00:00 >> The following portion of the
00:02 "Arizona Daily Mix" is
00:03 sponsored on behalf of Hills Pet
00:05 Nutrition by A1 Broadcast.
00:09 >> Obesity is one of the top
00:11 health threats pets face, with a
00:13 recent survey showing around 60%
00:15 of dogs and cats are overweight
00:17 or obese.
00:18 Last week, Brad talked with
00:20 veterinarians, Drs.
00:21 Bernard Hodges and Terrence
00:23 Ferguson, who are teaming up
00:25 with Hills Pet Nutrition to help
00:27 dogs and cats achieve and
00:28 maintain a healthy weight.
00:29 >> Good morning, Dr. Ferguson
00:31 and Dr. Hodges.
00:32 How are you two doing this
00:33 morning?
00:34 >> We're doing great.
00:35 Doing amazing.
00:36 >> All right, this is a very
00:37 important topic because we are
00:38 talking about health concerns
00:40 for our pets, and one that's
00:42 very important, and that is, of
00:43 course, obesity.
00:44 So let's talk a little bit, the
00:46 concerns that parents of pets
00:48 should have for their pet
00:49 health.
00:51 >> Definitely.
00:52 I mean, pet obesity is a growing
00:54 epidemic, you know?
00:55 But a big factor is awareness.
00:57 Oftentimes, pet parents don't
00:59 know their fur babies are
01:00 overweight.
01:01 So, you know, we're super
01:03 excited to have teamed up with
01:05 Hills, you know, for their
01:06 annual End Pet Obesity
01:08 Campaign.
01:09 You know, that's a big deal
01:11 because we're going to give you
01:12 the tools and the tricks to keep
01:14 our fur babies happy.
01:15 >> Yeah, and let's talk about
01:17 what it means for obesity pets
01:19 because some of us don't think,
01:20 you know, "Oh, no, my pet's just
01:21 so cuddly," but he's obese.
01:23 >> Yeah, you know, obesity is
01:25 definitely one of the biggest
01:26 health concerns in our pets
01:28 today, you know?
01:29 And the thing about it, it
01:30 doesn't take a lot of weight.
01:31 You know, just one pound can put
01:33 our babies in an area that they
01:34 can be kind of vulnerable to
01:35 different diseases.
01:36 Dr. Hodges and I, we see pets on
01:38 a daily basis, and a lot of them
01:39 come in and they're either
01:40 overweight a little bit or maybe
01:42 obese, and they get sick and
01:43 they have diseases like
01:44 diabetes, and we contribute
01:45 those things back to actually
01:47 being overweight and being
01:48 obese.
01:49 So that's why it's so important
01:50 for us to be proactive in our
01:51 weight management.
01:52 >> Yeah.
01:53 Well, okay, so let's talk about
01:54 the health benefits of a pet.
01:56 So let's talk about the health
01:57 benefits of a pet.
01:58 So let's talk about the health
01:59 benefits of a pet.
02:00 So let's talk about the health
02:01 benefits of a pet.
02:02 So let's talk about the health
02:03 benefits of a pet.
02:04 So let's talk about the health
02:05 benefits of a pet.
02:06 So let's talk about the health
02:07 benefits of a pet.
02:08 So let's talk about the health
02:09 benefits of a pet.
02:10 So let's talk about the health
02:11 benefits of a pet.
02:12 So let's talk about the health
02:13 benefits of a pet.
02:14 So let's talk about the health
02:15 benefits of a pet.
02:16 So let's talk about the health
02:17 benefits of a pet.
02:18 So let's talk about the health
02:19 benefits of a pet.
02:20 So let's talk about the health
02:21 benefits of a pet.
02:22 So the O is we want to observe
02:23 our babies from the top.
02:24 You know, what do we look like?
02:25 Do we have a little waist?
02:26 Are we kind of straight there?
02:27 Or we got a little outward, you
02:28 know, a little bulge there?
02:29 And the V, we want to visualize
02:30 from the side.
02:31 You know, we want to do the same
02:32 thing.
02:33 We want to know if the baby has
02:34 a waist or we got a little bit
02:35 hanging down like sometimes, you
02:36 know, our animals have or our
02:37 cats have.
02:38 And the E is we want to evaluate
02:39 the diet.
02:40 You know, how are we feeding
02:41 now?
02:42 Are we feeding once a day?
02:43 Are we feeding twice a day?
02:44 How much are we feeding?
02:45 What are we feeding?
02:46 And we want to take these two
02:47 things and we want to look at
02:48 the results and we put them in a
02:49 tool that a tool that heals has
02:50 created along with your
02:51 veterinarian and help us come up
02:52 with a diet that's specially
02:53 tailored for your baby.
02:54 >> Yeah.
02:55 Well, okay.
02:56 So, doctors, how difficult is it
02:57 to, of course, manage a pet's
02:58 weight loss and to make sure
02:59 they're staying healthy?
03:00 >> So, you know, I know how cute
03:01 little fur babies look at us
03:02 with those sweet little eyes.
03:03 And you're like, "Mm."
03:04 You know, give me a little
03:05 bit of a break.
03:06 But I know that's not the case.
03:07 I know that's not the case.
03:08 But I know that's not the case.
03:09 And so, you know, I know that
03:10 we're going to have to do a
03:11 lot of research and a lot of
03:12 research and a lot of research
03:14 And so, you know, I know that
03:15 we're going to have to do a lot
03:16 of research and a lot of
03:17 research and a lot of research
03:18 on how to manage a pet's weight
03:19 loss.
03:20 And so, you know, I know that
03:21 we're going to have to do a lot
03:22 of research and a lot of
03:23 research and a lot of research
03:24 on how to manage a pet's weight
03:25 loss.
03:26 And so, you know, I know that
03:27 we're going to have to do a lot
03:28 of research and a lot of
03:29 research and a lot of research
03:30 on how to manage a pet's weight
03:31 loss.
03:32 And so, you know, I know that
03:33 we're going to have to do a lot
03:34 of research and a lot of
03:35 research and a lot of research
03:36 on how to manage a pet's weight
03:37 loss.
03:38 And so, you know, I know that
03:40 >> All right, I like that.
03:41 My problem with IHOP is that he
03:42 wakes me in the end of the
03:43 night, middle of the night, you
03:44 know, get up, get me something
03:45 like that.
03:46 So, let's talk really quick tips
03:47 to maintain our pet's weight.
03:48 >> You know, one of the main
03:49 things, we want to make sure our
03:50 babies are active, you know,
03:51 that's something we can do by
03:52 walking or if we got cats, just
03:53 keeping them active in the
03:54 house.
03:55 But if you think your baby is
03:56 overweight, you definitely want
03:57 to consult with your veterinarian
03:58 because we know one of the most
03:59 important things is what diet
04:00 that we put our babies on.
04:01 And for overweight pets, you
04:02 know, they're going to be
04:03 eating a lot of protein, a lot
04:04 of carbs, a lot of carbs, a lot
04:05 of carbs, a lot of carbs.
04:06 So, we want to make sure that
04:07 they're eating a lot of protein
04:08 and a lot of carbs.
04:09 And for overweight pets, you
04:10 know, Dr. Hodge and I, we
04:11 definitely recommend Heal's
04:12 Science Diet Perfect Weight
04:13 Management because we know that
04:14 being on this diet, more than
04:15 70% of pets lose weight within
04:16 the first 10 weeks.
04:17 And if your baby is considered
04:18 to be obese, we definitely
04:19 recommend Heal's Prescription
04:20 Diet and they have several
04:21 products.
04:22 So, you want to consult with
04:23 your veterinarian to make sure
04:24 that the baby is on the correct
04:25 one that's going to help them
04:26 lose weight, help them maintain
04:27 a healthy life.
04:28 >> And I know that you have
04:29 a lot of questions about
04:30 Heal's Diet Perfect Weight
04:31 Management.
04:32 So, I'm going to hand it over
04:33 to Dr. Hodge.
04:34 >> Thank you, Mike.
04:35 >> So, I'm going to hand it
04:36 over to Dr. Hodge.
04:37 >> Thank you, Mike.
04:38 >> So, I'm going to hand it
04:39 over to Dr. Hodge.
04:40 >> Thank you, Mike.
04:41 >> So, I'm going to hand it
04:42 over to Dr. Hodge.
04:43 >> Thank you, Mike.
04:44 >> So, I'm going to hand it
04:45 over to Dr. Hodge.
04:46 >> Thank you, Mike.
04:47 >> So, I'm going to hand it
04:48 over to Dr. Hodge.
04:49 >> Thank you, Mike.
04:50 >> So, I'm going to hand it
04:51 over to Dr. Hodge.
04:52 >> Thank you, Mike.
04:53 >> So, I'm going to hand it
04:54 over to Dr. Hodge.
