00:00 It's a great day to be a Raider.
00:02 Today I have the privilege of introducing two young men that are going to be leading this organization into the future.
00:09 And I'm going to start off by introducing a new friend with a brand new name.
00:16 His name is Mr. Tom Telesco, the General Manager of the Las Vegas Raiders.
00:21 Tom, come on up.
00:23 [applause]
00:35 And now I'd like to introduce an old friend with a brand new name, Antonio Pierce, head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
00:45 [applause]
01:08 Got it?
01:14 So I'm going to let these two gentlemen introduce themselves to you, and then I'll let you ask some questions.
01:20 I suggest that you ask all the questions you want and make the right ones, because I don't think they're going to be talking to you too much after this.
01:27 They've got some work to do.
01:28 [laughter]
01:30 There you go.
01:31 Tom, come on up.
01:34 Thank you. Thanks everybody for coming, community and employees.
01:39 So first I just want to say thank you to Mark Davis.
01:44 This is such an iconic franchise with a story of history and obviously all stars with the legacy of L.L. Davis.
01:49 So I couldn't be more excited to be here, but also realize there's a tremendous responsibility with this job.
01:56 So the fact that Mark and the whole leadership team is trusting me with this, I couldn't be more happy to be a part of this.
02:04 So the last couple of weeks I've had a chance to meet a lot of the leadership team as we went through the interview process.
02:11 I'd like to thank obviously Mark was the leader of that process, but Sandra Moran and Larry Delson, Richard Seymour, who's right here,
02:22 Kenny Aarock, who's a legend in our business, and Tom Delaney.
02:27 So it was a great process, it was fun to go through, and I could kind of tell from the first interview there was a connection and a fit.
02:35 I think that's really important in this league to feel that, and I felt that the first time through.
02:41 And when I came back the second time when Antonio was in there, I kind of felt that same thing.
02:47 So it's so important to me and my family to be a part of the right fit in this league, and there's no doubt this is it.
02:54 And again, just really thankful that they saw the same thing in me, they saw that same fit, and that same culture fit.
03:00 And the other thing I'll say is, I haven't been here long, but when you talk about the Raider way, or the Raider tenets of commitment to excellence,
03:11 just win, baby, once a Raider, always a Raider.
03:14 I've heard of it, I know of it, I've seen it, but when we walk in this building, I mean you can feel it.
03:20 And I haven't been here long, but there is no doubt, I mean first of all you see it tangibly, I mean this football facility is jaw-dropping for me.
03:27 I've never seen anything like it, it's amazing, the resources are amazing here.
03:30 I have to credit to Mark Davis and what he's put into this team.
03:33 But you see that right off the bat.
03:35 But the second part is, and the Raiders are known for this as far as how they treat their alumni, how they treat their former players, how they treat their families.
03:44 And it is something that other NFL teams, and really all professional sports teams, they try and duplicate what they do here, but nobody does it like the Raiders.
03:52 And you can feel that in this building, you can feel it from the employee who played last night.
03:56 You know, 6 o'clock at night, my wife gets a call from Ainsley Moore, who works in football operations,
04:03 and she kind of gave my wife a rundown of what's going to go on today, what's going to go on in the future.
04:08 And she was so nice, so detailed, so organized.
04:11 My wife gets off the phone, she's like, "Bobby's" -- they've got it there, they know how it works.
04:17 And that's important.
04:18 You know, the winning championship is more than just the head coach and general manager, it takes everybody.
04:23 So to see someone like that right off the bat, you know, "Hey, this is how you treat people, and this is how organized and detailed we're going to be,"
04:30 which is a great example for the whole organization.
04:33 And then lastly, you know, I'm really excited to partner with AP right here.
04:40 You know, you can tell in the interview -- it's really my interview -- but you can tell, like, he has a leadership trait that a head coach has to have.
04:50 And it's really -- to me, it feels more like, you know, not so much follow me, but join me, which I like in football, because he's right in there with the rest of us.
04:59 And I think, you know, your football team takes on the identity of your head coach, and that's what we're going to have here, that's what we're going to build around.
05:08 I'm excited to start this partnership, and couldn't be more excited to be a Raider.
05:14 So I'll leave it at that, and I'll pass it over to our head coach.
05:17 [Applause]
05:24 I start off like I always do, at least I end in a great house here, a patch of red, you can see.
05:32 But we always end all our great drinks in a certain way in a locker room.
05:37 So we've got a packed house here.
05:39 Let's see how everybody's vocal cords work.
05:42 So stay with me.
05:43 Ready?
05:44 Raiders!
05:49 Yeah, now we warmed up.
05:51 See, that's what we're talking about.
05:53 My fellow peers, thank you, Tom, I appreciate it.
05:56 Thank you, Mark Davis, Sandra, Richard, Tom, Larry, Ken, Raiders organization, our coaches, our players.
06:08 I said at the very beginning I had an opportunity to speak in front of everybody the first time on November 1st.
06:13 I'm humbled, I'm honored.
06:16 I'm excited.
06:18 I'm excited.
06:20 The challenge that this team took on from November 1st on and what they embraced and what they displayed out in the field is hats off to our organization
06:31 and our coaches and our players for buying in.
06:33 It wasn't easy.
06:35 It was something that probably many people didn't think would happen, as you say, overnight.
06:41 But when you have good people in the building, when you have the belief, you have the trust, you have the accountability, you earn respect,
06:47 you do it the Raider way, you buy in, you understand that nobody's bigger than a shield and a patch,
06:54 and that you play for a lot more than just the name on your back.
06:58 There's a lot of people that we affect by wins and losses.
07:01 We understand that, and we don't take it lightly.
07:04 I'd like to thank my family here, Jocelyn, my father, Perry, my kids, my uncle in the back, Ken Lawrence from Bermuda, Bermuda, that's my--
07:12 [laughter]
07:14 I got the island people here, too, so appreciate everybody being here.
07:19 Where are we going forward?
07:20 The time has hit us.
07:22 It's great to partner up.
07:24 I think it's a partnership that we've been working for for many years.
07:27 Hopefully that comes with a lot of Ws and a lot of Raider chants.
07:31 Our vision is clear.
07:33 Win the division.
07:36 Get into the playoffs and host that Lombardi Trophy.
07:40 That's our promise.
07:42 That's our vision.
07:44 Our philosophy is simple.
07:46 It's real simple.
07:47 It's the regular way.
07:49 Pride, poise, passion, a love for the game, and just win.
07:59 It starts with our DNA, ill intent, physicality, toughness, speed, attitude, full-blown Max Crosby effort.
08:14 And it goes to our staff, the preparation and execution, and putting a plan together and executing throughout the week with a smile and a purpose to get a victory on every Sunday that we show up to a Legion stadium.
08:28 It's not going to be easy.
08:31 It's not going to be overnight.
08:33 I'm not promising anything along with Tom, but I do know this.
08:36 You're going to get the best out of myself and Tom.
08:38 We're going to exhaust every possible resource and ounce of sweat and tears and effort and night and minute and second that we have to turn this bad boy into a consistent winning organization that it's used to and it deserves.
08:53 One thing we know in the room is our alumni.
08:58 As you guys saw in the last game, open doors.
09:01 Post game is with them.
09:04 Raider Nation, that bad boy good.
09:08 That bad boy ready to rock.
09:10 He rocked the last game.
09:11 We set the tone in 2024 what it looked like going forward.
09:15 We're going to work this off season in the summer and in the fall until we get to that first home game to see Raider Nation again, loud, rowdy, making it tough for the opponent.
09:29 That black hole rocking and rolling.
09:31 The wing club doing its deal.
09:33 Mark Davis in there clapping his hands away, you know what I'm saying, high fiving, and put a product on the field that Raider Nation is really proud of.
09:43 And like I said before, I am humbled and honored to be a kid from inner city Los Angeles, to be the head coach of a team that you grew up watching, rooting for, cheering for, rocking the colors, rocking the starter jacket, and now sitting here doing each and every day with the purpose of one thing only, just winning.
10:03 Thank you.
10:05 [Applause]
10:12 >> And now we'll open up for questions from the media.
10:14 Please raise your hand.
10:15 Ashley and Jay are on each aisle here.
10:17 Please state your name and affiliation.
10:20 We'll start with Vinny.
10:25 >> Hey, Tom, congratulations.
10:27 >> Thanks, Vin.
10:28 >> To see you in Las Vegas.
10:30 From your perspective, your track record, your history, the respect that you have with the NFL, I'm sure there were other, you know, Harvard students out there for you.
10:36 What about this organization at this particular time?
10:39 Repeat your address.
10:41 >> I mean, it's kind of what I said from the beginning.
10:43 I mean, there's just such a storied history here and tradition.
10:47 I mean, you know, I grew up as a kid.
10:49 I was obviously a football fan, NFL fan, been in the league a long time.
10:53 To get a chance to be part of an organization with Al Davis' legacy, it's just like so exciting to have.
11:00 And then on top of that, when you look at the resources that are here and the head coach that's here, I think we can win.
11:08 That's why I want to be here.
11:10 That's what I'm really looking for.
11:11 One was fit.
11:12 I want to work with people that I like.
11:14 And two, I want to win.
11:16 Those two both go together, that we can win and work together and really enjoy this journey.
11:21 It is a tough journey.
11:22 It's a hard job.
11:23 We all know the pressure to come to the job.
11:25 But we can work side by side with a smile on our face and get things done.
11:28 So it was, you know, two things, find the right fit and a chance to win.
11:31 That's what we have here.
11:37 [Inaudible]
11:49 Yeah, staff.
11:50 I wouldn't even use the word consulted.
11:51 I mean, it's a partnership.
11:53 It's a partnership.
11:54 So obviously a lot of people are part of the process.
11:56 You've got scouting staff and coaching staff.
11:58 You kind of bring it all together in the end and make decisions.
12:02 But, you know, as far as building a roster, you know, you work it through the vision of the head coach.
12:06 You know, how do you want to play in offense?
12:07 How do you want to play in defense?
12:08 How do you want to play in special teams?
12:10 And you build it that way.
12:12 There's a lot of discussions.
12:13 You work through things.
12:15 You're going to be able to bounce ideas off each other.
12:18 As far as roster construction, there's no one specific way to build a team.
12:24 I do believe in a draft.
12:26 I mean, everybody always says that anyways, but I do believe in a draft.
12:29 But you also have to supplement that with resiliency.
12:31 You have to supplement that with training.
12:32 You have to supplement that with signing players maybe who are out of work or on the street looking for jobs
12:37 and thinking they're going to fit.
12:39 You have to use every possible avenue you can.
12:42 I think of the strengths of the starting cap, which is basically every move you make, even a draft pick,
12:47 there's always cash considerations that we have to work through.
12:51 But I think in this day and age, in this league, you better be flexible about how you build your team.
12:56 It's so competitive.
12:58 We all really have the same resource when it comes to money in the cap.
13:03 But, like I said, it's a partnership for a reason because it's not a one-person job,
13:07 and I don't have all the answers.
13:09 So we're going to use all these people that have scouts, coaches, and head coach,
13:12 and we're going to make the right decision for the Raiders.
13:15 Tom, two questions for you.
13:17 Hondo Carpenter, Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation.
13:19 Number one, most general managers, when you come in, it's a place in shambles.
13:25 AP has it rocking, has it rolling, and it's his team.
13:27 He's put his stamp on this franchise.
13:29 How big of a blessing is that to come in?
13:31 You're not looking, hoping to find a coach.
13:33 You've got them.
13:35 Yeah, quite honestly, when I entered this job, I didn't see this.
13:39 It was the head coach, the job was open.
13:41 I'm like, "He's the head coach."
13:44 AP came in on short notice and produced on the field.
13:49 Didn't do anything to not have the job, so he had the job at the end of the year.
13:52 He was the head coach when I came in and interviewed.
13:54 That's the way I kind of looked at it.
13:56 That's the way he galvanized the team and galvanized the building
14:00 and galvanized the fan base.
14:02 So that is a huge part of it because you have to get that right.
14:06 So to have that in place, obviously, yeah, a big part of taking this job
14:10 is to have that, to have a leader like this that we've already seen on the field
14:14 where he can do it.
14:15 So it's exciting.
14:16 Secondly, Drew Stanton told me, a mutual friend of ours last night,
14:19 that one of your strengths as a general manager is relationship,
14:24 that players can trust you in your word.
14:26 Will you talk about your philosophy of relationship with players, please?
14:31 Yeah, I mean, to me, a relationship with a player is no different than a relationship
14:34 with your family, with your friends.
14:35 I mean, you treat them well, you're honest with them.
14:39 It doesn't necessarily always mean that when you tell them they're going to like you,
14:42 but if you're honest with them, you're straight with them,
14:44 I think they appreciate that.
14:46 And, you know, what we'll do here, which I know they do already,
14:50 but these players, for us, they're not just a player we play home about.
14:53 I mean, they have families, they have lives off the field.
14:55 It's important to us to know that and work through that.
14:58 So, really, when you're in this spot and you're the head coach,
15:02 you have players out there battling for you every game, practicing games,
15:06 training room, weight room, and I realize that they're doing a good job,
15:10 but, I mean, you can't help but have, you know, relationships with those guys.
15:14 I mean, they're going to battle for you every week.
15:16 So that's the way this business is, the way football is.
15:18 That's why it's so great.
15:19 It's the greatest team sport in the world.
15:20 So, yeah, the players are important to me.
15:23 I have to make sure they know that we care.
15:24 I have to make sure they know that what they need, come see us,
15:28 because we'll see if we can get that done if our resources are born.
15:31 But, yeah, it's important.
15:32 I think everybody in here can be true to the players the way you treat your family.
15:37 Antonio, Bob Gutierrez here from ESPN.
15:41 Firstly, I don't know if you guys had a relationship before you set up in town,
15:44 but how quickly did you mention the 63 points you guys put on the chargers?
15:49 [Laughter]
15:50 I know, man, you know it.
15:52 Tom was going for 71, because I'm going for two in the convention.
15:55 [Laughter]
15:57 But also, how important is it to you as a young coach, relatively young coach,
16:01 to have a guy who's been a GM for a decade already in the program?
16:04 Yeah, me and Tom had never met prior.
16:06 Obviously, I watched his body of work with the San Diego Chargers,
16:11 but then this didn't last through to the Los Angeles Chargers.
16:15 But obviously, when we met, when he came in the other day,
16:17 I could see that he was genuine, he was poised, he was calm, he had a plan,
16:22 he presented it, it was well thought out.
16:25 He knows I was poking at him, trying to get him going,
16:27 trying to get that AP juice out of him, but he stayed very poker-faced,
16:31 which was like, "Okay, cool, that's good."
16:34 But I think as this relationship grows, like anything else,
16:37 it's going to have its ups and downs.
16:39 We've got to be adults and bro-man about it.
16:41 We've got to hash it out.
16:43 We've got to understand our roles, check our equals at the door,
16:45 and we do everybody else's ability, but understand that we've got a plan.
16:48 That plan is to do it together, be hand-in-hand with it.
16:51 Obviously, if he goes down, I go down.
16:53 That's just how it is.
16:54 That's the nature of the beast.
16:55 We get it.
16:56 But that's not our plan.
16:57 Our plan is to win, to team a place that is competitive each and every week
17:01 and give ourselves an opportunity to win.
17:05 Appreciate the question, though.
17:07 [laughter]
17:08 I did tell him that, right?
17:09 We talked about that together.
17:11 He didn't see Jack's play, though, right?
17:13 I told him, "All right, can I tell you the story?"
17:15 He said, "What? Where did it go?"
17:16 So, anyway.
17:17 [laughter]
17:18 So, yeah, you know, I was getting mad.
17:20 I'm coming down the elevator, and we're at score-wise,
17:24 and we're pushing on defense, and he says, "In the elevator."
17:27 And I think Jack Johnson just intercepted the ball while he was up there.
17:30 I'm like, "Why? Why? That's enough."
17:32 [laughter]
17:34 But we talked about it, hashed it out, and said, "No, no, no,
17:36 we'll do that now so we have the ball."
17:39 Congratulations to these guys who are the Las Vegas Rangers.
17:42 Obviously, you've been with the league for a long time.
17:44 Could you give a little bit of a skyrocket for Antonio Pierce as a player,
17:48 what you believe in, all those qualifications,
17:51 and those qualities that you have as a player,
17:53 what do you think would translate or does translate to him as a coach?
17:55 You know, that's a great question.
17:57 If you look at his career, you know, back to high school,
18:01 where junior college first, then goes to Division I, linebacker,
18:05 then undrafted, and then wins a starting job and has a career he had,
18:08 obviously, he's a grinder.
18:09 He works because nothing was given to him, which, yeah, you can hang your head on that
18:14 as a head coach because if a lot of players are in your roster,
18:17 they're the same way.
18:19 Not everyone in your roster is, you know, Dante Adams.
18:22 So to have that mentality, that dog mentality that I'm going to outwork people,
18:28 it's great to have.
18:30 So now my Sky report on him, I may have to go look at that.
18:33 I know, I lost track.
18:34 I may have to go look that up.
18:36 He had a couple games with the Colts.
18:37 I know it's way back.
18:38 I think my files are gone from the Colts.
18:40 But, no, he was a player to be reckoned with for a long time because of his instincts,
18:44 his smarts, and he could grind with the football.
18:47 So as you look at a defensive player, you can just point to the head coach,
18:50 hey, if you play like him, you can play for us.
18:55 Dick Daffer from the Atlantic.
18:57 I'm going to ask both of you guys, Mark mentioned his work with the Dug,
19:00 I wonder what you guys look for in an offensive coordinator.
19:08 I look for 24 points.
19:10 [Laughter]
19:13 No, I'll be honest.
19:15 Just like everything else that we've done throughout this process,
19:17 I honestly believe this.
19:19 I don't think everybody's meant to be for the Raiders.
19:21 I don't think everybody's meant to play for the Raiders or coach for the Raiders.
19:23 I think that's going to be something I really dig into as we go into that process.
19:28 I think it's important to run this.
19:31 The way the game is, you know, AP wants to run the ball.
19:34 No, AP just wants to run the style of football,
19:36 and run the ball the football style a certain way.
19:39 But it's the approach.
19:41 It's being a teacher.
19:42 It's being somebody who's standing in front of this room and the man that's looking at him,
19:45 like you're looking at me, that they believe in the play and the process,
19:49 and that they're a teacher, and that they can adjust on the fly, right,
19:53 because that's what this game is about.
19:55 The way we play, I think that's all that's going to vary.
19:57 There's a lot of things that go into that, right?
19:59 We know that we have some positions on the roster that we need to look at
20:02 and evaluate even more, telling myself as we go forward.
20:07 But you know what you want?
20:08 You want to see the national football game.
20:09 You've got to be able to run the football for the national pass,
20:11 and you've got to be able to run the Raiders' number four, the vertical passing game, right?
20:14 So we want to see the shots that we feel.
20:15 We want the explosive plays.
20:17 So that has to be a part of the creativity.
20:20 You know, you look at the shifts, the motion, all that stuff goes into it.
20:23 I don't know how to weigh your chip, but just think of when Raiders
20:26 were playing really good football, and that's when you're off to the court
20:28 and you're not afraid to go forward.
20:32 Do I have another question?
20:34 I'll just go with this answer.
20:37 I think the one thing I talked about in the interview is you want to have an identity.
20:42 The Raiders have an identity on offense.
20:45 It's speeding at the ball down the field.
20:46 So I think that's definitely going to be at least part of that.
20:49 But there's more that goes along with that.
20:52 As far as being able to run the ball, we have to run it, play extra pass.
20:55 But we'll find the right offensive coordinator that's going to fit this team at this time.
21:00 Q Myers, Red Nation Radio, 920.
21:02 On top of that being said, with it being the end of January,
21:05 how do you attack this offseason knowing the draftsman around the corner?
21:09 And how important is it that you're coming from the AFC West
21:11 so you have familiarity with the division already?
21:14 Yeah, I think it helps.
21:15 I mean, like you said, the first goal is winning the division.
21:19 So I do have some experience there.
21:22 Yeah, it's going to be, you know, thankfully the drafts in April,
21:25 we have some time, but we have a lot of work to do.
21:27 I need to get caught up with our guys here.
21:31 And more than likely what I'll do, I'll kind of adjust to them from here through April
21:34 rather than having, you know, 10, 15, 20 people adjusting me.
21:37 So we'll start on that this morning.
21:40 We'll get moving on that.
21:41 But I'm looking forward to really getting in depth with the pro staff, the college staff.
21:46 But we got plenty of time.
21:48 We'll be good.
21:50 AP, the last time we spoke to you, you talked about not enjoying the moment.
21:55 You were just grinding.
21:57 So can you take us in that moment after Mark told you you got the job,
22:01 your dream had been reached, that first time you had to reflect after you got it.
22:05 Can you take us into those moments and your thoughts, please?
22:08 Yeah.
22:10 I did probably like I did on October 31st when I got the first phone call.
22:14 I walked outside to our practice field and just looked around.
22:17 It was quiet.
22:18 It was dark.
22:20 You know, we had the stars just kind of looking up there and just saying, "Wow, it's surreal."
22:27 And then just really taking in the moment.
22:29 And as you can tell, enjoying the moment, right?
22:32 Today's a celebration.
22:34 Today's the first step.
22:35 You remember what I said when I first got in front of you, I said, "My worst days will be mine."
22:40 First step.
22:41 Well, this is my first day.
22:43 This is going to be my best day, and I'm going to celebrate it.
22:45 I'm going to enjoy it.
22:46 I'm going to have fun with it because I know there's going to be some ups and downs.
22:49 There's going to be some days where you're going to go high in the corner and no one will talk to you about it.
22:54 That's why when I first got the call from Mark, I went outside by myself and looked up to the sky.
23:06 Casey for Las Vegas Sun, congratulations to both of you guys.
23:09 Tom, I know you said it's going to be part of the process to really dig into what you have here.
23:13 I'm sure some of that's already started, just getting ready for the interviews and things.
23:17 What's it about all these rosters and some of the decisions you'll have to make coming up?
23:22 Yeah, I'll tell you, the one thing that's kind of jumped to me, like obviously in the division, I know the Raiders pretty well,
23:27 but I know them as an opponent, which is just completely different than knowing this team from being in this building,
23:33 you know, the practices every day, everything that goes into being a football player at this level.
23:37 So I've got a lot of learning to do right now to get up to speed with everything in the building and then get up to speed with the whole roster.
23:44 It's just a big difference knowing them as opponents and knowing them as the GM of this team.
23:49 So a hell of a lot of work to do coming up here.
23:52 But thankfully AP's here, so that's going to make the transition a lot smoother.
23:56 I'm Mark Anderson, Associated Press.
23:59 Three of them, one of you.
24:01 People always wonder about the quarterback.
24:03 What's your evaluation of Nathan?
24:04 What do you think of his position going forward?
24:07 Yeah, I would say, like what I just said before, it's like I have a lot of learning to do to figure out this team from the inside, not from the outside.
24:14 I was able to play pretty well against us, so that's a plus.
24:18 But I need to get a lot more in-depth with this team as far as more than just a couple games and then talk with the staff.
24:24 So we need to do that at every position.
24:26 And that's really probably number one, at least for me.
24:30 I need to know this team as well as I knew the team I just came from, which I don't know, but I'm going to get there pretty quick.
24:37 I thought you saw growth today, John.
24:39 I thought they didn't see Nathan playing some really good football.
24:41 Obviously, that led to some wins for us.
24:43 But taking care of the football, being responsible, being more vocal, I think he put himself in a position to learn what it's like to be a pro.
24:50 Obviously, he doesn't need to reflect on what he just did, right?
24:52 If he didn't have those opportunities, he would never know what mistakes he made.
24:56 So I think it's a great learning tool for him.
24:58 Now that we have him on the field, like Tom said, to evaluate it and really look at it going forward.
25:03 Antonio, Defense American, NBC Las Vegas.
25:06 Now that it's come to fruition, what did it mean to you, just the support that you got from the guys in the locker room, pushing for you to get this job?
25:12 Yeah, I mean, there's nothing like it.
25:14 The reason the National Football League is the greatest sport in America is because of the players.
25:20 And when most of the time the players speak, we listen.
25:24 The players play, we watch.
25:25 And they did both this year.
25:27 So to have that support, being a former player, to understand what it's like.
25:31 And now the way in the day, the age we're in, where your voice matters, we have a lot of platforms to do it.
25:38 You just got to be careful.
25:39 You got to be careful.
25:40 We love the support.
25:41 We're never taking it too far.
25:42 But it was humbling.
25:44 It was a special moment.
25:48 But it was even more special when you get the phone call from Mr. Davis that you're the head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders.
25:55 More questions, guys?
25:58 Okay.
25:59 Thank you, gentlemen.
26:00 Thanks for coming.
26:01 We'll meet you this afternoon.
