The 49ers elected to receive the ball first in overtime against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, and it was the correct call. Here is why.

00:00 [INAUDIBLE]
00:05 Yeah, it was two real good teams.
00:07 Went back and forth throughout the whole game,
00:09 and both teams played their asses off,
00:13 and then they got it done.
00:14 What are your worst feelings?
00:17 I mean, we all hurt.
00:18 I mean, everyone knows how it feels,
00:20 and don't have a lot of words for it,
00:23 but obviously we're hurting.
00:24 Our team's hurting, but that's how
00:26 it goes when you put yourself out there.
00:28 I'm real proud of our guys for no regrets with our team.
00:32 I thought our guys played so hard today.
00:34 Not everything was perfect by no means,
00:35 but if you're going to lose with a group of guys,
00:38 it's do with those guys any time.
00:41 And we'll take some time.
00:44 We'll get over this, and come back next year ready to go.
00:47 By the way, your offensive progression
00:48 didn't get over time.
00:49 Obviously, you wanted a touchdown.
00:51 What went wrong?
00:51 Were you guys going to get through that?
00:54 On the third down?
00:56 It looked like there was a protection bust up the middle.
00:59 We were going to Juwan.
01:01 Looked like Juwan killed him.
01:02 Won pretty good, but Chris Jones got loose in the middle.
01:06 I think there was a mistake.
01:07 Not sure, but honestly, he's hard to get a block.
01:11 It looked like you thought about it, maybe going for it there,
01:13 in the field goal, or was that at all hesitation,
01:16 whether to kick the field goal?
01:17 No, we never thought about their fourth and four.
01:20 I mean, even if we do go and score,
01:21 they still can go down and match it.
01:23 And so no, there wasn't a thought there.
01:25 Kyle, why the new rules for overtime?
01:27 What was it that the decision to take the ball first there?
01:30 It's just something we talked about.
01:33 None of us have a ton of experience of it,
01:35 but we went through all the analytics
01:36 and talked to those guys.
01:37 And we just thought it'd be better--
01:38 we wanted the ball third.
01:40 If both teams matched and scored,
01:41 we want to be the ones who have the chance to go in.
01:43 And we got that field goal, so we
01:45 knew we had to hold them to at least a field goal.
01:47 And if we did, then we thought it was in our hands after that.
01:50 It looked like your defense was pretty gassed
01:52 at that point in the game.
01:54 Did that go back to your individuals
01:55 that you're making it all, give them a little bit of a dash?
01:59 No.
02:00 We decided that before.
02:01 And how-- I mean, how's Kittle going to drink Greenlaw,
02:04 the guy that had to come out?
02:07 Greenlaw tore his Achilles.
02:09 I'm not sure about George.
02:10 It was a shoulder thing.
02:12 He couldn't go there at the end.
02:13 It was a little bit off and on, but he
02:15 was playing through a lot of pain there and then.
02:17 You went out to try to shake Andy's hand,
02:19 but then didn't.
02:19 That's because you saw it was a conjecture time.
02:21 No, we talked on Monday.
02:22 I mean, last year-- or when we played each other last time,
02:26 it was--
02:27 took about 25 minutes to actually shake his hand.
02:29 So we both talked on Monday that regardless of who won--
02:34 I mean, I love Andy.
02:35 I'm tight with Andy.
02:37 But we talked.
02:38 Both of us were going to do that because it's
02:39 too hard to get to each other after these Super Bowls.
02:41 After all these hard losses you've had in 10 years,
02:44 what do you tell your team after this?
02:46 Anything different?
02:47 Any different tone to that?
02:49 No, there's nothing different to say.
02:50 I mean, I don't care how you lose when you lose Super Bowls,
02:53 especially ones you think you can pull off.
02:55 It hurts.
02:56 But I mean, I think--
02:59 I don't know.
03:00 When you're in the NFL, I think every team should hurt,
03:02 except for one at the end.
03:03 We've gotten pretty damn close, but we haven't pulled it off.
03:06 And we're hurting right now, but it
03:09 doesn't take away from how proud of our guys I am.
03:12 I'm real proud of them today, too.
03:14 That's part of sports.
03:15 It's part of football.
03:16 It's part of life.
03:17 But we put ourselves out there.
03:20 And I love our team.
03:21 And we'll recover.
03:24 And we'll be back next year strong.
03:26 How do you assess your offense in this game?
03:29 What's that?
03:29 How do you assess your offense in this game?
03:30 How do I what?
03:31 Assess your offense.
03:33 I mean, each play is different.
03:35 How do you think Brock played?
03:36 He was definitely moving around, using his legs.
03:39 Was that an emphasis to try to get him outside a little bit?
03:43 No, I mean, we called a couple of bootlegs and stuff, which is--
03:46 I mean, you do that on that.
03:47 But I mean, that's what Brock does.
03:48 Brock scrambles.
03:49 He makes some plays.
03:50 And I mean, we knew it would be like that, just going--
03:53 I mean, that was the toughest defense
03:55 we've been against this year.
03:56 We knew it going into the game.
03:58 I mean, that's a good group.
03:59 I mean, the way they mix up the blitzes and stuff,
04:01 and the two-shell coverages.
04:03 They're tough against the run.
04:04 And the man coverage they played was tough.
04:06 But that's why they haven't given up 27, or more than 27
04:09 this year.
04:10 So we had our chances.
04:12 Needed to score a couple of touchdowns when we did it.
04:14 But I was happy with Brock.
04:17 Kyle, you did go for it on the fourth of three earlier.
04:20 Is that just the home's factor into that?
04:23 Like, we have to score more?
04:24 Oh, yeah, 100%.
04:25 That isn't probably something we normally would do.
04:27 But I thought it was the right thing in that situation.
04:30 Kyle, your special teams had some good moments.
04:32 But there are obviously two big gaps there.
04:34 How hard is it to kind of swallow those and move forward
04:36 your view?
04:38 I mean, I saw the ball bounce and it hit off Luder.
04:42 And so, I mean, yelling Peter, I don't know.
04:44 I can't hear it out there.
04:46 So it looks like he didn't hear it either.
04:47 And the ball took a bad bounce and got him.
04:50 And I didn't actually see what happened on the block field
04:53 goal.
04:54 I'm not sure there.
04:56 But yeah, those are some tough plays.
04:58 You got away from the run game a little bit
04:59 in the third quarter.
05:00 What was your thought process there?
05:01 I didn't get away from the run game.
05:03 You go three and out and you don't get drives.
05:05 So I didn't get away from it.
05:07 We just didn't stay on the field.
05:09 How did you feel at halftime with that lead?
05:11 You got the trick play touchdown.
05:13 It's obviously going to be a tight game.
05:15 How were you feeling?
05:17 There was no feeling at halftime.
05:20 We didn't feel like we had a lead.
05:22 Big lead, it was 0-0.
05:23 We could have been up a lot more and not felt
05:25 any different or down.
05:26 It's a whole other half of football to play.
05:28 Kyle, on the final play, Kyle, did you have a good view of it?
05:31 Did Logan stall getting over the cover?
05:35 I didn't have a good view of it.
05:36 I'm not sure who it was.
05:38 But I'm not sure.
05:39 Kyle, at least I thought you were out of luck.
05:42 I thought Brock did a good job.
05:44 Gave us a chance to win.
05:45 Kyle, Kyle, how are your thoughts on finishing
05:47 the whole year last?
05:48 I mean, same as always.
05:49 He's unbelievable.
05:50 Kyle, I'm tired of the trick play.
05:52 You kind of break down.
05:53 I know Juwan did a good job.
05:55 You're going to play to Christian.
05:58 Yeah, we just threw a screen to Juwan.
06:00 We threw it back to Christian.
06:02 That's a play that a lot of teams run.
06:04 We've ran it in the past a number of times.
06:06 And thought it looked good today.
06:08 And the guys did a hell of a job making that play.
06:10 Kyle, I'm tired of the trick play.
06:12 We've got to pass it and take it all for a win.
06:14 No, that's not why we did it.
06:15 We decided before just the way we were going to go,
06:18 just discussing it.
06:19 We don't have a lot of experience in that.
06:21 And our biggest thing was we knew both teams
06:22 were going to get the ball at least once.
06:24 So we wanted to make sure if we won the toss,
06:26 we wanted to be the team who got it the third time.
06:29 Did you feel like you had a 100% look for an early job
06:31 to finish the high school?
06:34 I mean, looked pretty good at the beginning.
06:37 Got them to a third and one, a fourth and one.
06:40 I mean, we had a number of guys go down.
06:43 But I mean, that's what those guys do.
06:45 They're real good at it.
06:46 How much consideration did you give
06:47 when you think you have a little bit of a possibility
06:50 going forward?
06:50 None.
06:51 Yeah, fourth and four.
06:52 I mean, you go for it and get a touchdown,
06:54 they still got another chance.
06:56 You don't get it, and then they just got to go down
06:58 and kick a field goal.
06:59 How much did the injuries factor in for you guys?
07:01 You look like you can't lose a game, so you can obviously
07:04 drain.
07:04 How much of a plus did you have?
07:06 I mean, injuries are part of the game.
07:07 They're always a big deal.
07:09 It's always tougher when you lose good guys like that.
07:11 A young guy like Brock, do you see him
07:13 as a potential quarterback?
07:14 Hopefully I'll spend a little time with him tonight.
07:17 We'll see how it goes.
07:18 But I mean, you don't say a lot.
07:19 There's not much to say.
07:20 You let guys deal with it.
07:21 You got to feel this.
07:23 It's not something that just words or anything
07:25 makes it feel better.
07:26 You sit there, and you deal with it,
07:28 and you got to do that for a while.
07:29 But I'm so proud of Brock, how he shows up every week,
07:32 how he plays.
07:33 He had an unbelievable year, and he did a hell of a job today.
07:36 Kyle, how often do you let yourself
07:38 feel this before you move on to the next game?
07:42 I don't give myself a time limit.
07:45 I deal with it the next couple of days, next couple of weeks,
07:49 and when it's time to work, which
07:51 will be sooner than later with how these seasons go.
07:53 But we'll be ready.
07:54 We'll come back, and we'll constantly
07:56 be working on it throughout the whole offseason.
07:59 Kyle, there's three times now that you
08:01 know with the Falcons without the Niners,
08:03 three double-digit league Pacifica.
08:04 A lot of people will talk about that.
08:06 Why do you think this is happening?
08:08 [INAUDIBLE]
08:08 I missed my second game as a head coach,
08:15 but I think when you go against guys like Tom Brady and Padma
08:19 Holmes, you better never feel comfortable with the lead.
08:22 I mean, those are two of the best players
08:23 to ever play the game.
08:24 And that's why, whether you have a lead or your down points,
08:28 those guys are always in it.
08:30 We watch them all the time do that stuff.
08:32 [INAUDIBLE]
08:34 You've talked about not wanting to have regrets on the stage.
08:37 Can you tell right now, do you have any regrets about--
08:40 No, I mean, yeah, when we go through football,
08:44 and you watch it as part of our job,
08:46 I mean, any play that doesn't work,
08:48 you always think about that.
08:50 But in terms of everything that we try to do,
08:52 we try to prepare as hard as we can.
08:55 And we try to go in there and do exactly what we think's right
08:58 based off our preparation, what's going on in that game,
09:00 and try to make the--
09:03 what I can't live with is when I do stuff
09:05 that I didn't plan on doing or that I didn't do
09:07 and second guess myself.
09:08 And I'm proud of what we did today as a coaching staff
09:12 and as players in terms of we worked,
09:18 and we did everything that we planned on doing.
09:19 We just didn't get it done.
09:21 And any play that didn't work out, yeah,
09:23 you always look at that stuff.
09:24 But that's how every game is.
09:26 And that's what we work at.
09:27 [INAUDIBLE]
09:29 Last one.
09:31 What's that?
09:32 Who do you hurt for the most?
09:34 Who do I what?
09:35 Yeah, I mean, I hurt the most for the players.
09:40 Those are the guys--
09:41 I mean, it's just such a--
09:43 can't tell you guys how long it takes to get here
09:45 and just how long an NFL season is, going through January
09:48 and all the way into February.
09:49 So our guys I hurt for the most.
09:54 Last one.
09:54 It was good?
