00:00 Obviously you've seen that Gypsy Rose is out. Have you had a chance to speak to her at all?
00:04 What do you perceive of her new fame? Are you happy for her?
00:07 I'm so happy that she's released. I'm so happy for her. She deserves freedom.
00:12 Joey King sending her well wishes to Gypsy Rose Blanchard following her prison release.
00:17 There's a lot of different opinions out there. A lot of people are like, oh, I don't sympathize with her at all.
00:24 She murdered somebody and that's wrong.
00:26 And then there's other people who are out there who are like, wow, this girl went through so much.
00:31 Nearly five years after Joey starred as Gypsy in the Hulu miniseries The Act.
00:35 I wonder what it would look like if it grew in.
00:39 Probably a rat's nest like mine.
00:42 The actress was approached by Paps who asked her how she felt about Gypsy's newfound freedom
00:46 after serving eight years in prison for the second-degree murder of her mom, Dee Dee.
00:51 I'm so happy that she's released. I'm so happy for her. She deserves freedom.
00:55 The 2019 miniseries told the story of Gypsy's abuse at the hands of her mother,
01:00 who had Munchhausen syndrome by proxy, and Gypsy's plot to have then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn kill Dee Dee.
01:06 Don't be scared, hon. We never give up on each other. Like Bonnie and Clyde.
01:13 What happened to Bonnie and Clyde in the end?
01:15 To be able to portray a story like this, it's really a once-in-a-lifetime type of opportunity.
01:20 And it means the world going into something like this with all that support behind you.
01:24 It's been such a really just great experience.
01:29 Joey, who completely transformed for the role, spoke with E.T. on set and explained why the
01:34 public's perception of Gypsy might change after watching the series.
01:38 I really think both parties are going to come out of this show with a new perspective of Gypsy,
01:44 especially the people who think that she, you know, deserves to just sit in prison.
01:50 I mean, when you see what this girl went through.
01:54 Years later, Gypsy thinks shows like the act have the opposite effect.
01:58 I feel like the biggest misconception about me is that they think that I'm still that little girl
02:04 that got arrested. All they see is those images of me living with my mom.
02:09 Now Gypsy tells E.T. she hopes to change people's views of her from what they've seen on TV.
02:15 I think they don't realize that there has been a time gap from, you know,
02:20 it's an eight and a half year time gap from when I got arrested to now.
02:24 And I've grown up, I'm matured, I'm a woman, I'm married. Like a lot has changed.
02:31 Whereas I think when they watch the previous documentaries and even the act,
02:35 I think their image of me in their mind is still stuck in that time space.
02:41 And they don't allow for any growth. And so I think now that I'm coming out
02:46 as a woman and sharing my story now, I hope they'll see me in a more grown up light.
02:54 As far as Gypsy watching Joey's portrayal of her goes.
02:57 I have not watched the act. No.
02:59 Do you plan on it?
03:00 I don't plan on watching it. I lived it. For me, looking for
03:06 things that weren't correct or that were inaccurate, that's neither here nor there for me.
