Panelo challenged to live in Mindanao

Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong challenges former presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo to live in Mindanao and experience living in conflict-ridden areas during a press conference on Tuesday Feb. 13, 2024, at the House of Representatives. Adiong's reply was in reaction to a statement by Panelo published in The Manila Times on Sunday that any opposition to Mindanao secession being floated by former president Rodrigo Duterte "has gone ballistic from over-reaction to the utterly absurd."

00:00 I'd like to ask your reaction to what former presidential spokesman, Sal Panelo, said in the Manila Times.
00:09 The reaction of the people in the opposition of Mindanao succession has become gun ballistic from overreaction to utterly absurd.
00:20 I told him that an idea of Mindanao succession cannot be absolutely said to be doomed to fail.
00:27 Any advocacy or concept must pass the crucible of a debate prior to the determination of its success and failure.
00:33 Lastly, he said that the succession is anchored on the principle that the people have the right to self-determination.
00:41 They have the right to choose the kind of government they want, to choose the officials who will govern them, and to determine their future.
00:48 What do you have to say to what former president, Sal Panelo, said?
00:53 Well, obviously, former Secretary Panelo is not from Mindanao.
00:59 Because I said it, when you say succession and independence, these are not mere words to us.
01:06 We experienced a lot of deaths, a lot of wars.
01:11 Of course, when you hear these issues again popping up out of nowhere, of course it will remind you of your past experiences before.
01:22 And it doesn't sit well in our memory.
01:26 Obviously, he's not from Mindanao, so he does not know why we reacted this way.
01:31 And yes, I said that we are a democratic society.
01:35 There's plenty of spaces where you can say your piece.
01:41 But when you discuss about succession, it has a very deep meaning to it.
01:47 Because you're talking about not only disenfranchising certain areas from the Philippines, you're actually threatening our territory.
01:57 You are threatening not only the geographical composition of the Philippines, but you are in fact threatening the existing institutions.
02:08 Which, by the way, institutions are very, very working now.
02:13 I'm sorry if that's not the scope of the...
02:18 But we are from Mindanao and we heard the explosions and we saw who died.
02:24 I, my fellow countrymen, died.
02:26 Of course, when you talk about encumbrance, talk about these things, it's not just globalistic.
02:33 So my question to Secretary Panelo is, will he go to Mindanao where he lives in our area and tell him if there are...
02:47 especially in conflict-stricken communities, and tell him to become independent, what will be his reaction?
02:57 Thank you.
