Discussing Sheffield Wednesday's heavy defeat to Southampton
Transcript
00:00 Joe Crown and Alex Miller here, your Sheffield Wednesday writing team at the start.
00:05 On the South Coast, very cold and fairly miserable after a 4-0 defeat.
00:12 A team of 11 better footballers beat a team of 11 footballers that weren't quite as good as them.
00:19 Yeah, I think the argument from some people would be, well Wednesday held their own against Leicester,
00:24 they got a draw against Leeds, but this Southampton team today, it didn't matter.
00:31 I think there were questions that were going to be asked about selection,
00:34 people asking about Bamrah Diaby, asking about Sean Bernard in midfield,
00:38 but it did feel today like with Southampton playing like that, it didn't really matter what team Wednesday put out
00:45 or how they set up, they were going to score at some point.
00:48 This is a very expensively put together team, I think over £100m it cost them to put together.
00:54 Like you say, they were just better in every facet today.
01:00 4-0, you sort of mentioned it in your match report, it's a dust yourself down and move on job, isn't it?
01:07 Yeah, I mean at the same time, we should say that Wednesday were poor.
01:12 They didn't quite carry the momentum of previous games, obviously Southampton's quality stopped them doing so,
01:21 but mistakes in the goals that they did concede gave themselves a mountain to climb.
01:27 Southampton committed a lot of players forward at times, and there were moments that they could have broken effectively,
01:33 and a missed pass here, or certainly misdirected passes, slow to go for it.
01:40 Needs mentioning as well, Wednesday were poor too.
01:44 Yeah, they were, and I think there was also, they created chances that they probably should have done better with.
01:50 Bailey Kadamatari in the first 20 seconds, 30 seconds, possibly could have done better with that one.
01:56 There was a nicely flushed shot that was well saved, there was a Josh Winders three-keep that was very well saved by a very expensive goalkeeper.
02:03 But yeah, Wednesday were just, they lacked that cutting edge that they've had in recent weeks.
02:09 But I think it is also worth mentioning, as poor as they were, they didn't commit to shut up shot.
02:15 They tried to have a go, and probably to their detriment in parts.
02:19 But as Danny Reuel just mentioned in his press conference, you can't make mistakes like Wednesday made today,
02:23 and expect not to get punished against a team this good.
02:26 Indeed, right, we'll leave it there. There's not a great deal that we want to talk about in any great length today.
02:31 Wednesday we'll go into back-to-back home matches against Coventry City.
02:36 Looking forward to trying spinning that into something exciting as we get deeper into that.
02:39 So good job Coventry didn't sign!
02:42 But yeah, keep it locked as always at thestart.co.uk.
02:46 We'll give you analysis as much as you can possibly have on today's match.
02:52 And of course, every step in the transfer window will be scoured out by ourselves.
02:57 And yeah, it's proving to be a busy month.
