A deal to bring in Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto on a loan with an option to buy was agreed with the club and player, but Alberto’s agent demanded more money before the deal was finalised and Wolves pulled out of the transfer as a result.

00:09 Hello I'm Nathan Judah, I'm here with Wolves reporter Mr. Liam Keane.
00:12 Liam, it's our second update for Deadline Day.
00:14 There's been some movement or lack of it?
00:17 Yeah, not good news for Wolves fans.
00:19 If you wanted Armanio Brogia at the club.
00:22 Wolves were in the race all day, happened for a while.
00:26 Pretty much going head to head with Fulham.
00:28 And it came down to the loan fee that Chelsea were demanding.
00:32 So obviously from the original video earlier today,
00:34 Chelsea originally wanted a massive obligation to let him go on loan,
00:37 obligation to buy, which Wolves were never going to be able to do.
00:40 They then changed their minds, were happy to do a loan,
00:42 but they wanted a £5 million loan fee.
00:44 Reports elsewhere are suggesting that Fulham's loan fee that they're paying is £4 million,
00:49 so not too much less than the £5 million they were demanding.
00:52 But that still would have been way out of Wolves' agreement.
00:54 So Wolves have been beaten to this one,
00:56 partly because the money they're being quoted for a loan fee is extortionate.
01:00 And Wolves are not in a position to be able to pay it.
01:04 So they move on from that one, and it looks like Fulham have got their man.
01:07 Yeah, look, it remains to be seen whether, if they were in a better financial capacity,
01:11 whether this deal would have been done.
01:13 I guess it's disappointing, but at the same time, they've got to move on now.
01:16 And if they do, that means that I assume a certain young striker is staying at the club.
01:20 Yeah, Nathan Fraser now very, very unlikely to go anywhere.
01:23 Wolves, if they are able to do anything, which can't be completely ruled out,
01:27 you know, we're at almost 6pm here now,
01:29 there's a few hours to go, five hours to go to the end of the window,
01:32 and it's not completely dead, but looking very unlikely Wolves will bring anyone in.
01:37 But we're down to plan C, plan D, aren't we?
01:39 Yeah, exactly. And with that, Nathan Fraser is incredibly unlikely to go anywhere at this point.
01:44 So he will remain with Wolves.
01:46 You would imagine he'll be a constant on that bench for the rest of the season now.
01:50 It's now hopefully up to him to get some minutes and impress.
01:53 But it's a tall order for an 18-year-old to make a big impact in the Premier League.
01:57 So I don't think he deserves to have any pressure on him.
02:00 And anything he does do is a massive bonus.
02:02 Do you feel, though, with supporters, and we'll be discussing this on the podcast later on,
02:06 there'll be a frustration there that they've let both strikers go?
02:10 Yeah, I think so. I mean, Gary O'Neill suggested that from a financial point of view,
02:14 they had to allow them to leave to bring someone in,
02:16 and they didn't want to risk letting them go and then not be able to bring someone in when the time was right.
02:23 But at the same time, it's clear that things have changed.
02:26 The outlook has changed, and he went from being very confident they'd get someone in
02:30 to not very confident to slightly more confident yesterday.
02:33 That's clearly because of the Uri Alberto deal, which in the end fell through.
02:36 And it has to be a frustration from Gary O'Neill's point of view, probably more than anything,
02:42 that they ended up with nothing.
02:44 Loyalist to that fact, it was a massive risk letting Sacha Khaledjian go at the time he did,
02:48 without a replacement lined up.
02:50 That was Wolves' original stance before changing their stance.
02:53 And it's a risk that hasn't paid off, because they're now one or two injuries away from being in a bit of trouble.
03:01 So, touch wood they've got a very good injury record this season,
03:04 but it's an interesting game to be playing, risking players' fitness in the second half of the season.
03:10 The fact that Wolves have done so well on the field means that they're in a comfortable position,
03:15 but they've still got to continue that momentum.
03:17 Look, a lot of pressure to stay fit on Matheus Cunha now.
03:22 Hwang Hee-chan coming back from South Korea at some point in the next two to three weeks.
03:26 Depending on how they do, he could have been available for Sunday,
03:29 we're one minute away from going out of the competition, but he stays.
03:32 And look, if all three strikers, Pedronetto of course as well, if they stay fit,
03:36 with where they are in the table, they can get away with it with Belagard, Sarabia backing up.
03:41 But like you say, one or two injuries, long-term injuries, and goodness me,
03:47 this will look like a bit of a disaster month in January.
03:49 Yeah, and that's where it comes down to taking that risk that in the end hasn't paid off.
03:54 Now we'll still be working here before the game, during the game, after the game,
03:59 leading up to the 11pm deadline to see if there's anything Wolves can do.
04:02 I wouldn't want to stand here without having certainty to say that there's nothing coming in
04:06 because strange things have happened in the last few hours of the window.
04:10 Wolves have left themselves in a position now where their key targets
04:13 clearly at the end of the window haven't come off,
04:15 and they're going to be scrambling if they can do anything, which seems unlikely at this stage.
04:20 And that risk hasn't paid off.
04:23 They now need a little bit more luck, which they've had a lot of this season to be fair,
04:27 a little bit more luck in the second half of the season to continue the momentum.
04:31 Another point I will make on top of that is that as much as expectations change
04:37 based on how well Wolves are performing, they were also expected to do nothing this season,
04:41 and they've done the opposite of that.
04:43 So they deserve credit for where they've got.
04:45 They've got themselves too, but that is largely down to Gary Neville and the players.
04:49 In what has been, for the hierarchy, a very difficult financial period to manage.
04:55 Hopefully we're coming out the end of that, and in the summer it will be a bit more easy.
05:00 £200 million this summer. Maybe not that much, but maybe a bit easier to manage.
05:03 We'll bring you all the latest, of course, up until that 11 o'clock deadline.
05:06 We've also got the small game of Wolves versus Manchester United.
05:09 8.15 kick-off, can't wait for that.
05:11 11.45 kick-off followed by an 8.15 kick-off.
05:14 You just love football, don't you? We'll see you in a bit.
