00:00 Police have released CCTV footage of the assault on the man on Ashburton Street in Bentley
00:07 on January 15. It shows the 69-year-old man being surrounded, pulled down and repeatedly
00:13 punched and kicked.
00:14 These types of acts are cowardly and abhorrent and the victim is extremely lucky in this
00:18 case not to have any lifelong injuries as a result of this assault.
00:23 Police say the man had asked the youths to stop throwing rocks at a house under construction.
00:27 An 11-year-old boy has been charged and police are looking for two other males.
00:32 We are imploring that if these people who are involved in this incident are watching
00:36 this to please come forward and hand yourselves in to police. I also ask the family members,
00:42 if you recognise these people, to please encourage them to come forward.
00:48 I have seen that video. It's sickening, absolutely sickening. And the assault on that older member
00:53 of the community I think would disgust everyone.
00:58 But the Premier says he doesn't think Perth has a youth crime problem.
01:02 What we do have right across all our major metropolitan and high population areas is
01:08 an increasing disregard for public safety and an increasing disregard for common decency,
01:15 I think driven a lot by the modern media world in which we live.
01:20 Mr Cook says it's important to have more police to combat crime, and for those who
01:24 are found guilty to be punished. The 11-year-old boy is scheduled to appear in the Children's
01:28 Court in Armidale next week.
