00:01 Six days you may labor and do all your work.
00:05 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.
00:08 Keep it separate.
00:10 Keep it set apart from the ordinary rhythm of time.
00:14 There's a good reason why historians are saying that
00:18 post-World War II we enter the period called the Great Acceleration.
00:21 It's that people now feel the pacing of their lives has accelerated to a point
00:26 where they don't have time to care for themselves.
00:29 They don't have time to care for family members.
00:31 I think our culture right now is profoundly burned out.
00:35 Two-thirds of Americans say that they're working more than 40 hours any given week.
00:40 We have to work more in order to sustain the same level of living.
00:43 The labor movement in America is a surprisingly religious story
00:48 and it does often converge at the issue of Sabbath.
00:51 Shabbat is a revolutionary concept.
00:53 It actually changed human history.
00:56 For the first time it introduced the concept of mandated rest.
01:02 The very heart of the idea is a kind of worker's rights idea.
01:07 Sabbath has ethical implications.
01:09 Work should not be what defines us as human beings.
01:13 It's a commandment. It comes from God.
01:16 That's why we observe Shabbat as a Christian.
01:20 I don't think we take the Sabbath seriously enough.
01:23 If Sabbath rest was going to flourish and live in their lives,
01:27 something else was going to have to die.
01:30 And I just never had an appreciation for the Sabbath day or understanding of it.
01:36 All of that came to me recently.
01:39 And I've been pastoring 34 years.
01:41 A lot of what it translates into is,
01:44 I wish I just had more time in which I just paused to breathe,
01:49 to think about what it was that I was actually chasing after.
01:52 We realize that time is our only non-renewable resource.
01:56 Latino Catholics identify with the story of Exodus,
02:00 the story of the Israelites wandering the desert.
02:04 It's like the whole week is hectic,
02:06 and then all of a sudden you light the Shabbos candles,
02:10 and you're in a different world.
02:12 Sabbath isn't simply a pious teaching.
02:14 It's not an add-on.
02:16 What's at issue is the very meaning of life.
