00:00 This was a little topic that came up on the conference call.
00:02 Were you listening to it?
00:03 Yeah.
00:03 Okay. So it was Matt Barrows who asked it.
00:07 It was a good question.
00:08 What's up with these DNs?
00:09 Why are they doing what you're asking them to do?
00:12 Kyle Shanahan essentially said,
00:14 "Yes." When they get blocked down,
00:17 they're not really in charge of setting the edge.
00:20 It's either a cornerback or
00:21 a safety who's in charge of setting the edge at that point.
00:24 That essentially, the DN is trying to
00:28 spill the runner further to the outside and into
00:33 the waiting arms of Travarius Ward,
00:37 Diamandor Lenore, Ambry Thomas,
00:39 or Jeyer Brown, or Tashawn Gibson.
00:42 It sounds like those guys have been whiffing a little bit.
00:45 We saw Logan Ryan whiff big time against Aaron Jones,
00:47 but it's interesting to hear Kyle put it on the DBs.
00:52 I think he's right. It seems like
00:56 every time we talk about setting the edge,
00:58 it all becomes this gigantic Chase Young conversation.
01:02 It's not. In this defense, he's right.
01:05 You know who the Niners really miss?
01:08 Who they had, who was great at setting the edge?
01:11 Emmanuel Mosley. Emmanuel Mosley was
01:15 awesome at setting the edge and Jimmy Ward was too,
01:17 and Tartt was really good at it as well.
01:20 Isn't Travarius Ward supposed to be
01:22 one of the better tacklers at corner?
01:24 Maybe not recently.
01:26 Well, he's definitely a bigger bodied guy, for sure.
01:30 I used to say he was the best
01:31 tackling corner in the league.
01:32 D'Amico used to say that, but maybe not recently.
01:34 Diamandor has been throwing his body around.
01:37 Diamandor was quiet in this game,
01:38 but he's had a huge playoff run.
01:40 But to me, it's Gibson and Logan Ryan
01:44 that really struggled in that Green Bay game.
01:47 I thought, you know what?
01:50 We talked about it, I almost begged for it.
01:52 Jeyer Brown, starting him over Logan Ryan,
01:55 probably was the difference between winning and losing.
01:57 Logan Ryan was an absolute sieve last week
02:00 against Green Bay, could not make any plays
02:03 at all in the backfield.
02:05 He missed a couple of tackles.
02:06 Jeyer Brown had 10 tackles, five solo,
02:09 threw his body around with reckless abandon, man.
02:11 Imagine what, and they still ran for days.
02:14 Imagine what they would have done without Jeyer Brown.
02:18 Yeah, I want to go back and watch the film on that one
02:20 and see on those outside runs, which of these DBs
02:22 are not making the play,
02:25 because Kyle pointed the finger directly at them.
02:29 (upbeat music)
