00:00 The second reading of the Senate is now in progress,
00:03 the announcement of a minimum wage hike of P100,000
00:07 in the private sector across the country.
00:09 But a group of employers became nervous
00:12 as they were worried about the possible effects of the increase in wages on the buyers.
00:17 And they were contacted by Marie Zumali and Tina Pangliban-Pere.
00:20 As it's Valentine's Day,
00:26 the Senate is still chasing the second reading of the P100,000 daily minimum wage increase
00:33 in the private sector across the country.
00:36 For now, it's only P610 in Metro Manila.
00:40 It's smaller than in the agriculture sector
00:43 or a small business with few employees.
00:46 It's smaller than some regions.
00:49 Some say in Visayas and Mindanao,
00:51 it's only P300, according to the Senate President.
00:55 This is a gift for our workers on Valentine's Day.
01:00 It's time to help our workers,
01:05 in times when the price of goods and basic utilities are high.
01:11 He appealed to the camera to pass their challenge.
01:15 The intention is good,
01:17 but one of the camera leaders was short of P100,000.
01:21 If possible, we can make it happen, but it's too small.
01:26 It's not enough.
01:27 It should be big.
01:29 There was a discussion that it should be around P350,000 or P400,000.
01:33 But the camera has long been holding the challenge of increasing wages
01:38 because it's necessary to balance the interests of the businessmen.
01:42 If we increase the salary,
01:44 our businessmen should be able to do it.
01:47 In the Philippines, 98 to 99 percent of the business sector are MSMEs,
01:53 small businessmen.
01:55 The party of workers also said that P100,000 is not enough to increase the minimum wage.
02:01 But they say it can help in any way.
02:04 Even if we increase P100,000,
02:06 we can recover the purchasing power of P610,000
02:09 from inflation or the increase in the price of goods.
02:12 It can continue in the take-home pay,
02:14 and reduce the cost of goods through the take-home pay of ordinary workers and cost of living.
02:21 But the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, or ECOP, is against it.
02:25 It's okay to increase P70,000 to P60,000.
02:30 But P100,000 is a catastrophe.
02:33 You can only do two things.
02:35 You can increase the price if the market can afford it.
02:38 If not, you will lower the number of people.
02:40 That's why it should happen.
02:42 If the additional expenses are passed to the consumer,
02:45 it will affect the other purchases.
02:47 Everyone will be responsible, even those who don't have additional wages.
02:51 If we can lower the cost, we will increase it.
02:54 How can we give 84 percent of the workers?
02:58 There's no need to give them.
02:59 They are not included in the payment.
03:01 It's a gift.
03:03 According to ECOP,
03:04 of the 52 million in the labor force,
03:06 only 5 million will benefit from the so-called increase in wages.
03:11 It means that only 10 percent will benefit
03:14 while the remaining 60 percent in the informal sector
03:17 will not receive an increase in wages.
03:19 It's unbalanced because there are times when there's no preparation
03:24 or there's a sudden increase.
03:27 It really affects our employment level,
03:31 inflation rate, and the GDP growth that's being targeted.
03:35 Dole also said that the passing of the law is still under the legislature
03:39 and they are just the perpetrators.
03:41 For GMA Integrated News, I'm Maris Umali.
03:44 Tina Panganiban Perez, Nakatutok 24 Horas.
