At Better Piggies Rescue, we are on a mission to create a safe and comfortable haven for our rescued pot belly pigs and farm hogs. We are thrilled to share that we have a barn installation date set for March 2024, but we need your help to make it a reality. BPR rescues around 10 to 15 pigs a month, and it’s one of the only pig dedicated sanctuaries in Arizona covering from Maricopa County to the northern border of Arizona. 00:00 There's nothing better than helping animals have a great home and that's why I'm standing
00:07 here with Danielle Betterman today to talk about Better Piggies Rescue.
00:12 So this is something that's so cool and unique.
00:14 Danielle, tell us a little bit about what you guys do.
00:16 Yeah, so Better Piggies Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
00:20 Our goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and educate the public on potbellied pigs.
00:25 We also do adoptions as well.
00:26 Okay, so the coolest thing is that not a lot of people know that pigs are actually
00:32 really intelligent, they're really smart, and they're great pets.
00:35 Yeah, wonderful pets.
00:37 They are so loving.
00:38 They bond so quickly to their person, to other animals.
00:42 Not for everybody, of course, but you know, if you get them into the right home, it's
00:47 a great fit.
00:48 Okay, and we have to talk about the star of the show here.
00:51 This is Captain Hook.
00:52 Tell us a little bit about him.
00:53 So Captain Hook came to us.
00:55 He was a bait pig for fighting dogs.
00:58 So he was rescued by us, and he's just really living his best life at Better Piggies, loving
01:03 his best friend, Barbara.
01:06 And he gets to hang out with over 178 pigs at the sanctuary.
01:10 That's so, so cool.
01:12 And yet, this is a very unique thing.
01:14 We were just talking about it, that, you know, helping any animals is obviously beautiful,
01:17 but this is a unique thing that you guys are doing.
01:20 Not everybody is helping out with hogs and pigs.
01:23 Tell us where you find most of your animals.
01:26 So a lot of them come from neglect cases, abandonment, and abuse cases.
01:31 We are one of the biggest potbelly pig rescues in Arizona.
01:37 We share that with Ironwood Pig Sanctuary in Marana.
01:40 But we are a close-knit community of rescuers and sanctuaries.
01:45 And our goal, yeah, is to rescue and rehabilitate all these pigs that, you know, people are
01:49 just dumping because they're too big or they don't get them spayed and neutered.
01:54 So that's where we come in and we take care of them.
01:56 Okay, I love this.
01:57 So tell me a little bit more about making the beautiful barn, because this is where
02:02 they're all going to go to live.
02:03 They're going to live out their fabulous lives, like you were saying.
02:06 How is that going?
02:08 It's projected for March, yes?
02:09 Yeah, so we are fundraising right now.
02:11 We're going through March.
02:12 Our goal is to raise $15,000 to build a barn.
02:16 It's a great opportunity for us to get more pigs in, more pigs to rescue, and then it's
02:21 a place for them to recover from spays and neuters, you know, any sort of rescue attempts
02:27 that come in.
02:28 We're able to kind of isolate them a little bit in there just to see how they're acting.
02:32 It's a great opportunity for us to kind of grow our rescue and rescue more pigs.
02:37 And that's the goal, is to rescue more pigs.
02:40 Okay, so the goal is $20,000, is that correct?
02:43 $15,000, but we'll take $20,000, too.
02:45 Okay, perfect.
02:46 Yes, that's good.
02:47 Then the goal is $20,000.
02:48 Yeah, exactly.
02:49 How do people get involved?
02:50 How do they donate?
02:51 How do they volunteer?
02:52 All of that stuff.
02:53 So the best thing is to go to betterpiggiesrescue.org.
02:54 We do tours every month.
02:56 We also need volunteers, so we do volunteer orientations.
03:00 And then if you want to donate to the barn or just to a pig like Captain Hook, you can
03:07 go to the website and you can find out all the details on how to do that.
03:11 You can pick a specific pig that you want to donate for.
03:13 Yeah.
03:14 You can sponsor a pig.
03:15 You can sponsor Captain Hook, and you sponsor him every month.
03:17 That's a donation that goes directly towards him.
03:20 Okay, so I noticed you were giving him some treats.
03:23 What is that?
03:24 What do pigs eat?
03:25 We got some dried mangoes right here.
03:27 Pigs eat a ton of potbelly pig food, hay, and then they love fruits and veggies.
03:32 That's their favorite.
03:33 So dried mangoes are the thing.
03:34 They love fruits and veggies.
03:35 Yes.
03:36 Oh, wow.
03:37 Okay, so they're actually healthy.
03:38 Could I feed him?
03:39 Of course.
03:40 Here you go.
03:41 So if I put this out, he'll just take it out of my hand?
03:42 Just give it to him right there, and he'll take a little bite.
03:45 Good job, Captain Hook.
03:46 He's the best boy.
03:47 He is so sweet.
03:48 All right, so betterpiggiesrescue.org.
03:49 Correct.
03:50 To learn more and to donate.
03:51 Yep, and they can go to any of our socials.
03:52 It's @betterpiggies.
03:53 Great.
03:54 This is so cool.
03:55 Thank you for being here and being our star, Captain Hook.
03:56 All right, guys, stick around, because we've got more of the mix coming up after this.
