00:00 (car engine rumbling)
00:03 - Hi, I'm Daniel, I'm Delilah's dad, Demi's partner.
00:08 - I'm Demi, Delilah's mom.
00:10 - And I'm Maria, Delilah's nana.
00:12 Four days overdue, ain't ya?
00:14 - Yeah.
00:15 - And due to go for a sweep that afternoon,
00:17 midwife was gonna offer a sweep.
00:19 And I'd rang her on the morning to say
00:21 what time it was gonna be,
00:22 and whether she was gonna accept it.
00:24 And she was like, "I don't think I'm gonna last that long
00:27 'cause I'm starting to get little pains."
00:30 And I was in me work clothes,
00:32 and I was like, "What do I do?"
00:34 And she was like, "Mom, I'm gonna come for you now."
00:37 This was at about 10 o'clock, wasn't it?
00:39 And she was saying if she could manage
00:41 the pain she was getting.
00:43 She says it was just like cramp.
00:44 I think it came to mind for a quarter past 11.
00:47 And she's like, "We'll make our way to the hospital."
00:51 We rang delivery suite to tell them she was on her way.
00:54 And we got to the bridge,
00:57 and she couldn't hold on any longer, stuck in traffic.
01:01 And I had to climb out of the back,
01:04 over the front, round the side.
01:07 And the next thing you knew, baby was delivered.
01:09 While baby was being delivered,
01:11 Danny was in panic mode,
01:13 trying to get help off the police who were doing a convoy,
01:16 which was why the traffic was at a standstill.
01:18 They could only radio through for help,
01:21 couldn't actually help her.
01:23 And then baby was born,
01:26 and armed response turned up,
01:27 'cause they were the nearest people available.
01:30 And luckily, his wife was a midwife.
01:34 So we FaceTimed that to make sure
01:36 I would've done everything right.
01:37 Baby was warm and covered up.
01:40 And there was a passerby in the car behind,
01:44 who asked what was going on,
01:48 and asked if Demi's had a baby.
01:51 And she was like, "Well,
01:52 "I don't know what to do, I can't help."
01:54 I was like, "Can you please just ring me an ambulance?"
01:57 So she went back to her car to phone the ambulance.
02:00 And by the time the ambulance came,
02:02 we then got carted off to hospital,
02:04 blue flashing lights, didn't we?
02:05 - Yeah.
02:06 - I was scared to be honest,
02:08 because she was going into labor.
02:10 I was asking police for help,
02:11 and they said they couldn't help us.
02:12 They wouldn't give us a first aid kit.
02:14 They wouldn't give us a fall blanket for the baby.
02:16 I've come back to the car.
02:17 By this stage, the baby's out.
02:19 I had nothing to put the baby in,
02:21 so I had to take my hoodie off,
02:22 wrap the baby up in my hoodie.
02:24 I then got back out of the car,
02:26 went over to another police car that was there,
02:28 and they still wouldn't give us nothing to help.
02:30 So they radioed in for the other police to come and help.
02:33 - You just went into pure panic mode, didn't you?
02:34 - Yeah, I went into panic mode.
02:35 I didn't know what to do, to be honest.
02:37 - It was crazy.
02:38 Absolutely crazy.
02:39 They're just like, "Ma, my head's out.
02:42 "She's coming."
02:44 But because she's in a car seat,
02:47 all the blood and water and everything was pooling.
02:51 So when baby's head come out, until the body was delivered,
02:54 her head was actually in that.
02:56 And then when the body was delivered,
02:59 obviously that was the only time
03:00 that I could actually physically get her
03:02 and bring her up to Demi.
03:04 So because her head was there for a little while,
03:06 she swallowed quite a bit.
03:09 So she was in special care for the first week.
03:13 - She was a fighter.
03:14 (silence)
