's for sure.
07:13 So we're excited.
07:14 We're pumped.
07:15 All right, before we get to the margaritas, let's talk food because we want to make sure people have something on their stomachs as they come and enjoy margaritas.
07:20 So you've got two really cool dishes here. What do we have?
07:23 Yeah, so that one you just pointed at is the Pollo Con Espinacas.
07:26 It's chicken with the chipotle cream sauce and cilantro aioli.
07:29 I like to tell everyone it would be my last meal if I could choose it. That's how good it is.
07:34 Oh, wow. What is the sauce on that?
07:36 It's a chipotle cream sauce. It's so good.
07:38 Looks incredible.
07:39 People basically like to lick the bowl with that one.
07:41 And of course, healthy dish.
07:44 Oaxaca tomato salad.
07:46 So I have some of my wife's friends, they look at me and they're like, you know what?
07:50 When I see you, I just think tomato salad.
07:52 That is great.
07:55 That looks absolutely incredible.
07:56 Is that kind of like a take almost on like the traditional mozzarella with the tomatoes, the caprese salad?
08:02 Yeah, a little bit with the Mexican flair, with the jalapenos and the Oaxaca cheese and the vinaigrette.
08:07 Yeah.
08:08 So I like this.
08:09 OK, and what I love is that Margarita Day is celebrated at all your different locations because you guys have I feel like every week you're opening up new locations.
08:18 We just have the two. So, yeah, yeah.
08:20 We have Southern Adoption and Mesa and then Scottsdale, which is the flagship that's been there about since 2002.
08:26 And Lewis and Burroughs was established in 94.
08:29 And I know it's not my first time on the show.
08:32 So, yeah, I remember I actually opened it up as a server and my partner was bartending there for five years.
08:37 So we, you know, it's one big happy family.
08:40 I guess because every time you come there's like a drink special, there's food specials.
08:43 You guys do have a lot of cool stuff going on.
08:45 Yeah, for sure.
08:46 Well, speaking of drinks and specials, why don't we get to the name of the day, the name of the game, our margarita.
08:52 What do you make for us today?
08:53 Let's do it.
08:54 OK, well, we have our house margarita, which is only five dollars today for Margarita Day.
08:59 But I thought I'd make the Steve-arita.
09:01 So we'd like to pay a tribute to Steve.
09:03 Steve's our old bartender that I opened up the restaurant with.
09:06 He consulted us on what he called the perfect margarita.
09:10 And our fans happened to agree.
09:12 So we hear it's the best margarita all the time.
09:14 Let's do it.
09:15 Let's do it.
09:16 So to start, we're going to go Patron Silver.
09:19 OK, so what I like about this already is that you don't have a jigger.
09:22 You are just free pouring.
09:23 We're going to free pour.
09:24 This is great.
09:25 I'm here for it.
09:26 Right.
09:27 Yeah.
09:28 Then what's that?
09:29 Patron.
09:30 Patron.
09:31 Cintrange.
09:32 Then we have our fresh lime mix.
09:34 So this is important.
09:35 It's not the store-bought sweet and sour that you're going to just kind of gag on.
09:39 Yeah, you make it fresh.
09:40 This is homemade.
09:41 Delicious.
09:42 Then you've got to go fresh lime.
09:44 OK.
09:45 And this is important.
09:46 Also very important.
09:47 I mean, you have to have fresh lime with a grape.
09:49 Definitely.
09:50 There it is.
09:51 Look at that squirt.
09:52 How much is in there?
09:53 That's the whole half there.
09:54 Yeah.
09:55 Half a lime.
09:56 Beautiful.
09:57 And then what we like to do is add a little bit of a flair.
09:58 And we're going to invert the lime.
09:59 And then--
10:00 I know what that is.
10:01 I love doing that.
10:02 Yeah.
10:03 That's how you really get all that juice out right there.
10:06 This is how you do it.
10:07 And then you take your Grand Marnier floater.
10:10 Oh.
10:11 Put it right there in the bowl.
10:13 That is so cool.
10:14 A little extra.
10:15 Yeah.
10:16 You can shoot it.
10:17 You can dunk it.
10:18 Oh, my gosh.
10:19 That is so cool.
10:20 Most people dunk it.
10:21 Right.
10:22 Yes.
10:23 But yeah, we feel this is the perfect margarita.
10:24 Not too sweet.
10:25 Not too tart.
10:26 Has three different liquors in there.
10:27 So it packs a pretty good punch.
10:28 Oh, definitely.
10:29 That is definitely a good one.
10:30 What's on the rim of this guy?
10:31 Tahini.
10:32 Tahini.
10:33 Yes.
10:34 All right.
10:35 Changed it up a little bit.
10:36 Oh, my goodness.
10:37 Not your regular salt.
10:38 A tahini rim.
10:39 And this one is available at both locations, right?
10:40 Yes.
10:41 Yeah.
10:42 So today, it's only $8.
10:43 Typically, it's like $14 because it's such a premier margarita.
10:46 Nice.
10:47 And then we also have partnered with Celaya Tequila.
10:49 So they're going to be in-house today as well for National Margarita Day doing promotions
10:53 as well.
10:54 Nice.
10:55 And you were told these are former football players?
10:56 Yes.
10:57 Yeah.
10:58 So they retired.
10:59 And I guess when you retire as a former NFL guy, you're like, "Let's get to tequila."
11:03 Absolutely.
11:04 And any food specials with this?
11:07 Right now, we have happy hour from 2 to 6.
11:09 So the tomato salad's on happy hour for only $6.
11:13 Some of the tacos and some of the drinks.
11:15 But I think the star of the show is definitely going to be the margarita today.
11:19 Oh, yes.
11:20 Margarita.
11:21 And again, what is the price on them?
11:22 $5.
11:23 $2 if you want a flavor.
11:25 I did the strawberry because it looks cool.
11:27 And $8 is going to be for the Steve-arita.
11:29 And we got a special premiere with Celaya for $10 today.
11:33 Nice.
11:34 There it is.
11:35 All set.
11:36 $8 for that Steve-arita.
11:37 That is a steal.
11:38 There it is.
11:39 That's a steal.
11:40 That's a steal-arita.
11:41 Again, where can people find you guys?
11:42 Right off Thomas Road and Scottsdale and Scottsdale and then Southern and Dobson.
11:45 And then obviously we got Los Sombreros AZA is our handle.
11:50 And LosSombreros.com is our website.
11:52 Hey, thank you, Kurt.
11:53 Yeah, you're welcome.
11:54 I love it.
11:55 Thanks for having me.
11:56 We're going to be doing a few more months here when we are on the mix.
11:59 So when we come back, the folks at Eels are helping us be well without all the guilt that
12:03 we're feeling today.
12:04 So come on back.
12:14 The preceding portion of the Arizona Daily Mix was sponsored by Los Sombreros.
12:31 We are still in the month of love, which means love yourself by being or getting healthy
12:35 is important.
12:36 And here are some easy fit effective movements for nurturing both our body and mind.
12:43 This is Julia Amita from Eels Fitness.
12:45 How are you this morning?
12:46 I'm good.
12:47 How are you?
12:48 I'm doing good.
12:49 This is something I'm very into.
12:50 Of course, start the new year off with working on my body and working on my mind, getting
12:53 things ready.
12:54 And I love that you guys help people continue that because it's important for people to
12:59 work on both.
13:00 And that's what you guys do for them there.
13:02 And let's talk about Eels Fitness because you guys are like an all-purpose kind of facility,
13:07 aren't you?
13:08 Absolutely.
13:09 Not only can you come here to, you know, feel good.
13:11 It's a place to feel good, both body, mind, emotionally.
13:17 But we have so many different variety of things besides just the weights and bands.
13:22 We have personal trainers.
13:24 We have cryo labs.
13:25 We have sauna, massage, chairs.
13:29 So it's all-inclusive.
13:30 There you go.
13:31 And different classes that go on there, which is so much fun.
13:33 We got to mention where you're at because you came in from a long way.
13:36 But what's great is that the Eels are all over the valley and you're at the 303 and
13:41 Bell location in Surprise.
13:42 There you go.
13:43 But yeah, we have 31 locations throughout the valley.
13:46 And I love that people who are intimidated about going to the gym don't get intimidated
13:50 coming to Eels because you've got something for everybody and even some movements that
13:54 we're going to work on right now that people can do at home after coming in and working
13:58 at the gym, which is pretty good.
13:59 Yep.
14:00 Yep.
14:01 All right.
14:02 Let's get started.
14:03 What do you have?
14:04 All right.
14:05 So it's really important to breathe, you know, and to make sure that you warm up.
14:10 So some dynamic movements that you can do, especially if you sit in a chair all day long
14:15 behind a computer, a lot of people are really stressed, tight.
14:19 So you can just do some arm circles.
14:21 All right.
14:22 You know, do the other one.
14:25 So am I backstroking or am I one at a time?
14:27 Yeah, you can backstroke.
14:28 You can even do frontwards.
14:29 Okay.
14:30 Okay.
14:31 Even just doing simple twists.
14:33 All right.
14:34 Wow, these are pretty good.
14:36 These are super easy.
14:38 Anything that you can do, you know, when you have a moment to just stand up at your desk.
14:42 Yeah.
14:43 Even just raising your knees a little bit, getting just a little bit loose.
14:46 Yeah.
14:47 These are good.
14:48 Functional movements are really important.
14:50 So if you want to go ahead and pick up the weight, Rob.
14:52 Sure.
14:53 Got it.
14:54 You can do it.
14:55 I can.
14:56 I got it.
14:57 I got it.
14:58 I got it.
14:59 I got it.
15:00 All right.
15:01 Here we go.
15:02 All right.
15:03 Awesome.
15:04 See, that's the thing.
15:05 This is all fun too.
15:06 Yep.
15:07 So you want to stand with your feet about hip width distance apart.
15:10 You never want to lock your joints, so just kind of unlock them there.
15:13 Okay.
15:14 You can hold this right in front of you.
15:15 All right.
15:16 Awesome.
15:17 We're going to do a little squat.
15:18 Okay.
15:19 So some people are like, "Oh, well, I can't get all the way down."
15:21 And that's totally fine.
15:22 You want to listen to your body and do what your body can do.
15:24 Right.
15:25 Okay.
15:26 So you're going to pretend like you're going to sit in a chair right here.
15:28 Just sit?
15:29 Yep.
15:30 All right.
15:31 And then you're going to stand back up and just raise this up.
15:32 All right.
15:33 And I got a tall chair.
15:34 That's why.
15:35 Come back down.
15:36 Yeah.
15:37 And I think that's also something that's important too is that, you know, don't look at your
15:40 neighbor.
15:41 Look at yourself.
15:42 Yeah, absolutely.
15:43 You feel it.
15:44 And that's a good thing about it.
15:45 Yep.
15:46 And do you have anything that we should say to ourselves while we're doing this?
15:47 Like, "You got this.
15:48 It's all you."
15:49 Oh, absolutely.
15:50 Yes.
15:51 "The world is yours."
15:52 Yes.
15:53 "Don't worry about it."
15:54 Absolutely.
15:55 You don't want to, you know, be in competition with anybody else.
15:56 Right.
15:57 You just want to do what's going to be best for you and make yourself feel good.
15:59 I like that.
16:00 All right.
16:01 If you have some friends that you want to join with, you know, that can motivate and
16:04 encourage each other, that's a good one too.
16:06 Yeah.
16:07 OK.
16:08 You got another one for us?
16:09 Yep.
16:10 So we're going to do a lunge back.
16:11 OK.
16:12 Good.
16:13 And you're going to bring that back knee down.
16:14 And down.
16:15 And you're going to curl this.
16:16 OK.
16:17 Oh, curl.
16:18 All right.
16:19 Good.
16:20 That's as far as I'm going today.
16:21 Then stand back up.
16:22 All right.
16:23 And that's fine.
16:24 You do what your body allows you to do.
16:25 Exactly.
16:26 Body says, "That's it right there."
16:27 Yep.
16:28 Perfect.
16:29 But the body says, "You got this, Brad.
16:30 It's all you."
16:31 And then you can switch.
16:32 "Today is your day.
16:33 It's margarita day."
16:34 Yes.
16:35 "Three margaritas."
16:36 "And one margarita."
16:37 That's good.
16:38 Yeah.
16:39 It's very easy.
16:40 People can do this at home.
16:41 Absolutely.
16:42 You know, I noticed people too can grab something at home, like grab a water jug or something
16:50 like that to do if they don't have the weights there.
16:52 Absolutely.
16:53 You can get a gallon of milk.
16:54 That'll work.
16:55 That'll work.
16:56 Good.
16:57 OK.
16:58 One last one.
16:59 Anything for the body, the mind, anything we can do really quick?
17:00 So, you know, like I said, the breathing is really important.
17:04 We breathe automatically.
17:05 Yes.
17:06 But a lot of people don't breathe correctly.
17:09 So what you want to do is start in your belly.
17:12 OK.
17:13 And you want to close your eyes and relax.
17:15 And you want to fill your belly.
17:19 Fill your diaphragm.
17:20 Fill your lungs.
17:22 Hold it for about four seconds and then let it go and count to four as well.
17:31 And then you want to count to four again.
17:34 Oh, sorry.
17:35 But that's good.
17:36 That's good.
17:37 So a lot of people, actually it's called box breathing, and a lot of people that have trouble
17:41 sleeping at night, when you're lying there, you can practice your box breathing and it
17:45 will help you relax and fall asleep.
17:47 So there it is.
17:48 Yeah.
17:49 Thank you very much for coming in.
17:50 You're welcome.
17:51 Thank you.
17:52 Again, she's at the Eels at 303 and Bell.
17:53 Go check it out.
17:54 We have information right there on the screen.
17:56 Also you can head over to azdailymix.com to find out more about Eels and all the things
18:01 they have for you.
18:02 Yeah.
18:03 Come on down.
18:04 We're getting a sneak peek of the spring training facility over in Mesa.
18:08 You know that's where I'm going to.
18:10 Cubbies!
18:11 When the mix returns after this.
18:20 This is the Arizona Daily Mix.
18:23 Welcome to the second half of the Arizona Daily Mix.
18:31 Still to come, we're getting a look at this year's Indy Film Fest.
18:34 Yeah, that's going to be pretty cool to support the news.
18:37 That's all I'm up to.
18:38 I'm all about it.
18:39 Plus, if you're looking to head up north this weekend, we've got some great events for you
18:43 to check out while in Prescott.
18:45 Also we're going to be checking out a little camping that you can do.
18:49 Start getting ready for it.
18:50 Do you say Prescott?
18:51 Prescott.
18:52 Prescott?
18:53 I think so.
18:54 I say Prescott.
18:55 Prescott.
18:56 Prescott.
18:57 But some people say Prescott.
18:58 Or Prescott.
18:59 Prescott.
19:00 Or Prescott.
19:01 You say potato.
19:02 You say potato.
19:03 We say Prescott.
19:04 So, let's do some trending.
19:06 Brought to you by Gerber and Dulau.
19:07 Thank you Gerber and Dulau for sponsoring this part of the Arizona Daily Mix.
19:11 And the thing that we're talking about is that we're getting ready for spring training.
19:14 So it's going to be pretty awesome.
19:16 Now, have you gone to any of the spring training games since you got out here?
19:20 You know what, I went to one many a moon ago.
19:25 And I believe it was a Dodgers game.
19:27 Oh, you went to a Dodgers game?
19:29 I think so.
19:30 I believe so.
19:31 Yes.
19:32 Out in Camelback.
19:33 Camelback Ranch.
19:34 Yes.
19:35 That's where I was.
19:36 That's the Dodgers.
19:37 And so, a lot's going on here because we have the half billion dollar man here.
19:40 It's a big deal.
19:41 Playing for the Dodgers.
19:42 Are we getting him on the show?
19:44 I'm trying.
19:45 We're talking.
19:46 We're trying to work with some people.
19:47 Let's do it.
19:48 We're working with actually the beat writer for the LA Times.
19:52 Sports.
19:53 So, I know him personally.
19:56 Even if we get him in on the show, that would be cool.
19:58 Yes.
19:59 So we're working on that to get him.
20:00 I think he's supposed to come out here for spring training.
20:01 If not, we'll get him on the Zoom call.
20:05 But all the parts are ready to go.
20:06 They're excited.
20:07 I know a lot of people are excited.
20:08 It's very busy.
20:09 So, literally to the point where all the rental cars are gone.
20:13 No way.
20:14 Rental cars are out because of this.
20:15 I mean, it is a big thing here in the Valley.
20:18 People really show up for it.
20:19 People come out for it.
20:20 And now is the time.
20:21 Like, it's so beautiful outside.
20:23 The last couple days have just been so gorgeous.
20:25 Yesterday, beautiful.
20:26 It's going to be a great weekend for, of course, opening day.
20:30 And I went out to, of course, MLB's spring training this morning and got to see what
20:38 the Cubs have planned for this year's spring training.
20:41 Take a look.
20:42 All right.
20:43 Well, it's that time of year.
20:46 Spring training in the Valley.
20:47 And I'm very excited to be here at Sloan Park where the Cubs play.
20:51 Yes, my Northside team.
20:53 Guys, I'm sorry.
20:54 That's why I'm here.
20:55 I'm with Justin here, and we're very excited because, one, Sloan Park is celebrating 10-year
21:00 anniversary and then also, two, a lot going on out here for the celebration.
21:04 Absolutely.
21:05 It's an important milestone for us here in Mesa, Arizona.
21:09 The Cubs have been here since 1952, but this has been our home the last 10 years.
21:12 And we have a lot to celebrate over the last 10 years.
21:15 Let's remind people also, too, where Sloan Park is because it's kind of interesting.
21:18 People still, after 10 years, think you guys are way out there at Ho-Kom, but you're not.
21:23 You're literally right off the 202.
21:25 Absolutely.
21:26 Right here at the 101 and 202 in Mesa.
21:29 Nice convenient place to be.
21:31 Okay.
21:32 Let's talk about the celebration.
21:33 Let's also talk about games because first game up is already a Northside/Southside kind
21:39 of competition.
21:40 Westside/Eastside.
21:41 It's the Sox against the Cubs.
21:44 Yeah.
21:45 What better way to open than your crosstown rivalry here in Mesa or here in Arizona as
21:49 well as Chicago.
21:51 This is going to be awesome.
21:52 So, we got a lot planned for this year.
21:54 A lot of different things for the games to come up.
21:56 What are some of the things people are going to be enjoying when they come out?
21:58 Yeah, that great Cubs atmosphere here at Sloan Park is always the case.
22:03 We're going to look forward to welcoming 15,000 people here on opening day and throughout
22:08 the season.
22:09 And everyone can enjoy that great spring training experience.
22:13 Maybe come over to the marquee here and get your photo taken.
22:16 We also have a kid zone in the back, our advocate kid zone with a wiffle ball field.
22:21 Good family friendly food and beverage and treats out there.
22:25 And kids can look forward to seeing Clark, our mascot, out there from time to time.
22:29 I like that.
22:30 And let's talk games because there's a lot of different games going on here we know that
22:33 they have.
22:34 But there's some special teams coming into play.
22:36 Yeah, unique this year.
22:38 The St. Louis Cardinals are going to wrap up against the Cubs.
22:40 They're going to fly over from Florida, wrap up here against the Cubs the final two games
22:45 of the year.
22:46 Let's talk tickets because that's very important because all the packages have been sold out.
22:50 But look at me, Cub fans, look at me, look at me.
22:54 Single day tickets are available, am I right?
22:56 Yeah, packages are sold out, but single game tickets are available.
23:00 Act fast for opening day, though.
23:01 There's not a whole lot left.
23:03 Cubs.com or sloanpark.com.
23:04 There it is.
23:05 All right.
23:06 It is spring training in the Valley.
23:08 So you got to come out and enjoy the Cubs at least.
23:11 But of course, all the teams around.
23:12 All right, you're going to want to tune in tomorrow because we're going to be playing
23:13 some of the food that you can get out at the stadium, too.
23:24 So that's right this year.
23:25 So let me think.
23:26 Buy me some peanuts, some Cracker Jacks.
23:27 I don't care if we ever come back.
23:28 There you go.
23:29 I love it.
23:30 That sounds tasty.
23:31 But coming up here today, the Southwest Fashion meets Persian Influence, and we're getting
23:41 a look at some designs set to hit the Persian New Year festival that's next.
23:48 The Persian New Year festival is returning to Scottsdale, and this year they are celebrating
24:05 with the Desert Dreams Fashion Show.
24:07 Here to tell us all about it is LaDawn, Tiffany, and Masa.
24:11 Ladies, thank you for being here.
24:12 Thanks for having us.
24:13 Thanks for having us.
24:14 Okay, so LaDawn, I'm going to start with you because you are the CEO of the festival.
24:17 Is that correct?
24:18 Persian New Year festival, yes.
24:19 So tell me a little bit about what people can experience when they come out.
24:22 They can experience the best parts of our culture.
24:24 They can see our dance, our music, our food, and all the arts that come along with that.
24:29 And this year we have four events.
24:31 Our kickoff is the fashion show, and I know that's why we're here tonight.
24:35 Yes, that's very exciting.
24:36 So I do have another quick question.
24:38 I just am wondering, there's a lot of green here.
24:40 Is green significant?
24:41 Yes, this is the color of our festival.
24:43 It's a very important color for us.
24:45 It brings in the spring, which is what New Year is.
24:48 We celebrate the first day of spring.
24:49 Oh, I love it.
24:50 Okay, that's fantastic.
24:51 All right, well, Masa, let's go to you because you are the producer of the fashion show.
24:55 Is that correct?
24:56 Yes, exciting, yes.
24:57 Great.
24:58 Well, tell me a little bit about it, what people can see, and also the significance
25:01 of the name.
25:02 Sure.
25:03 Well, we are actually, the fashion show is going to be at Western Spirit Museum, and
25:08 we decided to kind of mix a Persian glamour and Southwest chic.
25:15 And that's why we came up with the Desert Dream name.
25:19 What we are going to do is to introduce five designers, two Iranian designers, and three
25:25 local designers.
25:27 And I have my first model.
25:29 Okay, yeah, well, why don't we go ahead and get into our models because we have some incredible
25:32 models here today.
25:33 So ladies, let's all take a little bit of a step back here so the models can be front
25:36 and center.
25:37 So we're going to have our first model come out.
25:38 Masa, please tell us what she has on today.
25:42 So Farah is our first model, and she is wearing Sada Fieganijou.
25:47 She is a fierce and incredibly talented Iranian designer.
25:52 And what I love about her design is that she uses sustainable materials and also uses literature,
25:59 as you can see, on her designs.
26:02 And what I love really about it is that she kind of plays with the letters, and instead
26:09 of putting everything in a very traditional way, she actually put all the letters and
26:16 alphabets on the garments.
26:19 You kind of have to guess a little bit, like what it is, but on her dress here, it says
26:25 La Lefame, and that means red lipstick.
26:29 And the mask is...
26:32 I was just going to ask, what's the significance of the mask?
26:35 It's so much to talk about the mask, but in a brief description, this is actually a bird.
26:42 It's a legendary bird.
26:44 It's a mystical bird of Iran, which is significant in our culture.
26:51 That's very beautiful.
26:52 All right, well, that is gorgeous.
26:53 Thank you so much.
26:54 I did not know that those were letters or that that was literature there.
26:56 So thank you for explaining that.
26:58 That's really beautiful.
26:59 Thank you to our first model.
27:00 Let's go ahead and bring our second model out.
27:02 And Tiffany, you are one of the designers, so please walk us through what your model
27:06 here is wearing.
27:07 Yeah, absolutely.
27:08 So this is one of my shoulder crown designs that she's wearing.
27:14 She has it styled with her garment today.
27:17 But yeah, I focus on... because I'm an artist at heart, so I create wearable art and pieces
27:24 and accessories that people can wear when they really want to spice it up.
27:29 But yeah, it's really lovely.
27:31 So I've got... in the show, I'll have pieces such as this, but then also full on dresses.
27:37 So you'll be able to see the spectrum, whether it's more accessory driven to full on, you
27:42 know, Met Gala type of outfit.
27:44 So it's really exciting.
27:45 It's very cool that you called it wearable art.
27:48 So actually I'm going to ask our model if she can turn around, do a little circle for
27:51 us so we can see the entire piece, because this is very unique and it's absolutely stunning,
27:56 of course.
27:57 So this will be something very exciting to see.
27:58 So I'll go ahead and have you stand back with our other model.
28:01 And then ladies, I do want to hear a little bit more about the events.
28:04 What else can people experience when they come out other than these gorgeous fashions?
28:08 So we start off the fashion show on February 28th and we go into a play the following evening,
28:13 the composition by Ehsan Maturi, which we will have the sound of the santur, which is
28:17 a very important instrument in the Iranian culture.
28:21 Then we go into the festival itself where not only will you have an ability to purchase
28:26 some of these items, but you will also have a boutique there where our designers will
28:32 have their pieces there so you can see it, interact with it, you know, just to experience
28:35 a little bit more.
28:36 But not to mention the entire day is filled with music and food.
28:41 We've got Andy, which is a huge, huge pop singer coming out from Los Angeles who will
28:45 be on stage.
28:46 It's a day to remember.
28:48 We've got magical art pieces.
28:50 We have three major new sculptures coming into our festival this year.
28:53 And we're going to please everyone this year.
28:56 It sounds like an incredible celebration from the fashion to the food to the music, a real
29:01 celebration of the culture.
29:03 This is so beautiful.
29:04 So Ladan, I'll have you tell everybody where they can find more information and come out
29:07 to celebrate with you.
29:09 Go to our website, persiannewyearfestival.org.
29:12 We are a non-profit.
29:13 And by the way, we do support students supporting brain tumor research.
29:17 So at the end of our festival, we do go ahead and donate to that local charity as well.
29:22 We're a non-profit, but we like to give back to our community.
29:24 That's very, very cool.
29:25 Well, ladies, thank you all for being here.
29:27 This was such a treat to see these gorgeous fashions.
29:30 And you can see these and more if you come out to the Persian New Year Festival.
29:34 All right, coming up, the Indie Film Festival has a couple more days left in the Valley,
29:39 and we're getting a look at what you can still be a part of.
29:56 The Indie Film Fest is a community-driven event that is funded by the people, for the
30:00 people, to help nurture and grow Phoenix artists' economy.
30:03 Joining us today is Candice Amina.
30:06 Did I say Amina?
30:07 Hamana.
30:08 Sorry, Candice.
30:09 Hamana, who's here to talk about the festival and how we can support this.
30:13 And it's very important, especially this time of year, in the industry.
30:18 My son's an independent film artist.
30:19 Oh, I love that.
30:20 And so this is important here to do.
30:23 And what I love is that we have all this talent here in the Phoenix and Arizona community.
30:28 Absolutely.
30:29 So the Indie Film Fest is in its sixth year of programming.
30:34 And this year is special because it's spanned out across multiple venues.
30:39 We want to make sure that we are accessible and affordable and provide a space for the
30:45 local community to come out and celebrate our independent filmmakers, creatives, and
30:50 designers.
30:51 So it's really a fantastic way to showcase the best film talent here in the Valley.
30:56 Yeah, and the thing is that you said it's spread out a couple of different places, but
31:00 what's very important, too, is that the money that is spent going to this by people is going
31:04 back into helping those, of course, artists here in our own backyard.
31:09 Absolutely, 100%.
31:11 And I think that's what makes the Indie Film Fest so special is that we're really taking
31:16 into consideration the amount of time and passion that our filmmakers bring to their
31:21 projects.
31:22 And we want to make sure that every ticket sale that happens for the film festival goes
31:28 directly back to our filmmakers.
31:31 Let's talk about some of the films here.
31:32 Because are they all short films?
31:34 Are they long films, too, or are they all different types?
31:37 There's different types.
31:38 We've got short films tonight.
31:40 So tonight's program is the Original Storytellers Night.
31:45 It features our partner organization, Cahokia PHX, of which I am a member.
31:51 And so we really highlight indigenous storytellers.
31:54 So tonight we are showcasing a film starring Lily Gladstone called Little Chief.
32:01 And so we're excited to bring that to the programming tonight.
32:05 And then tomorrow night we will be back at the Phoenix Center for the Arts for additional
32:12 film screenings, a filmmakers panel discussion.
32:16 And then we'll wrap up on Saturday with more celebration and the Grand Jury Award-winning
32:22 ceremony.
32:23 Wow, this is great.
32:24 This is so important, again, to our indie filmmakers.
32:26 And there's so many here because it's kind of interesting.
32:28 A lot of people during the pandemic came from LA to be here that were actually from here.
32:34 And that's why I love that they're coming back to work here, especially our different
32:37 communities and doing this and supporting them.
32:39 So let's talk about how people can get involved with the Indie Film Festival, even not just
32:45 right now, but going forward, so important.
32:48 Yeah, absolutely.
32:49 So there are really three main ways that our community can rise up and support the Indie
32:55 Film Fest.
32:56 The first, of course, is to come out tonight, buy your ticket.
32:59 We've got shows tonight, tomorrow, and on Saturday.
33:03 We have a hot pink carpet, hence the hot pink pants.
33:07 And we want everybody to have that hot pink moment.
33:11 So they can come out and support the festival in person.
33:14 They can also visit the website and make a contribution to the GoFundMe page, which is
33:20 basically a project that is set up to continue this ongoing support year-round, not just
33:28 during the festival.
33:29 And then they can like and share and follow us on social media @IndieFilmFest, on Instagram,
33:37 Facebook, Twitter, I believe, and then also Cahokia PHX.
33:41 That's our organization, and it is our third year of partnering with the Indie Film Fest.
33:47 So we're really excited to bring the program.
33:49 Most of the films are people from Phoenix, right?
33:52 Or are there different ones from all over?
33:54 They're from all over.
33:56 Tonight's Indigenous film screen actually includes a film from a Tanzanian film producer,
34:02 and then I know we also had producers fly out from the East Coast to showcase their
34:07 work here.
34:08 So we have people coming in from all over the world, actually, now.
34:12 So we're very excited.
34:14 I like that.
34:15 And I've got to tell people, you're going to want to go see these movies now, because
34:19 you never know, there might be an Oscar winner in them.
34:22 They might go right to the Oscars, and that's what's so great about these indie films now.
34:26 They're starting to accept them more into doing stuff.
34:29 Absolutely.
34:30 And tonight's special programming includes a film pitch competition, and one of our guest
34:35 judges is Charlie Hogan, who is one of the key lead actors in Fry Breadface and Me, which
34:43 was a Netflix hit.
34:44 So we've got so much going on.
34:47 And we're just excited to bring this amazing quality program to the Valley, and to all
34:53 the filmmakers.
34:54 That's going to be awesome.
34:55 Candice, this is great.
34:56 Again, like I said, I have big support of the indie films with my son and everybody,
34:59 so you've got to go out and support.
35:00 So information is right there on the screen, how you can find out more about the Indie
35:04 Film Fest, and we'll have it on azdailymix.com.
35:07 So thank you very much.
35:08 Sounds awesome.
35:09 All right, coming up, see what happens up in Prescott this weekend.
35:13 Get connected in Prescott.
35:14 All right, welcome back.
35:15 Let's take a look at what's happening up in Prescott this weekend.
35:16 All right.
35:17 So the B's Knees Country Swing Dance is happening.
35:18 And if you're ready to dance, then why don't you head on out for the B's Knees Swing Dance.
35:19 If you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
35:20 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.
35:21 So if you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
35:22 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.
35:23 So if you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
35:24 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.
35:25 So if you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
35:26 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.
35:27 So if you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
35:28 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.
35:29 So if you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
35:53 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.
36:19 So if you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
36:48 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.
36:49 So if you're not a dancer, well, guess what?
36:50 Dance lessons are at six and at seven.

39:52 - That's something I remember loving about camp myself.
39:54 - Yeah.
39:56 - Like, I feel like maybe a lot of kids are like me.
39:58 We like routine. - Yeah.
40:00 - This is when you get up. This is when you do your first activity.
40:02 This is when we're all going to lunch.
40:04 - Yeah.
40:06 - Like, it's nice to have, and tradition.
40:08 So do you have campers that come back year after year?
40:10 - We do. We have lots of kids.
40:12 We'll have kids come for five, six, seven, eight years.
40:14 I was a 10-year camper.
40:16 And a lot of our former campers are now counselors
40:18 And a lot of our former campers are now counselors
40:20 as they wait forever to finally turn 18
40:22 as they wait forever to finally turn 18
40:24 and be a counselor and come back
40:26 and give that same experience to the next generation of campers.
40:28 and give that same experience to the next generation of campers.
40:30 - Oh, I remember thinking, "That must be so fun."
40:32 - Yeah.
40:34 - Being a teenager that's in charge of kids.
40:36 - Yeah, yeah. It's a big responsibility, but they do a good job with it.
40:38 - And we've talked about emotional and mental health,
40:40 But there's also just, like, the food's healthy here,
40:42 But there's also just, like, the food's healthy here,
40:44 and you're outdoors and you're moving your body.
40:46 - Yeah, yeah. It's really, really good food.
40:48 You know, we home-cook everything
40:50 and three square meals a day,
40:52 a couple snacks a day, and then just running around outside
40:54 and breathing the fresh air
40:56 and sleeping under the stars
40:58 and just, yeah, appreciating nature
41:00 and this beautiful state that we live in.
41:02 - I think that's another thing.
41:04 A lot of kids now,
41:06 they're inside cats,
41:08 and they don't--
41:10 Like, it's so quiet and peaceful around here,
41:12 and you can smell the pines.
41:14 That's a different experience for a lot of city kids.
41:16 - Totally, yeah. Yeah.
41:18 Sometimes it can be a bit of an adjustment, you know,
41:20 and hearing, you know, like, the crickets
41:22 in the woods and stuff, and, yeah,
41:24 and just seeing stars in the night sky
41:26 is a novelty, so...
41:28 - So funny you mention that, 'cause when my 11-year-old
41:30 came here, he did not know
41:32 what the sound of crickets was, and he had to ask, like...
41:34 - "What is that?" - "What is that?"
41:36 Mother Nature.
41:38 So I know you guys
41:40 are basically booked up
41:42 with just a handful of openings.
41:44 - Yeah, we've been open since September.
41:46 We usually open enrollment in September,
41:48 and there's always a mad rush for returning
41:50 campers and stuff, and then,
41:52 yeah, we're getting close
41:54 to being completely full for the summer.
41:56 We still have a handful of spaces,
41:58 mostly just boys' spaces,
42:00 but we have wait lists for all of our sessions as well.
42:02 - So translation. Too late for you.
42:04 And by you, I mean me,
42:06 because I have not made summer plans yet.
42:08 - Yeah. - But thank you so much
42:10 for talking to us about camping,
42:12 and showing us the beautiful, friendly pines,
42:14 and, you know,
42:16 you are kind of a summer camp expert.
42:18 I would never want to face you
42:20 and capture the flag. - Oh, yeah, no.
42:22 It would get pretty serious
42:24 pretty quick, so I take that stuff seriously.
42:26 [laughs]
42:28 - We have a new lineup here
42:36 at the CW7, so grab your seat on the couch

43:16 - That's a good lineup, too. I like that.
43:18 - It's a very funny lineup. And I was
43:20 watching a little bit last night of, you know,
43:22 "Wild" and some other different stuff.
43:24 - Nice, yeah! - So some good shows there.
43:26 So we love it. So we love that you've been hanging out with us
43:28 this morning. And for more information on what we've talked
43:30 about during the show, head over to
