00:05 I'm Blake Beiler here with Katie Windham.
00:07 And Katie, we're going to talk a little bit about the transfer portal and how really since
00:12 Nick Saban's retirement, Alabama has had a lot of players enter the transfer portal.
00:17 We know that following a coach exiting a program, there's a 30 day window that opens up for
00:24 players to be able to transfer even after the normal transfer portal window has closed.
00:29 So Katie, just to get your thoughts, what do you think about this 30 day window?
00:34 Do you think it's too long?
00:35 Do you think it needs to be shorter?
00:36 Do you think it's fair?
00:37 What are some of your thoughts about the current state of the transfer portal window when a
00:43 coach leaves?
00:44 Yeah, this is really spurring an interesting discussion because it's something that obviously
00:49 Alabama fans aren't used to after the stability Nick Saban provided over the last, you know,
00:55 almost two decades and really the transfer portal in general rules have kind of changed
00:59 over the last couple years.
01:01 So seeing this many players leave is, you know, you've gotten used to a certain number
01:05 leaving but obviously with Saban leaving or retiring, there's even more guys that are
01:09 going in like today's news that Caleb Downs plans to that obviously would not have left
01:14 the program if Saban was still the head coach.
01:16 And so right now it doesn't seem super fair to Alabama fans that the regular portal is
01:21 closed and so they can't go get whoever they want, but that anyone can come get their guys
01:26 for literally a month.
01:28 It is a little bit long.
01:30 I think we were kind of discussing that kind of on the beat yesterday that this is longer
01:35 than that two week window at the end of the season.
01:37 It's a long time for guys to make decisions.
01:40 I don't think most of them will drag it out until 30 days.
01:44 But you know, it does seem a little unfair right now.
01:46 But I do think there should be something a place that guys have an opportunity to leave
01:50 schools when a coaching change happens because they committed to play for a certain guy.
01:54 A lot of times a lot of them aren't necessarily.
01:59 Obviously we've seen super loyal to a certain school.
02:01 It's the coach they're going to play for.
02:02 So like I get it.
02:05 And also it'll balance itself out a little bit as more coaching changes happen.
02:10 Like you mentioned before we started filming if Jim Harbaugh takes a job in the NFL, well
02:13 then Michigan's roster will be open and presumably a pretty big name head coach will take the
02:18 Michigan job and then their roster will be open for 30 days.
02:22 So there will be opportunities for Alabama to kind of fill their roster back up and Kalen
02:27 DeBoer to kind of get that going.
02:29 But there is going to be a little bit of attrition on the Crimson Tide roster or maybe more than
02:34 a little bit over the next couple of weeks as guys continue to enter the transfer portal
02:39 and Kalen DeBoer will certainly have his work cut out for him.
02:43 Yeah, definitely.
02:44 I think it seems a little maybe unfair right now because Alabama is really the only major
02:50 roster that is kind of available for teams to be able to poach players from, especially
02:57 a program and a roster that's the caliber as Alabama.
03:01 And like we talked before we started recording that like Alabama fans haven't had to experience
03:07 this kind of instability because of what they've had with Nick Saban over the past 17 years.
03:11 And so it's very different and something that Alabama fans haven't had to experience yet
03:16 with a bunch of players being open to just leaving and going wherever.
03:22 It's definitely going to be interesting.
03:23 I think there have to be some changes that take place, but I'm just not sure what because
03:29 like you said, I agree that players should have the opportunity to leave if a coach leaves
03:36 because they committed to play for a certain coach.
03:39 But I'm not sure exactly what the solution is.
03:41 It's definitely an interesting discussion and one that will continue to be had over
03:48 the 30 days over this 30 day window for Alabama and other potential 30 day windows for other
03:53 teams as the coaching carousel continues throughout this college football offseason.
03:58 But I think that's going to wrap it up for today.
