00:00 For Bama Central.com, I'm Matthew Gibson.
00:02 That's Will Miller and this is just a minute.
00:05 Alabama's golfer Nick Dunlap is victorious at the American Express 29 under.
00:11 Will, first, he's the first amateur golfer since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win on tour.
00:17 Now he has a decision to make.
00:19 Turn pro or stay at Alabama?
00:22 What do you think this means for Dunlap and what do you think he has to weigh here a little
00:25 bit?
00:26 Well, the question everybody's asking is how'd that Phil Mickelson guy end up turning out?
00:33 The last guy to win as an amateur on tour before Nick Dunlap just did it yesterday.
00:39 And yeah, this is a big decision and like anything, there's benefits and drawbacks to
00:48 either one, whether he wants to stay in college or whether he wants to go ahead and turn pro.
00:55 We'll see.
00:56 Dunlap's already had some great success.
00:58 He did win the US amateur and he already gets some things from that.
01:04 And now he's pretty much shocked the golf world by winning a tour event as a college
01:11 student, which is an incredible moment in history for him, his team, his family, coaches.
01:18 And it's a great moment.
01:21 He'll never forget it.
01:22 The golf world will be talking about it for a very long time.
01:25 But I think in terms of his decision, I'm not sure I read your piece on his comments.
01:33 And the main thing that didn't shock me was that he didn't plan on doing his homework
01:39 from last night.
01:41 But that's far more cut and dried in this decision he faces about his future.
01:46 So I'm really not certain what he's going to do.
01:49 Yeah, no, there's a lot to consider there.
01:53 If he chooses to go pro, he would have to regain that exemption towards the US Open.
02:03 And he's got a lot to consider in terms of his time at Alabama, too.
02:08 He mentioned it last night in the post-match press conference that he still feels like
02:14 there's a little bit of unfinished business there and that turning pro isn't the only
02:17 goal that he's had.
02:18 He mentioned that he already completed one with winning the junior amateur and US amateur.
02:23 But another one was to win a national title at Alabama with Jay Sewell there at the helm.
02:30 And I think it's a little bit more of a difficult decision than would appear on the surface.
02:39 This isn't just going to be one of those things where I'm automatically like, OK, he wins
02:42 this round.
02:43 You have to turn pro.
02:44 I think there's a genuine possibility that Dunlap comes back and stays another year at
02:50 Alabama for his junior year next year.
02:53 He's only 20 years old.
02:55 And there's some benefits there to remaining an amateur.
03:00 I think one of those things, too, is also NIL.
03:02 He's going to have an opportunity to get some NIL funding from Alabama and whatever it may
03:07 be and still have time just as it costs.
03:11 This is a guy that was homeschooled through high school.
03:14 Golf was everything to him.
03:16 It still is.
03:17 But there's some things there that would keep Nick, I think, in the fold for Alabama that
03:23 he has to now weigh a little bit.
03:26 Well, I think the bottom line is that you nailed it.
03:29 Is that it's not as readily apparent as some people might think it is.
03:34 And I can understand the optics of, of course, he'd want to turn pro because he just went
03:38 on tour as a 20-year-old kid and seems like either way the sky's the limit for this guy.
03:45 People have been raving about him.
03:47 He's racked up some big wins like we've touched on throughout the segment.
03:51 And either way, I think that's going to continue.
03:55 This guy's an absolute prodigy.
03:58 And things are only getting started.
04:00 So like I said, we'll see what happens.
04:02 But I think that you pretty much hit the nail on the head by saying it's not as obvious
04:07 as it might appear to some people.
04:11 For BabySentral.com, I'm Matthew Gibson.
04:13 That's Will Miller.
04:14 Thanks for watching.
