00:00 [crowd cheering]
00:02 lads listen up, you both know the rules, you'll obey my commands at all times
00:06 when I tell you to break, break cleanly, take a step back and throw no punches
00:10 keep your heads out of the way and most importantly gentlemen, protect yourself at all times, shake hands
00:14 so this is the first of two professional debuts on the card tonight
00:19 21 year old Charlie Hickford from Rochester in Kent
00:22 he's known as classy Charlie, he's got good support in here tonight
00:26 and he's up against Jake Pollard who's having his 16th fight of 2023
00:31 for the big night for Charlie Hickford
00:33 and I've got to say he's got good support in the building, Richie
00:37 and he seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself in there with the introductions and everything
00:41 yes he certainly did, came into the ring very confident indeed
00:44 or he appeared that way, good crowd support
00:48 and yeah he started off pretty quick and sharp
00:51 so interesting, Roman Hickford against a very experienced man who's coming
00:57 what is he, 2 days notice, proper warrior Jake Pollard
01:02 yeah 2 days notice and you will see the name Roman on the front of Jake Pollard's shorts tonight
01:09 that's his son and he's using tonight's fight
01:12 he's going to use the money that he gets this evening to take him and his son to Lapland for Christmas
01:17 so there's a lovely story behind him taking the fight at short notice
01:21 and being part of this card here at York Hall tonight
01:24 and the one caveat you might just put in there, that there are high hopes for Charlie Hickford
01:28 the only victory that Pollard has on his record
01:31 is a victory against Lewis Smithson in what was his 50th fight
01:35 it was Smithson's debut that night so he's beaten Davidson before
01:39 and Hickford's got to make sure he doesn't fall foul of that here tonight
01:42 exactly, yeah he's got a job to do here
01:45 and Pollard knows he's in against a classic kid, that's why he's got that nice tight high guard
01:50 and it will be, the result for Hickford tonight will be if he can try and stop Pollard
01:56 that's easier said than done, he's a tough guy
01:59 but we shall see
02:01 he's only been stopped 4 times remember in the 55 defeats, so he's a hard man
02:06 and Hickford certainly has got lots and lots of skills, lots of talent
02:09 but that will be the challenge if he can force a stoppage
02:12 Hickford nice and silky there, he's settled into a nice early rhythm here on his professional debut
02:17 he is a stylist, they call him classy Charlie, you can see why
02:23 and he looks like he wants to put a show on in there tonight
02:26 and he's very very confident in there, a little shake of the feet, little shuffle
02:30 mixing the punches up, throwing with either hand
02:32 carries his hands quite low but that's a sign of his confidence there
02:35 yeah confidence, he's got a bit of skill and talent hasn't he
02:38 he's on notice occasionally to sidestep and go down with a left hook to the body
02:43 so yes he's got good variation
02:46 and now just switching to southpaw as well
02:49 so yes he's a talented boxer
02:51 it's been a really nice opening round for him, he tried to swing a bolo punch in there as well didn't he
02:56 showboating already and why not
02:58 wants to enjoy his big night against this durable journeyman
03:02 who will take a fight, a 2 day notice, 16th fight of 2023
03:07 and he's a man who certainly does things the hard way in this game, Jake Pollard
03:12 Hickford putting his punches together nicely, being roared on by the crowd when he's done it here tonight
03:17 they say he's probably sold around 250 tickets
03:20 and they've been a very vocal presence since he made his way to the ring
03:24 yeah good support, just really showing his talent and his class here
03:28 as Hickford keeps switching waterboxer southpaw
03:31 so he's a natural switch hitter and he's enjoying himself
03:36 so there's the first round in the books in the professional career of Charlie Hickford
03:42 I am Invictus

04:14 Welcome back to York Hall here in Bethnal Green
04:21 and we're watching the professional debut of 21 year old Charlie Hickford
04:26 from Kent, when you think about the difference in experience in there tonight Richie
04:30 Pollard's now fought 233 rounds
04:33 and that's one in the bag for Charlie Hickford
04:36 it's also worth pointing out that Pollard has zero stoppages in those 233 rounds as a professional
04:43 he's a tough pro isn't he Pollard
04:46 but he's up against a very skillful man here in Hickford
04:50 Pollard just can't get close enough at the moment
04:52 so he's keeping that guard nice and high and trying to block what he can on the gloves and on the elbows
04:58 so he just can't close the gap sufficiently enough to land a shot at the moment Pollard
05:04 so looking nice and snickered there, he's a decent amateur
05:10 lost in the 2020 youth championship final to Billy Adams
05:13 who makes his professional debut next here on the card at York Hall
05:18 his dad Steve, boxing the reps in clubs, so boxing runs in the family
05:22 and he's been putting the punches together nicely here on his professional debut
05:27 the green and white trimmed with gold for Charlie Hickford
05:30 and the red and white, the cross of St George on the trunks of the Bradford man Jake Pollard
05:35 who's 10 years older than the man on debut in there tonight
05:38 good work again from Hickford
05:41 and like what I see here, he's hitting the target, just maintaining that gap
05:44 and there right on cue he did it
05:46 as Pollard just tries to come forward
05:49 Pollard, like I've said, can't get close enough
05:52 but Hickford keeps adjusting his feet so he's creating space and then he's hitting in those gaps
05:58 so yeah, it's good boxing, he's got good timing here Hickford
06:01 he's mixing up the attacks to head and body nicely as well
06:05 I suppose there can be a tendency on a night like this when you're full of adrenaline to go headhunting
06:10 but he's sticking to the plan isn't he and mixing his shots nicely
06:13 yeah, some good shots getting through now
06:16 Pollard will just hope that Hickford may just get complacent, gets too close, drops his hands
06:23 but it's not happening at this stage
06:26 Hickford is outworking Pollard by far
06:29 Pollard, like I said, is struggling with the distance and not letting anything on Hickford
06:41 the referee will be starting to look now Fletch
06:44 because there's nothing coming back at all from Pollard
06:47 the referee will be taking a look here, Hickford just keeps controlling things here
06:53 the pace, the tempo, it's all with Hickford
06:56 all of the punches as Richie says being landed by Charlie Hickford
07:04 and it's just that tight guard and pure survival for Pollard
07:08 with a long punch there that just snapped his head back a little bit
07:12 Hickford's had it all of his own way here and down goes Pollard
07:20 and that's the volume of shots that he's taken
07:23 I think he's suggesting to Kieran McCann that he might have been pushed to the canvas
07:28 but the referee didn't see it that way
07:30 and it's a standing eight count right at the end of this second round
07:33 and the first time that Hickford as a professional has had his opponents on the canvas Richie
07:37 and there's the bell
07:39 terrific second round again from Pickford
07:45 exactly, that was no fucking knockdown
07:48 where's your gun shield?
07:50 yeah, me and Zari
07:52 yeah I'm alright
07:54 listen relax, that eye, even if you put your cock up there
07:58 it's not bleeding, it's that little coming out of it
08:01 you're okay? yeah
08:03 you feel the power of it?
08:05 erm, it's just, it's just keeps on firing, keeps on firing
08:09 yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
08:11 yeah, just a good way to do it
08:14 it's just a solid line on the right
08:18 corner, ten seconds
08:27 seconds up, count three
08:35 so this one scheduled for four at featherweight
08:38 into the third round, Pollard down with a standing eight count in the second
08:42 and immediately here at the start of the third round
08:45 it's normal service resumed and Hickford throwing all of the shots
08:48 and Pollard's caught there by a right hand
08:50 and went down again
08:52 no count this time but there's nothing he can do here to keep Hickford off
08:55 no he's getting picked off at range
08:57 and then occasionally you'll see Pollard just run forward very quickly
09:00 and try and close the gap down
09:02 but, but, I've said before Hickford's maintaining the gap
09:05 and as he's coming forward he's walking onto shots
09:08 and then Hickford's going back again and
09:10 it's all Hickford isn't it?
09:12 and Pollard, no matter what Pollard tries
09:15 he just can't get through with anything
09:17 and he's getting picked off
09:19 left, right and centre here
09:21 remember this is the 57th fight of Jake Pollard's career
09:25 only stopped four times
09:27 and Hickford wanting to make a statement here
09:30 after his professional debut
09:32 he'd love to get a stoppage here on opening night
09:34 and it could come up quite soon here
09:36 if Pollard, you know, is showing a few signs
09:39 a bit distressed in there
09:41 but he's taking some big shots here
09:43 he's a tough bloke
09:45 and that's a cracking shot right through the middle
09:47 with the uppercut there
09:48 really accurate
09:49 and he's been very fluid in there
09:51 right from the opening bell
09:52 putting his punches together impressively
09:54 really enjoying himself in there tonight
09:56 landing hurtful punches and lots of them
09:58 must be nothing whatsoever coming back from Pollard
10:00 yeah that was a good little combination there
10:02 a reverse one too
10:04 starts off with the backhand and then finishes on the lead
10:06 and did Pickford
10:08 he's just, you know, he's getting tired now Pollard is
10:14 and that's because of the punches that he's taken
10:17 tough guy, proud man
10:20 certainly won't want to be stopped in there
10:22 by this 21 year old
10:24 classic Charlie Hickford
10:26 Hickford
10:28 heading towards the final minute
10:32 of the penultimate round
10:33 scheduled for 4
10:34 and fed away every round
10:36 has taken a familiar pattern
10:37 Kieran McCan is almost pleading with Pollard
10:39 to throw some punches back
10:41 nothing coming back at all
10:43 again it won't be too long
10:45 the referee
10:47 will be coming back
10:48 totally dominant display isn't it from Hickford
10:51 good credit to Pollard
10:54 tough bloke
10:56 extremely continues to
10:58 let his punches go here
11:01 Hickford
11:03 20 seconds to go in the third
11:08 extremely comfortable in there
11:10 looks the part tonight doesn't he
11:14 yes he's
11:16 showing great variation in his work
11:18 head, body, uppercuts, hooks
11:23 lots of skill
11:25 in this young Charlie Hickford
11:27 and tonight Fletcher's been punched perfect
11:31 final few seconds here in the third round
11:35 the pressure continues to come from Hickford
11:37 and there's the bell
11:40 I am Invictus
11:42 I am
11:44 I am
11:46 I am
11:48 the masculine fragrance
11:50 Invictus by Rabanne
11:53 one, two, three
11:55 oh
11:57 oh
12:00 oh
12:03 oh
12:05 hello
12:07 yeah, yeah, alright, you're ok yeah
12:14 I'm alright, I'm fine, you alright?
12:16 good, good, good
12:18 back to your call
12:20 the order of Jake Pollard
12:22 who is going to come out here
12:24 for the final round
12:26 he's done everything right so far
12:28 tonight though Richard Charlie Hickford
12:30 yes he has
12:32 up until now
12:34 it's been a really dominant three rounds here
12:38 from Hickford
12:40 very skillful man indeed
12:42 and a big future
12:46 he's a qualified electrician just in case boxing doesn't work out
12:48 for him
12:50 Dan Woolidge in his corner who trains the
12:52 Itauma brothers Moses and Carol
12:54 is being guided by Francis Warren as he
12:56 embarks on his professional career
12:58 tonight
13:00 I suppose the only thing left for him this evening is to
13:02 get himself a stoppage in this final round
13:04 but you can only
13:06 beat those in front of you and you can
13:08 only beat them in the manner that you're able to
13:10 and he's not really put a foot wrong all night
13:12 has he? He's boxed really well
13:14 what will be on Jake Pollard's
13:16 mind now? He's just to get through
13:18 this contest let's really hear the
13:20 final bell. He's just going through the gears
13:22 now Pollard, down goes
13:24 Hickson rather, just going
13:26 down again there Pollard, I think he's just absolutely
13:28 shattered in there Richie
13:30 isn't he? I mean he's been down for the standing
13:32 eight and Kieran McCann is
13:34 saying to him again look if you give me
13:36 an excuse to stop it that's exactly what
13:38 I'm going to do
13:40 Hickford must know here that he's only
13:42 maybe one serious barrage away from
13:44 getting a stoppage victory tonight
13:46 throughout the contest Pollard
13:48 has got that guard really high he's trying
13:50 to block the shots
13:52 that are coming forward, clocking the good punches
13:54 getting through now from Hickford
13:56 going through the gears, looking for the
13:58 gaps and he's
14:00 scoring well
14:02 Pollard again, just tying him up
14:04 and doing
14:06 his job, that's what gentlemen do
14:08 yeah not to put too far
14:10 the point of it Hickford's won every
14:12 second of every round
14:14 to this point
14:16 halfway through the final round, the fourth round here
14:20 at Federweight Hickford continues to put the punches
14:22 together impressively, he's being urged on by
14:24 his corner, they want the stoppage in there
14:26 for him tonight as well
14:28 Pollard continues to hang on, continues to have those
14:32 gloves high
14:34 Hickford continues to throw shots
14:36 and snap his head back with great regularity
14:40 the ice on the cane there would be to get the stoppage
14:42 for Hickford
14:44 but Pollard
14:46 has got a different agenda, he just wants to get
14:48 to the end of this one, lose on points
14:50 and that's a respectable night's work
14:52 for someone who's come in at two days notice
14:54 good shot right hand, just had Pollard
14:56 wobbling back towards the ropes
14:58 he was caught on the way out there by Hickford
15:00 that was a lovely shot, yes
15:02 bit of class there from Hickford, good punch
15:04 30 seconds to go
15:06 solid jab from Hickford
15:08 then the right hand as well
15:10 every time Pollard looks to throw a punch himself
15:12 he's completely tagged
15:14 that's why he's had his hands so high all night
15:16 because he can't deal with the speed of Hickford
15:18 no, he can't deal with the speed, the different angles
15:20 and even with that tight guard
15:22 the shots are getting through here and there
15:24 and then when he switches to the body also
15:26 he's effective
15:28 he's got a good shot
15:30 he's got a good shot
15:32 he's effective
15:34 but looks like Jake Pollard
15:36 is going to hear that final bell
15:38 and that's a, you know, daft as it may sound
15:40 that's a good result for him
15:42 thinking he's only come in at two days notice
15:44 well there's the final bell
15:46 and it's going to be a victory
15:48 on opening night for Charlie Hickford
15:50 and what a way to earn a trip to Lapland
15:52 for you and your son, such bravery
15:54 shown in there by Jake Pollard
15:56 very brave indeed, that's what dads do I suppose
15:58 Fletch and Jake Pollard
16:00 certainly earned
16:02 his money tonight
16:04 for his son, but yes a good
16:06 display from Charlie Hickford, really showed
16:08 everything there and he's a class act, this young lad
16:10 you can see why they call him Classy Charlie
16:12 can't you, looks the part, acts the part
16:14 he's very very slick in there
16:16 he's good on the eye
16:18 and he did everything he needed to do
16:20 on his professional debut tonight
16:22 over four hours, talks very well
16:24 didn't he, Walther Gox to
16:26 Southport
16:28 body to head
16:30 overall it was a very very good display
16:32 and sometimes when you're
16:34 boxers like Pollard with a very tight guard
16:36 hard to get through, but he did well
16:38 there Hickford, one man we're going to see
16:40 tonight is Liam Williams
16:42 who should have been fighting Hamza Shiraz
16:44 next weekend, but he's out with a
16:46 perforated eardrum, so Liam Williams
16:48 on the card tonight, over eight rounds
16:50 against Florin Cardos
16:52 and he's arrived here on a chilly
16:54 East London night at York Hall
16:56 ready for work
16:58 OK, let's get the
17:00 decision then, and I presume it's going to be
17:02 confirmation of a victory for Charlie
17:04 Hickford on debut, here's Dev Sarnie
17:06 to tell us
17:08 Ladies and
17:10 gentlemen, after four rounds
17:12 of boxing, your referee
17:14 Kieran McCann scores the contest
17:16 40-35
17:18 to your winner
17:20 and successful on
17:22 his professional debut
17:24 Classy
17:26 Charlie
17:28 Hickford
17:30 So confirmation
17:36 of the first professional victory
17:38 for the 21 year old from Kent
17:40 Charlie Hickford, and I've got to say
17:42 Radzi, he didn't put a punch wrong
17:44 did he? Absolutely right, just like
17:46 you said, dominated every second of every single
17:48 one of those four rounds, Charlie
17:50 Hickford, a dominant debut, he
17:52 looks the part, he is classy
17:54 covered in glitter, metaphorically
17:56 and literally
17:58 it was superb, Carl, it has to be said
18:00 from your end, you know what it's like to make a debut
18:02 how was that for you? Yeah, I think it was a really good
18:04 debut, he looked the part, he was
18:06 stayed close, he never really
18:08 was out of distance, but he relied on his
18:10 reflexes a lot, he never really got hit
