A couple heading to hospital to give birth were forced to abandon the plan and deliver their new daughter in the car they'd hastily-parked on a housing estate.

00:00 So guys introduce yourselves who have we got here?
00:02 So I'm Carla, this is Ed, we've got Finlay and Darciane.
00:06 Darciane? Not Nissan or Cosh by?
00:09 No that was the ambulance guy with the paramedic suggestion.
00:13 Now people might wonder when they see, what was this man interviewing a couple, a family in a car?
00:19 But this is a very special car isn't it?
00:22 It certainly is.
00:23 Just fill us in on the events that happened then, mum and dad, with little Bambino here on the way.
00:29 So the morning of the 7th of February, water broke at 4 o'clock in the morning.
00:33 Got to hospital, absolutely nothing happening, so came home, everything heated up.
00:39 By about 10 to 8 I was sort of having contractions quite close together, so dad and I made our way to hospital.
00:46 We never made it.
00:48 You never got there.
00:49 Never got there.
00:50 Dad?
00:51 So go on dad, so you're driving along and then what happens?
00:54 Mum says it's happening, it's happening.
00:56 So 999 call, quick and clever on the side of the road, another contraction and the head is with us.
01:05 No way.
01:06 So then one more contraction and baby's flying out as I'm catching her before she lands in the footwell.
01:12 No way, that's insane.
01:15 So the day before, the dog was actually in the footwell of the car.
01:22 The dog was in the footwell of the car?
01:24 She was, yes.
01:25 Well it's a good job the dog wasn't in the footwell this particular day isn't it, because she'd have had a surprise.
01:30 So when she said you're going to have to pull over and you were phoning 999, did the thought enter your head at that stage, you might be the one delivering it?
01:38 No, I thought like occasionally in labour, ring the paramedics, they'll turn up and they'll take over.
01:44 But when paramedics turned up, baby was lying on mum's chest.
01:47 No way.
01:48 Having checked the umbilical cord, making sure that mum hadn't lost too much blood, being spoken through by the 999 call lady.
01:59 Yeah.
01:59 Yeah, get to keep baby warm.
02:03 So what happened, the ambulance turns up, you're there with baby in arms and then what happens then, you go to the hospital for the full check over?
02:11 Yeah, so I went into the ambulance, I think I was in there about 15 minutes, so blood pressure checks and all the rest of it and make sure I was okay.
02:17 You were waiting outside panicking like Howard, I think, because they just closed the doors on both of us.
02:22 I didn't know if everything was okay, that's the only thing I was worried about.
02:25 And then off we went, yeah, to Princess Royal, we arrived at Princess Royal about 9.20pm and unusually, with all three of us, not just two of us.
02:34 We've got a photo on our way into the delivery suite with baby.
02:37 Yeah.
02:38 No way.
02:39 And after...
02:40 Yeah.
02:42 What happened?
02:44 What happened after you went?
02:46 We kept it quiet, didn't we?
02:48 Well, we surprised you at home, didn't we?
02:50 Did they? You came back and you got with a sister in arms? No way.
02:53 And, so, Daddy was on the phone and they were asking, has she lost much blood and everything?
03:08 And then he was like, I don't know, I don't know, just get me an ambulance. And Mum was like in the background, I need an ambulance!
03:18 I should think Mummy was doing that, yeah, yeah, might have been a few other words maybe as well.
03:24 So, what do you think of your Daddy for being so brave and helping Mummy?
03:29 Er, proud.
03:32 Proud, good word. And what about Mummy and your new sister? Is it exciting? You pleased?
03:37 Yeah.
03:38 You wanted a little sister, didn't you?
03:40 Did you? That's great.
03:42 So I didn't have to share all my toys.
03:44 You know what, that's good thinking young man. You know, wise when you are.
03:48 So you went into the hospital, did the check over and were you out kind of within hours really?
03:52 Yeah, we were home by three o'clock, yeah.
03:54 I did the school run.
03:56 I probably could have gone and done the school run myself really, but it was quite cold so we didn't want to take Dorothy out.
04:00 So you were, I bet you just got back and just thought, what has just happened?
04:04 Yeah, sort of thing. I sort of burst out laughing every now and again.
04:07 He'd be like, what are you laughing at? I'm like, just had a kid in the car.
04:10 Yeah.
04:11 And he'd do the same thing a few hours later. So yeah, I think we were in a bit of shock really, weren't we?
04:16 So did you toy with the idea of any quirky car related name or was that never on the cards?
04:22 No, I don't think so.
04:24 We sort of already agreed on the name.
04:26 Yeah.
04:27 Well, I'm curious, this car's got a lot of emotional attachments to you now.
04:32 Yeah.
04:33 If this happens, five, ten years and it's time to move this car on, that's going to be quite a gut wrench isn't it?
04:38 Yeah, yeah.
04:40 I was going to say, just put it in the garage, put a dust sheet over it and never let it go.
04:44 Yeah.
04:45 Cool.
04:46 Well, I'm glad everything's gone alright and she's a healthy little nipper is she?
04:50 She is, yeah.
04:51 All is good.
04:52 Look at her.
04:53 Hello.
04:55 That's great.
04:55 Just go to class.
04:56 So are you having any more, mum?
04:58 No, we're done now.
04:59 You're done?
04:59 Yeah.
05:00 You've got the full set haven't you? The boy and the girl.
05:02 You've even got the tortoise in the house.
05:04 Yes, that's right.
05:06 Well, we wish you all the best from the Shropshire Star with you and family life.
05:10 And just remind me never to jump in for a lift with you guys though, just in case.
05:14 (laughing)
