00:00 Last year, the SAG Afters and Writers Strikes happened.
00:05 So, nominations for the Emmys actually came out in June last year,
00:10 scheduled for a September awards show.
00:13 Of course, when these strikes happened,
00:15 Hollywood and the television industry were put to a standstill.
00:18 So, the Television Academy, understandably,
00:21 decided to move the awards to...
00:24 Yeah, I mean, it took a while with negotiations.
00:26 Actors were picketing and campaigning till around November.
00:30 So, the awards now are in line with the rest of the awards season.
00:34 What's really interesting about the timing of these as well
00:37 is that when it comes to the nominations,
00:40 we're looking at TV shows that aired from June 2022 to May 2023,
00:46 because nominations came out in June last year.
00:49 The members as well who were voting, the jury,
00:53 they all voted in August last year.
00:56 So, when it comes to shows that are nominated now,
00:58 I mean, we look at The Bear, for example.
01:00 They're all nominated today at the Emmys for season one.
01:04 That happened a long time ago, not season two,
01:06 for which they won Golden Globes Awards
01:08 and Critics' Choice Awards just yesterday.
01:11 So, we could be seeing, I guess, some almost surprise winners
01:15 because these shows were essentially so old.
01:19 That's it, and people will be like, "Oh, my God, yeah,
01:21 "I watched that a while back and now it's winning."
01:24 But, yeah, lots of changes in the industry
01:26 and that's how it's rolled out.
01:28 You mentioned the Golden Globes.
01:30 They copped a bit of flack last week for some jokes that fell flat.
01:35 Who is hosting the Emmys this week
01:38 and should we have higher expectations for the host?
01:43 So, last week was Joe Coy. He did get a bit of backlash.
01:46 Today, for the Emmys, we've got Anthony Anderson.
01:49 So, maybe not as familiar to Aussie audiences,
01:52 but he has starred on the long-running US sitcom Black-ish
01:57 as well as the spin-offs Grown-ish and More-ish.
02:01 And actor and stand-up comedian.
02:04 I loved him. Great sense of humour to start off with, which is promising.
02:07 He said that, "I was over the moon
02:09 "when I heard that Taylor Swift is not available.
02:11 "I can't wait to be part of television's biggest nights."
02:15 So, starting with a positive Taylor Swift joke
02:18 is obviously going to get him in better stead
02:21 than the Golden Globes last week.
02:23 Yeah, absolutely.
02:24 Which copped a bit of flack for a poor Taylor Swift joke.
02:27 We've got a lot of Australian actors and actresses up for awards at the Emmys.
02:32 Talk us through some of the nominees
02:34 and who we can expect to be taking home the trophies.
02:37 I think it's no surprise that Sarah Snook from Succession
02:40 is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.
02:44 In those two films have absolutely reigned, you know,
02:46 Hollywood season and movies in general.
02:49 So, Oppenheimer took home eight awards.
02:51 We've got Best Director, Christopher Nolan, Best Picture,
02:54 Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor
02:57 and for Barbie, of course, Best Comedy.
02:59 And this was my favourite, Best Song for I'm Just Ken.
03:02 Ryan Gosling's expression at the end, you know, when it was announced.
03:06 I think he was even surprised. He was so surprised.
03:09 I think he thought it was going to go to Billie Eilish,
03:11 which I think a lot of us did. I know, but, I mean, good on them.
03:14 And we loved Barbie this season, this awards season.
03:17 So, yeah, I think it's really exciting and bring on the rest of awards season.
