00:00 That you saw that with Patra a few times this year. He got up, but he'd get squished
00:03 He was like a bug sometimes and I think it's a cautionary tale for younger players in that
00:09 You know, you don't always want to rush guys again. I'm not saying Patra's rushed
00:12 I'm saying that he wasn't rushed and look at how hard he was hit and and how many you know licks he took
00:18 So to me it was a cautionary tale and he was ahead of schedule and I and you know
00:22 We discussed this a little bit. I think last week when I came to him like oh, does this hurt us development?
00:27 No, I don't think it does
00:30 And
00:32 Welcome in to poke the bear episode
00:40 203 that's Connor Ryan. I'm Evan Maranofsky Connor. What is up?
00:44 Evan
00:47 I'm doing all right, you know a little disappointed to be honest with you that the bean pod wasn't held as originally planned
00:56 On a weather was the the impending blizzard that dropped the next day
01:01 Maybe the ice was a little wonky. I don't know the
01:05 electricity maybe was off
01:07 I don't know what exactly the cause was but
01:11 considering how
01:14 Boston University between the 21 of the most times
01:23 The fact that they weren't able to hold it in its entirety and awarded champion this year
01:29 Was very disappointing, but I understand it's on my call
01:33 I understand this probably forces outside of anyone's control that decide whether or not these games can go on. So
01:38 Just just a bummer man. Just a bummer that the beam ball wasn't given out this year. Who knows what could have happened
01:44 Yeah, I'm not letting you off that easy
01:48 Not like I do have some news they did play the game they did
01:53 You know, you're you must been playing you must have been delirious
01:57 Having some NyQuil playing some NHL or something. I was I was very I didn't go to the beanpot
02:04 I was very sick. So you're right. Maybe I could imagine it. I didn't need it
02:07 That's right. That's right. That's right
02:10 But Northeastern on for you, unfortunately one in a shootout
02:15 I know that is news. Maybe you know, I'm thinking of a different beanpot. Maybe it was played. They played it at Hockey Town
02:21 I think you went to the you went to the garden. They didn't have it there. They moved it to Hockey Town
02:25 Okay, so the Jerry keep they wanted to play in Jerry keeps backyard at Hockey Town. So good for them
02:31 You know, what's interesting is that Bruins game on Tuesday night against the Lightning?
02:38 Kind of reminded me a little of that beanpot game and that the team that outplayed the other didn't happen
02:44 Yeah, didn't wait. Yes
02:46 Didn't just didn't occur
02:49 But the Bruins lost 3-2
02:53 Tampa Bay in a shootout on Tuesday night and what's interesting Connor is was my birthday on Tuesday and
03:00 Evan happy birthday belated birthday. Thank you. Thank you. I turned I turned 58 years old. It's an honor
03:08 It's a year's young. Don't forget. Yes, 58 years young
03:12 You think if I didn't say I was kidding there'd be people who'd be like, wait a minute. He's 58 like
03:17 That would be pretty funny. I think I'm gonna leave it at 58. We're talking about the internet here
03:23 I mean, yes people would absolutely believe me. You told him you could be a the people who are like that's fact
03:27 He's 58 years old. So I'll leave it at that
03:31 But
03:34 You know, I was gonna go to dinner with my girlfriend and I look at stub hub or I look at Ticketmaster
03:40 Excuse me, not stub hub Ticketmaster
03:42 Tuesday morning and I'm like, huh?
03:44 ticket price is real low and
03:48 They were like it was like 48 bucks for the fifth row of the balcony and I'm like, why like the lightning?
03:54 It's March ends thousandth game. I get that what weather was supposed to be a factor, but it wasn't and so I'm like geez
03:59 I'm like we go to dinner all the time. Let's like let's do this, you know
04:02 Let's go to the Bruins and so literally as I was putting the tickets in my cart
04:08 It goes. Oh the buyer has changed it from 48 dollars to 40 and I was like, ah
04:13 Even better. I'll take it
04:16 so
04:18 We we went and it was fun
04:20 But it did remind me a little bit of that that beanpot game and that it I thought the Bruins played well
04:26 There was there's wasn't a lot of pushback
04:29 I mean
04:29 I think the fact that they didn't score on those two power plays at the end of the game in that third period sort of did
04:34 Them in what do you think?
04:36 Yeah, I mean I think when you weigh that against the the game against the Capitals on
04:41 Saturday anything's a step in the right direction there hell right like you could be you could still be you lose to nothing and it'd
04:47 Be an improvement over that game on on Saturday
04:50 And so I think it was they made a step in the right direction. I think the control play a lot more
04:55 You know, they raised a two nothing deficit in that game where it felt like early on there was gonna be another one of those
05:01 Here we go again kind of games for team that's kind of fallen into a little bit of a rut here
05:06 But bounce back, you know, Tampa's really good team. They're playing at a high level now
05:12 What do you know?
05:12 they're healthy and
05:13 they've got a lot of high-end talent and that can
05:16 Carry you into a hundred points in the season and it seemed like they're well on their way to doing that once again
05:21 so
05:22 As you said like I think if you're the Bruins you focus a little more on the positives of getting back to your game
05:28 You know rebuilding your your approach on the ice. You weren't, you know completely
05:34 You know manhandled or you weren't in a spot where you really had nothing going on
05:38 You're would generate some good looks had a lot of quality chances that again when you got Andre Veselovsky
05:43 making those saves
05:46 Not gonna win a whole lot of games when I got like that is really dialed in and on his game
05:51 So I think if you the Bruins you viewed as a positive in terms of it just felt more like you know
05:56 You'll take the point out of a hard-fought kind of game like that that being said the flip side of the coin, right?
06:03 Six power play opportunity. I'll give them five because what they had one power play with like 1.2 seconds left in over. Yeah
06:09 Which they got a shot off. They did get a chance on that. Yes, so five power play
06:14 Opportunities over five as you said they had what two in the last ten minutes of the third period and we had three total
06:21 I want to say in the third period
06:23 again, even with Vasilevsky in that you've got enough talent on that unit to
06:29 Get that get that one goal to put you over the top to kind of land that knockout punch
06:34 Wasn't able to deliver it there. So yes, there's definitely I don't think Bruins fan should be
06:38 All sunshine and rainbows off of a one-point shootout loss to the lightning
06:44 When this team desperately needs to kind of write the ship
06:47 But I think it was a step in the right direction at least right there kind of got back to what they need to do
06:52 To consistently win games you fix that power play you cash out on one of those it's a different game
06:57 So I think more pauses to draw out of this one as opposed to
07:00 Maybe folks, you know just like this Bruins seems in a rut and I don't know how they get out of it
07:06 Probably the point they did on Tuesday
07:07 They're going to I think start string together small regulation wins pretty soon
07:12 I say if Vasilevsky is not net for that game. You probably win
07:15 Yeah, you think about that March and great blocker save in overtime by Vasilevsky on on March and and
07:22 You know just he's so good
07:24 You said it when he's dialed in like that is probably the best goalie in the world when he's just completely on his game
07:30 when that puck slipped past all mark that first one because I was sitting basically like
07:36 Right along the goal line. I'm like, ah, man, maybe there's a reason these tickets for 40 bucks
07:42 But you know like again the Bruins aren't a team that out shoots a lot of teams, you know
07:48 They they you know kind of find ways to win in other ways. They
07:52 hold on to the puck a little more settle for you know, try to get better chances and
07:57 You know on Tuesday you see that goal for McAvoy kind of just slip in from the point and like a little more
08:03 You know in urgency shooting the puck
08:05 But you know again you said it I think if that you know most nights you play like that you're gonna win
08:14 Also, I want to apologize people real quick. My internet sucked lately. I don't know why it has been choppy right now
08:21 I see that I have like three out of four network connection things
08:26 They have little bars that we can see and mines like yellow
08:29 So I want to apologize to people who are watching on YouTube if I am choppy because I know that that is the most annoying
08:34 Thing so my apologies
08:36 Evan Evan out here looking like solid snake
08:43 It's so specific that is so specific
08:45 No, you have real ones do know
08:49 But you know, it's interesting Tampa has had the Bruins number for a long time at least in the playoffs
08:55 I wanted to ask you I know last night again
08:57 Bruins out play the Lightning Lightning kind of take the game in a shootout
09:01 If these two teams were to play
09:04 - you know a seven game series today or starting in April or May
09:09 Would you take the Bruins?
09:12 I mean, I think it all comes down to what Veselovsky you're getting saying that's the big equalizer, right?
09:18 Cuz I think you look at this
09:20 I almost said Chiefs team
09:22 But you know
09:23 They kind of remind you a little bit though of like this chiefs of like the Chiefs team where it's like they are not
09:29 There's not the the best lightning team we've seen off of this
09:32 Really strong run they've had right like they're pretty top-heavy
09:37 They invest a lot of money in their top six guys their top stars and it's kind of sapped some of that depth away
09:42 you don't have guys like
09:44 Blake Coleman and Barclay Goudreau on the third line stuff like that
09:48 But you have still enough high-end talent there
09:53 You still have an elite goalie that when he's on his game. He's probably the best in the entire NHL that I
09:58 Think the Bruins maybe have a good chance if they play their game to beat the Lightning
10:03 But that is a matchup that I do not want any you know if your team
10:07 I don't think you want to place the Lightning in the first round
10:09 Even if they still kind of are treading water
10:11 They are a wild card team that third in the Atlantic what have you don't want to face that team that team has upset
10:18 Upset Kings all over them right because when you look at just the way they are they're set up whether it's you know
10:24 Hell, they could be pretty stagnant a five and five play
10:27 You give me Nikita Kucherov running your power play and a hot Andre Veselovsky
10:31 You're gonna win a round or two or three. So I do think the Bruins are probably a more complete team
10:38 When they're again when they're playing I love when you got guys like Frederick playing
10:42 well the brass coil all those guys the obvious star power we've talked about on this Burns team, but
10:48 Sometimes it all comes down to just basic execution and when you've got a power play like that with the guy Kucherov playing the way he is
10:55 with Veselovsky and that
10:59 Stuff matchup man, like that's a team that I will not discount until it's you know
11:04 The other team has won four games in a series and they're they're sent home like that team. I will not count them out
11:09 Any year that are in the playoffs? I
11:12 Completely agree
11:14 You look at that line that they rolled out on Tuesday night of Kucherov point and Stamkos
11:20 And it's like that is a killer lot like that line could
11:23 wreak havoc in a seven game series because you have to basically
11:27 Sacrifice one of your lines try to take them out when it comes when it would come to a postseason series
11:31 So I agree with you. I would take the Bruins still
11:34 It would be favored I mean like it and you know things continue at the rate that they are they should be the favorite
11:41 And I would take them but I agree with you. That's not a team. I want to face
11:45 In the first round just given how good that they are
11:49 But it's interesting Connor with a series like that would make it really interesting to bet with on fan duel

12:34 So Connor a big storyline obviously the past couple weeks Matt Patra out for the season and
12:45 He was someone we discussed a lot in training camp probably the biggest topic we talked about
12:49 we talked a lot about him the first couple months of the season as
12:52 He ascended and and then you know
12:56 He hit some ruts had some injuries and then obviously the shoulder injury which we're silent him for the rest of the year
13:01 19 years old. How would you sum up his rookie season? How will we remember it when we look back at it in 10 years?
13:08 Yeah, I mean obviously I think
13:11 You hope that he builds off of it and you know, it'd be great if also next year. He's got
13:16 5060 points, right, but I think when you look at just this year in particular
13:21 Definitely surprised. I don't think anyone expected him to make that jump this year
13:26 I think even when he surprised a lot of people by making this team back in
13:31 October I
13:34 Think that we all expected what month?
13:36 What month?
13:40 October October
13:42 October
13:45 But I think you look at Patra and what he provided this team
13:50 Especially early on when you're looking for a little bit of a jolt of energy
13:53 I think he provided that again
13:55 I don't know anyone that was expecting him to make the team and all of a sudden this guy was gonna put up
14:00 55 60 points and doing that still 19 still his first
14:05 For a against, you know NHL competition. So I think you you had to expect there's me bumps in the road
14:11 Dude took a beating like throughout the year, right?
14:15 I mean, this is a guy that and I give give him full credit
14:18 It feels like every time he got knocked down right back up stayed in the play like wasn't for a lack of effort or
14:24 Determination or wanting to get into those kind of dirty areas of the ice
14:28 But when you're 19 years old when you're a hundred and one eighty pounds soaking wet
14:33 Those hits those battles against the board. Those are gonna add up over the long season
14:38 So I think was a good move by the Bruins to have him go under the knife now
14:43 You know rest recover
14:45 Hopefully get a little bit stronger later on this offseason when he's able to you know
14:49 Be cleared for that kind of stuff as opposed to dealing with the dislocated shoulder or a banged up shoulder
14:55 That's gonna keep on popping out causing issues. Maybe causing more damage. I think if you're the Bruins you have to take the long
15:03 Approach for with a guy that you hope can be a top six centerman down the road. So
15:07 so I think even with the you know, the injury but beyond that just the
15:12 the
15:14 Setbacks that come with playing in the NHL the you know, the limited minutes all those kind of learning curves those adjustments
15:21 I mean, I'm not that surprised by them
15:24 I think you should be encouraged for Bruins fan that one this guy's already ahead of schedule in his development and
15:29 He's kind of going through these
15:31 Growing pains now as opposed to next year, right?
15:35 It's not to say the next year is gonna be seamless by any means but when you're 19, you're going through these first
15:40 You know lessons of you know, limited ice time fighting through injuries fighting physicality. He's gonna come in next year
15:47 You know, hopefully he's healthy in camp 20 years old
15:50 Knowing what to expect from an NHL season knowing what the competition is going to be knowing what he has to do how to better protect
15:56 Himself how to deal with the schedule travel all that stuff. It's just gonna be one thing that's gonna be
16:02 Allowed for him to hopefully build off of this and once you you've gone through before and you're still just 20 years old
16:08 Gives you more of a template more of a clean slate to build your game a little bit more
16:12 I think it's what the birds are hoping to get out of him next year again
16:15 He's gonna be a top six centerman
16:17 But if you can build off of this and give you a 40 point season next year and feel more confident
16:24 So I I think that is the most important thing right in terms of just how we
16:28 Should view what what he brings this team overall
16:31 You know to me it's ahead of schedule you hit it like you didn't expect this. He comes in training camp
16:38 You know, you think he's probably year away
16:40 Lights it up. It's okay. All right, let's see what you got in training camp continues to do better
16:45 Continues to rocket in preseason games, you know after a couple games, okay
16:49 Let's see you against real NHL talent in the preseason
16:52 He dominates that then it's like, all right. Well, you probably earned your keep up here
16:56 and then you know it just kind of
16:59 snowballed and he earned the right to be here and I think it was ahead of schedule and you also hit on this like
17:05 The growing pains are happening in a year that the Bruins don't didn't need him to be a top six center or someone
17:12 Prominent on this team whatever they got from him would be gravy. And I think that was sort of the case with him this year
17:18 I also think it's a cautionary tale. I think it's cautionary tale
17:23 Because he earned the right to be here. They didn't force him here early
17:27 We you and I I think we're the most cautious people in the market when it came to him in terms of us saying hey
17:32 look
17:33 This is cool, but he's 19 and going back to do it a year at juniors
17:37 Maybe over seasoning him a bit would not be the worst thing in the world
17:41 Now he proved us wrong because he continued to dominate I continue to look good against NHL competition and he earned his right to be
17:47 Here. However, there are players that are rushed to the NHL and in every level of hockey like with newman hockey journal
17:54 The lot of the players I cover in preps and juniors they rush to the next level
17:59 when they're young and it doesn't work because they're young and they're small and they're getting there like a
18:05 freaking getting like a fly against a wall when they get hit, you know, just BAM and
18:10 That you saw that with Potter a few times this year. He got up, but he'd get squished. He was like a bug sometimes
18:17 And I think it's a cautionary tale for younger players in that, you know, you don't always want to rush guys
18:23 I'm again, I'm not saying potters rushed
18:25 I'm saying that he wasn't rushed and look at how hard he was hit and and how many you know licks he took
18:30 So to me it was a cautionary tale and he was ahead of schedule and I and you know
18:35 We discussed this a little bit. I think last week when I came to him like oh, does this hurt his development?
18:39 No, I don't think it does because he's still gonna have most of the summer to train
18:43 He will be in good shape, you know all things considered
18:47 Come to start of next season. So to me, I don't look at it as bad. I don't think the Bruins messed this up
18:53 So, I mean again, he could have got injured in juniors
18:56 That's another thing like you could write back in the if he was back there
19:00 He could have got injured and then they go shit. Imagine if he's up in the NHL
19:03 So I think it goes both ways
19:05 Before we continue our conversation a quick word from our sponsor

20:13 and now let's get back to the show so
20:16 The Bruins earn a little bit of a rut. We've seen that there was the Calgary game. There was Washington
20:23 There was the loss against Tampa on Tuesday
20:25 And you know, we've talked a lot about the deadline
20:28 We will continue to talk a lot about the deadline and what potentially needs to come in to kind of spark things
20:33 But is there anybody in Providence?
20:35 Is this the time to go down and get someone like Fabian Lysel and give the team a little charge?
20:41 Or is there anybody else a beacher potentially?
20:44 Yeah
20:45 I am curious to see if they maybe do
20:47 Bring up at least one more guy to see if it gives them just a little bit of a jolt here before they have to
20:52 Look at you know outside of this organization again when we've talked about
20:56 Trade deadline targets, we've looked a lot at you know, third pairing D
21:01 Fourth line guy. I don't know how realistic either going to be in the market for like a middle six kind of player
21:08 so I think right now if you're the Bruins and you're looking for a little bit of a
21:12 Jolt here and it can be provided but maybe a guy like Fabian Lysel who's playing at a pretty high level right now down in
21:18 Providence I think that's definitely an option, right?
21:21 I think you look especially at the bottom six
21:24 You know if you put in Lysel and you put him with a guy like, you know
21:28 Frederick and Gigi and see if he can get something there
21:32 Or even as you said like wouldn't hate putting Johnny Beecher back up here again
21:37 I know he kind of was up and down a little bit but you look at one how good he's at face offs
21:42 the fact that you know, I
21:45 Think there were a lot more positives and negatives in terms of his overall season so far again
21:49 Operating with the the knowledge. It is his rookie year
21:53 so there are gonna be ups and downs as we all expected, but I don't think he was necessarily a
21:57 Detriment or playing himself out of the lineup per se. No, he sucked Connery. We sucked you missed the point. He sucked
22:04 Okay, I know Evan I'm being soft once again, but no I I do think especially like looking at a guy like Lysel
22:11 It's kind of like the same thing with Markylov where you know
22:13 Obviously wasn't able to you know impact me maybe as much as we thought but at the time of the Bruins need a little bit
22:19 of a joke different look young players see how they do in that spot if you know, they're able to get a little bit of a
22:25 Some momentum out of that call up as well. It doesn't hurt to see what you have there, right?
22:30 I mean even if you're looking at you know
22:33 Moving on from a guy like him or you're trying to look at what your assets are
22:37 How's a nice little stretch up here one?
22:39 You either have a young cost control guy that you know
22:41 You can either keep this year or you know
22:43 you have in your back pocket for let's say next year if he thinks he's able to make the team out of camp or
22:48 if he has a couple of good games, yeah, you bring them up and
22:52 Keep keeping interested and maybe that's a guy you look at moving as part of a bigger deal if need be
22:57 so I really don't see the
22:59 The danger and calling up maybe Gallagher sell and see when you have here again keep expectations in check
23:04 I don't think you should be thinking that he's gonna have
23:06 You know five points in four games or what have you but see how he does see how he fits in especially on that
23:12 Maybe that third line see if you get a little bit something more out of them
23:16 And helps you over this little stretch here
23:18 Well, maybe you just need a little bit more of a push from someone else further down the lineup
23:22 I'm thinking of her
23:23 I'm fine with giving them a kick in the ass right now, and I want to see what Lysel brings
23:28 I do he's been playing better down in Providence
23:30 You know, they're in a little bit of a rut. The the bottom six is still up in the air
23:34 You don't have a set third or fourth line yet
23:36 I'm all for it. Give it a shot doesn't mean it's got to work. The deadline is still a little less than a month away
23:42 Try it. I'm fine with that
23:45 You know
23:46 I think now is a good time given where they're at in the standings and given where they've been at the past couple of games
23:52 So I'm fine with that. Would you look at low rye again on the back end or you do you like what you're seeing? I
24:00 Mean, I probably don't necessarily like what I'm seeing all the way around from the the decor
24:07 But I think where the low-rise fits isn't necessarily what?
24:10 I'm looking for and that's why that seems very calm. I've read but you know, no, I agree with you on this
24:15 You don't want someone you don't need a puck mover. You need someone who's a little bit defensively irresponsible at times
24:20 You need someone who's locked down shut down. Yeah any more fortitude back there?
24:24 I'd still rather when you look at just where Laura's strengths are
24:28 What the needs of this team are for right now at least again, we'll revisit this
24:33 I'm sure we'll revisit it every month, right?
24:35 But I'd rather keep him down in Providence playing 20 plus minutes a night feeling confident about his game racking up points
24:41 Do that right now. I don't think necessarily the the lack of a scoring punch from a maybe a guy
24:48 Upfront like Lysell that doesn't necessarily translate to the fact they need more of that
24:52 from the the blue line at least in terms of what a guy like Laura I can provide and what the
24:58 Pinchel net negatives are bringing up as well. So I keep him down in Providence
25:02 I'm looking more to guy like Lysell or a forward like that. See if you get a little bit more of a
25:06 spark that way
25:08 Bring up bussy and trade all mark. That's that's what that's the move
25:11 That's the big move you got to do if you really want to shake things up
25:16 Kidding of course, I agree with you Lysell is probably the guy and give be true a shot again. Why not?
25:21 Anyways, that's a poke the bear episode 203 Connor. What can people look forward to from you over Boston comm in the Boston Globe?
