The decree by Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah could put to rest political criticisms of the Federal Court ruling involving the Kelantan syariah criminal enactment, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister, in his speech at a Chinese New Year celebration on Thursday (Feb 15), said the decree reflects the seriousness of the Sultan of Selangor and Malaysian National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) to defend the spirit and principles of the Federal Constitution.

03:36 I need to emphasize the need to acknowledge the fact
03:43 that this country is based on the rule of law.
03:48 And therefore, the constitution of the nation and the laws
03:53 must be respected.
03:56 The decision by the federal court
04:00 is based on their interpretation of the constitution
04:06 and the law.
04:08 Nothing to do about their rejection of Islam
04:13 or the Sharia principles, which is being abused, used,
04:21 and criticized by some sections in this country.
04:25 So the categorical statement by the Sultan of Selangor,
04:30 appointed by the Malay rulers, in support of the federal court
04:35 decision, must be well-eclaimed by the Malaysians, Muslims
04:43 and non-Muslims.
04:45 Although the Muslims want the Sharia court
04:52 to be given some recognition, we don't dispute that.
04:57 And some issues relating to Sharia laws
05:02 need to be strengthened.
05:04 It's again not a controversial issue,
05:09 but it must go through a clear process.
05:13 We must give also a very clear categorical assurance
05:17 that any attempt to strengthen the Sharia courts
05:23 will not be at the expense of the non-Muslims
05:27 and the role of the court and judicial system, which
05:32 is being practiced today.
05:36 So these are fundamental issues which
05:38 is important that Tan Sri Low made reference
05:40 to the issue of stability.
05:42 Stability means all Malaysians, irrespective of race, religion,
05:47 or creed, must respect not only the constitution,
05:54 but the spirit of the constitution.
05:57 That this country, majority of them are Malays,
06:02 and you can provision to protect the interests of the Malays
06:04 and the language and the Malay rulers and the privileges.
06:10 But this constitution protects the right
06:15 of every single citizen in this country.
