00:00 Welcome into Bama Central's Just a Minute. I'm Blake Beiler joined by Katie Windham.
00:08 And we're going to be talking about some Alabama football. Some news came out over the weekend
00:11 that Alabama's offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb would be leaving to go to the Seattle
00:16 Seahawks, something that had been rumored for a little bit. He'll be staying at his
00:21 home in Seattle. So Alabama has been looking for a new offensive coordinator. They ended
00:25 up what looks like all signs are pointing to going to be promoting from within, hiring
00:31 tight ends coach Nick Sheridan, who came from Washington with DeBoer to be Alabama's tight
00:36 ends coach. It's not official yet, but all signs are pointing to him being Alabama's
00:40 next offensive coordinator for Kalen DeBoer's first year. So Katie, with that news and the
00:46 news of the likely hiring of Sheridan, what's kind of your reaction to that move by DeBoer
00:52 and what does it mean for this Alabama offense in year one? Yeah, an interesting offseason
00:57 for Alabama football just continues with the Ryan Grubb stuff and you know, this new offensive
01:02 coordinator. I think it's interesting that you know, according to some reports, Greg
01:09 Byrne has said that Kalen DeBoer kind of knew the whole time that Ryan Grubb was kind of
01:14 like a contingency plan because he knew there was possibility he'd become the head coach
01:19 at Washington. He knew there was a possibility he'd end up the Seahawks that he had a plan
01:24 in place. And like you said, the signs are pointing to it being Nick Sheridan. I think,
01:30 you know, he's a guy that has OC experience, the power five level in the Big Ten at Indiana,
01:37 which you know, a lot of people would say Indiana is not the same level as Alabama,
01:40 which that's probably correct. But the Big Ten, as you know, we saw this past year in
01:45 the playoffs with Michigan, is high level competition. So he does have experience in
01:50 that. He's also worked under Kalen DeBoer and is comfortable under him. And I think
01:54 that's the key thing that really, he knows Kalen DeBoer's offense, he knows how to run
01:59 and probably overall Kalen DeBoer will be doing a lot of leading the offense. It'll
02:06 be under his direction still. And I think that's the most important thing, really, the
02:10 two of them working together. And look, this is an important and deep quarterback room
02:14 to that he's kind of stepping into a Jalen Milrow and Ty Simpson and Dylan Lonergan returning
02:18 and then bringing in Austin Mack from Washington. So once again, it's a guy that they kind of
02:22 already have that connection with. And so I think it'll be important to see kind of
02:26 how he develops those relationships. And it'll be interesting to watch throughout the spring
02:32 with this offense.
02:33 Yeah, I think it's something that Alabama fans are gonna have to get used to. And that
02:38 for the past 1617 years, it's been whenever there's a new offensive coordinator, it's
02:43 an entirely new offensive system that Alabama has been running, whether that be Steve Sarkeesian,
02:49 if you compare him to the offense that Doug Nussmeyer ran in Alabama, those are two completely
02:55 different offenses, because Nick Saban was a defensive head coach. And the defense didn't
02:59 change over that time, it was still the same defense, it was Nick Saban's defense that
03:03 was being run. So here in this situation, it's flipped and Alabama fans are gonna have
03:07 to get used to as defensive coordinators come in and out, it's going to change the defensive
03:12 scheme. But now it's Kalen DeBoer's offense. So the offensive scheme isn't going to necessarily
03:18 change. He's the mind behind this offense. And he's the one that kind of makes it go.
03:24 I'm very interested to see whether he decides to take up play calling duties or not. I guess
03:30 that's something that we'll see over the course of spring and summer, whether he decides to
03:34 call plays or whether he decides to hand those off to Sheridan once that becomes official.
03:41 But I think the fact that he wanted to promote from within means he wanted it to be someone
03:47 that understands his system and how it works. And I think that's what he was most comfortable
03:51 with. And with all the moves he's made so far, I mean, we've talked even on just a minute
03:56 before that we think he's made good moves so far. And so I think Alabama fans just have
04:01 to trust him with that, know that he's going to run his system and get guys in place that
04:06 are going to be able to run it. And so that's the biggest takeaway for me was just that
04:11 it's his system and he's going to get the people in that he needs to run it effectively.
04:17 But that about wraps up today's Just a Minute. Those are our thoughts on Alabama's likely
04:22 hiring of Nick Sheridan as the offensive coordinator. Thank you so much for watching.
