00:00 I'm Joe Gaither and this is Bama Central's Just a Minute.
00:04 It's Tuesday, February 20th and it's been a big week for the Alabama football program
00:08 already.
00:09 A lot of the focus for head coach Caleb DeBoer has been on roster management since he's taken
00:13 over for the departed legend Nick Saban.
00:16 Obviously through the first couple of days of the transition, much of the focus was on
00:20 losing Caleb Downs, Caden Proctor and receiver Isaiah Bond.
00:25 But Caleb DeBoer has replaced that talent with several players out of the transfer portal
00:29 of his own.
00:30 On Monday, two more players joined the Alabama Crimson Tide roster, one from the Washington
00:36 Huskies and one from defending national champion the Michigan Wolverines.
00:41 Alabama solid safety Keon Saab and tight end Josh Cuevas joined the Alabama Crimson Tide
00:47 program as both are eligible to move in the transfer portal because of their coaches decision.
00:53 We know the Washington coach, obviously Caleb DeBoer has come to the Alabama Crimson Tide,
00:58 but if you didn't see, Michigan lost their coach Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers.
01:03 Keon Saab becomes Alabama's first defensive transfer in the Caleb DeBoer era.
01:08 He was a former four-star recruit out of New Jersey by way of IMG Academy down there in
01:14 Florida.
01:15 He spent two years with the Michigan Wolverines.
01:17 It's going to be a pretty big addition to Alabama and you can see the need when all
01:22 you got to do is look in last year's defensive backfield to see the holes.
01:26 There's going to be no more Jalen Key after he leaves college with no more eligibility
01:30 and Caleb Downs has gone to Ohio State to play for the Buckeyes.
01:35 So you need a safety and he's played 18 games for the Michigan Wolverines over the last
01:41 two seasons.
01:42 A lot of those games were on special teams, but my man's got 28 tackles and two interceptions
01:48 in last year's national championship season.
01:51 In his start against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, he got an interception.
01:55 He took it all the way back for a defensive touchdown.
01:58 So he has experience in playmaking situations.
02:01 We'll see if he can come to Tuscaloosa and earn his starting role right here in the defensive
02:06 backfield, especially considering the holes that were left behind by Caleb Downs and Jalen
02:12 Key.
02:13 On the other side of the ball, Josh Cuevas gives Alabama its fourth Washington Huskies
02:18 offensive player off an offense that led the nation in passing last season.
02:23 No, Josh Cuevas wasn't a huge weapon.
02:26 He had four receptions for just over 160 yards and only one touchdown out of the tight end
02:31 position.
02:32 But coming into the fold, coming into Tuscaloosa, he can provide a lot of expertise and a little
02:39 bit of experience as the Alabama offense transitions to Caelen DeBoer's system.
02:44 Now Alabama has eight transferees into the system.
02:49 Five of them have come into Alabama since Caelen DeBoer's hiring.
02:53 Four of them are Washington Huskies and one is a Michigan Wolverine.
02:57 So you're hitting the former college football playoff teams for some of their talent after
03:02 a lot of their coaching departures.
03:04 We'll see how Caelen DeBoer manages the roster going forward.
03:08 The spring transfer portal window opens April 15th, just two days after A-Day.
03:13 So you'll be able to see Nick Caelen DeBoer operate and manage his roster for 15 days
03:18 after spring practice is over.
03:21 For Bama Central, I'm Joe Gaither and this has been Just a Minute.
03:24 Alabama celebrates getting Keion Saabs safety out of Michigan and Josh Cuevas tied in out
03:30 of the Washington Huskies.
